I had an interesting day yesterday.

I went to the local bar...kind of a yuppie rich hippie bar. You know those types. ANyway, there was nobody in there aside from me and one other dude. That happens at 11am. Anyway, the dude was deaf. So we had an hour long conversation by text in a quiet bar. I thought it was pretty cool. The thoughts and words had to be more careful and not just winging it. Keith is his name. So I was thinking I should learn sign language. So I just looked us sign language stuff. It's way more complex than I thought. They even have sign language for scuba diving. If I see him again I will continue to text back and forth in the bar. Anyway, random stuff that nobody cares about, but I will post it anyway.

Can you imagine being born deaf ? Everything you have heard

in your lifetime never happened if you were ? Wow.

My kid’s first cries ….. music ……. cicadas on a gentle spring night ….. the ocean.

Wow.

At the church service last night, the senior pastor’s daughter, born blind, was a part of the performance. She’s 11’ish - blind or not, she was incredible. Amazing voice. Sang and was a part of the play.

So this post makes me think:

1. I am so blessed. The things I have seen & heard has been enough for 3 lifetimes. Thank you Lord.

2. If you HAD to pick - born deaf or blind ?

Merry Christmas Clemson Family ! ! Thanks for letting me hang with you loosers. Pretty fun.

Brad Brownell: Only Larry freaking Shyatt has a WORSE overall winning percentage among Clemson basketball coaches since 1975. Let that sink in. It's Larry Shyatt & then Brad Brownell.

Some short time after my father died (I was 19) a man at my church offered me a job. He's followed work to another small east Tennessee town about 35 or 40 miles away and I stayed with his family and worked during the week and returned home to family and friends each weekend.

As time went on the trip to work became more laborious and dreaded due to the Greyhound busline being my transportation. From Rockwood the bus carried me to Knoxville where I changed buses to one that went down highway 411 to Chattanooga. The highway was a two lane with stops at stations at every hole in the wall town making the trip several hours long rather than the one hour as the crow flies. Englewood was my destination. I lamented the extent of the journey each week and my prayers often included an appeal to God for a solution. One was forthcoming.

I got on the bus in Knoxville and sat next to another young man about my age. Being me, I spoke to him and he conveyed that he was deaf. This was about 1970 so one raised as I did not know of the complicated system of signs which are now common. I knew only one hand signs by which each letter is formed. If you watch sign language much you will notice the signer will cease using two hands and flip the fingers of the active hand several times thereby spelling a single word one letter at a time rather than using both hands to convey a thought or phrase.

I had mixed feelings about that experience. While feeling blessed to be able to tell that man about Jesus and how he was loved to death I also was humbled to realize that there are many who are less off than me and shamed from crying over a couple hours on a bus each week.

So they spell each word by one hand? They don't just have the word is a symbol? It must be hard, because people treat them like they are mentally handicapped, but they just can't hear. I made sure to act like I I didn't care about anything and I was probably to free. You have to though so you don't feel like you are being overly nice just because they can't hear. On the other hand, you engage and get in the mix because it's fun.

Yes, the symbols formed by one hand somewhat resemble the letters they represent.

Imo, everyone should at least be able to sign like this so as to be able to communicate with the deaf. Looking back I can't imagine what motivation I had to learn this chart.
