media will cry about it

Oct 5, 2022, 7:13 PM

but at the end of the day this happened last year and was already addressed.

Re: media will cry about it ... no, this is only starting

Oct 6, 2022, 12:57 PM

Already addressed ????

This tragic matter is just getting started.

I sure hope that laws get much stricter.

Accidents caused by street racing should be criminalized ... just like DWI.

Penalties for harm caused by street racing should be seizing of the vehicles and some limited jail time.

Real consequences need to be levied for the horrible practice of street racing to become less prevalent.

Honestly, Dabo said all that there is to say. Nobody was under the illusion that this would magically "go away". They knew it would eventually come to this. Davis will have to face the music and whatever happens, happens. I pray for all involved, honestly. You can't get "resolution" to something like this in a courtroom. It never happens because only the lawyers get that in the form of a check. I hope Davis and Ms. Alvarez find healing and closure.

Screw Calford.

I called it. With NIL money flowing, these kids aren’t going to be driving 120 HP Hondas. I bet the average college football player is mounting up in something with 400 HP or more.

What would you do if you and a friend both had fast cars? Duh, you race. That’s how you determine the alpha. It’s needed to create a hierarchy in the locker room.

Kids racing happens all the time. What doesn’t happen

Oct 5, 2022, 8:43 PM

all the time is a high-speed collision with a parked vehicle involving serious injury to the person in that vehicle.

Speeding and racing are serious violations and in no way to be condoned. But, they are traffic violations. Usually involving fines and loss of driving privileges.

What changes the situation from a traffic violation to something much more serious is the ... collision.

Once Fred Davis collided with the woman, the issue and the potential consequences increased dramatically.

Re: Kids racing happens all the time. What doesn’t happen

Oct 6, 2022, 9:35 AM

You missed my point. Most kids racing are doing so with slow cars because kids are poor. NIL money is what makes this dangerous because the kids are going to be driving Charger SRT® Hellcat Redeye Widebody’s.

Unintended consequences are always the worst. The NCAA is really the one to blame here.

Re: Kids racing happens all the time. What doesn’t happen

Oct 6, 2022, 10:27 AM

Even a so-called slow car can still go over 100mph. Doesn't really matter what type of car, 75-80 in 55 zone is just as reckless and careless.

Re: Kids racing happens all the time. What doesn’t happen

Oct 6, 2022, 10:33 AM

Just my opinion, but I think anyone athletic enough to play football at Clemson has the reflexes and coordination to drive 75-80 in a 55. Maybe we should require anyone spending NIL money on fast cars to take a course at the BMW Performance Center in Greer.

If we’re being honest, the NCAA should foot the bill.

You opinion is incorrect.

So just do away with personal responsibility?

The NCAA is to blame for kids who street race?

That is a categorical "wrong."

Re: Kids racing happens all the time. What doesn’t happen

Oct 6, 2022, 2:29 PM

The NCAA isn’t responsible for all kids who street race, just the ones that are racing only because they bought suped up cars with their NIL money.

It’s no different than cigarette companies being responsible for lung cancer.

I guess this differs from the Henry Ruggs accident because

Oct 6, 2022, 9:20 AM

Ruggs was intoxicated. (I know the victim died in the Ruggs case - but this lady had her body severely and permanently damaged.)

I'm surprised there wasn't jail time involved...

Re: I guess this differs from the Henry Ruggs accident because

Oct 6, 2022, 9:30 AM

You are correct on Ruggs but Davis didn't get jail time because
he wasn't intoxicated. If you were on the highway going over
the speed limit and talking on your cell phone and suddenly
caused injuries in a wreck..you wouldn't go too jail either.

Laws need to be changed so that speed racing (the definition of which needs to be set first) is classified as statutory criminal act (not just a civil act).

Harm caused as a result of street racing gets an amplified sentence vs. harm caused by a sober driver who was not speeding.

Harm caused by a street racer results in losing the vehicle and some limited jail time.

Harm caused by a street racer who is also intoxicated results a higher penalty (extensive jail time to go along with losing the vehicle).

Actions and consequences. Make the consequences clear and the frequency of bad actions will decrease.

There hasn't been jail time because Davis requested a jury trial and was granted his request.

The heavy load on the court system has prevented his case from being called to trial at this point.

He is not completely out of the woods in terms of the possibility of jail time or further criminal punishment.

A person is guilty of the offense of felony reckless driving if he causes great bodily injury to a person other than himself while driving a motor vehicle in reckless disregard of the safety of others. A person who is convicted of, pleads guilty to, or pleads nolo contendere to felony reckless driving must be fined not less than one thousand dollars and not more than ten thousand dollars, imprisoned not more than ten years, or both. The Department of Motor Vehicles shall revoke for three years the driver's license of a person convicted of felony reckless driving.

In this case if he is tried and convicted he would go to jail.He wasn't
arrested at the scene because he wasn't intoxicated. I'm sure the officer
could have took him to jail but he could quickly bond out.

But he was only charged with a misdemeanor. Makes no sense to me.

In some cases a person charged with a misdemeanor could get
some jail time.

If there Is jail time invoved it would have happened last year. I don't think you can go to jail In a civil suit.
