TNET: Elliott and Spiller looking for accountability, maturity from Lyn-J Dixon

Elliott and Spiller looking for accountability, maturity from Lyn-J Dixon

Social media was on fire during both of Clemson’s first two games of the season, with many wondering why Lyn-J Dixon either wasn’t on the field or receiving more carries. Without getting into specifics, both head coach Dabo Swinney and offensive coordinator Tony Elliott have answered those questions, and the consensus seems to be that Dixon simply needs to act more like the senior he is. Love both Spiller an LJD. I am anxiously waiting for LJD to lead that group. Tremendous talent. The rest of the country needs to see this man shine.

Lyn J needs to get on board with CJ. He is always solid running the ball.
I would like to see Lyn J get the ball 10 or 15 times per game, and move the chains.
The other running backs need to get another 15-20 carries per game.
We cannot have an offense that just relies on DJ arm. He's just not that consistent, yet.

I hope they get it worked out, and Lyn J has a great game Saturday.

If this is the extent of the “problem” then the solution seems all too simple…..LJD needs to get over himself and adjust to the obvious change in the “Chain of Command “…. CJ is the lead dog in the RB room….the apparent adjustment issue is on LJD, this is silly IMO…..how many of us have had to adjust to a new boss? This is part of life and (frankly) LJD is too OLD to be having this problem…. Sounds like TE may have pampered him. SHEEESSSEEE! Dabo summarized the whole thing….GROW UP!

Reading between the lines

Sep 13, 2021, 5:21 PM

LJ may be taking his frustration and talk to the wrong chief. A bit of, “That's not how we did it…”Doesn’t like Spiller’s call so he dimes him out to TE or DS maybe in blew up in his face.

It’s the right way to deal with this by not giving LJ an audience past, “well, what did CJ tell you?”

I'm already sick of reading about this. I can only imagine what's going on in Lyn-J`s head and would encourage him to swallow his pride for the benefit of the team and ultimately for himself. That being said, I blame Dabo 100% for media s#!t show that has ensued. "Love shack" theme aside, pointing a finger at Lyn-J for being at odds with C.J. is very unbecoming of a head coach and only opened the door for wild speculation and further division. I firmly believe that Dixon is the best RB on the team at this moment (even though he may not have the highest ceiling) and if he ends up transferring, Dabo`s handling of this will be to blame.

I am of the belief (or generation) that you don't air your dirty laundry. This is quite out of character for Dabo, but I think it was a measured and calculated response. I can only hope it was intended to motive LJD, but I would argue it does more to damage to publicly humiliate a 'kid'.

I think Dabo could have gotten his message across to the media while preserving and uplifting LJD if that's what he wanted to do. The whole media response from Dabo and Elliott is mind boggling.

Theres a saying. Control is an illusion. The only thing you have control of is your own attitude. Dixon needs to control his attitude and he will lead the field. None of this is on Dabos head. If Dixon leaves, its his decision and on his head, and his alone

MATURITY!!! REALLY!!! Lyn-J what 22/23 years old. Perhaps he’s tired of being talk to like he’s a teenager. Now, granted Elliott and Lyn-J had an understanding, perhaps instead of Lyn-J getting use to CJ, why don’t CJ get use to what Lyn-J can do, what designed run plays work well for Lyn-J vs what works for CJ. Look player/Coach disagreements is healthy so long as it’s a productive disagreement. In other words, as long as communication between the two is there, talking about their differences in opinion, I honestly don’t see the problem with Maturity here, you show maturity when you’re not scared to stand your ground, speak up for yourself and what you know you can do, as well as what you can do to help your new Coach adjust to your abilities, not vice versa. CJ needs to take a more objective approach to Coaching Lyn-J, in other words stop trying to live your career through Lyn-J and let Lyn-J be Lyn-J. An that’s advise from a Military guy who has an awesome track record with his troops!

Lol. That attitude is exactly why this country has turned into a bunch of spoiled, whiny babies.

Why doesn’t CJ cater to Lyn J? Because he’s the dang coach and that’s not his role or his job. Lyn J is the player and CJ is the coach, meaning CJ tells Lyn J what to do and Lyn J does it without question. Lyn J can either accept that or leave. It’s that simple.

Good grief what an insane upside down view of reality.

Sep 15, 2021, 6:29 AM [ in reply to Re: TNET: Elliott and Spiller looking for accountability, maturity from Lyn-J Dixon ]

If Coach Spiller bows to him and other young RB’s see it, what does that teach? Clemson is bigger than LJD (I really like him and have high hopes) and the program must have discipline. If you can’t see that then you’re part of what’s wrong with this world

2024 white level memberbadge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

LJD is 3 years deep in Elliott’s RB room…

Sep 13, 2021, 6:50 PM

and in comes CJ changing the culture of that room. It’s tough, especially since CJ is a new coach with no experience and Lyn-J probably is as knowledgeable as he is when it comes to the playbook. That will cause the two to butt heads at times.

The “chain of command” comment is obvious. CJ made a change in the RB room that Lyn-J thought was wrong, so Lyn-J went and told Dabo or Tony about it which got him in CJ’s doghouse.

They both just need to sit down and talk it out like Elliott said (who knows, maybe they already have). All of this should have remained in-house, and should have never left the locker room.

Re: TNET: Elliott and Spiller looking for accountability, maturity from Lyn-J Dixon

Sep 13, 2021, 7:47 PM

What a mess. We have a talented running back who can help the team and his coaches can't find a positive way to have communications with him! Who's lacking the maturity here? It seems to me that it's the coach's responsibility to be mature and find a way to work through whatever is going on. And certainly not talk about it in public. Dabo doesn't make many mistakes that I know of, and I know that dealing with a room full of 18-22 year olds must be a daily challenge, but that's what he and his staff are paid (very well) to do. I agree with the earlier post that said "I'm tired of reading about this." For gosh sakes, LJD has been and can continue to be an asset to this team. Look at the tapes from last year. When ETN was being bottled up and keyed on, he found ways to pick up valuable yards. He's a talented young man that we can use on a team that is looking for a run game. The best coach is the one that figures out how to bring out the best in a person, and that doesn't mean having that person conform to a standard set of expectations. Everyone in CJ's room is different. If he can't see that and work with them where they are, not where he is, there will continue to be problems like this one. Go Tigers.

While I get change is rough but it’s a part of life. Heck you tell me you go from a coach who played college ball to some who was drafted in the first round of the NFL draft and spent 9 years in the NFL as a running back! I’m gonna pick his brain every chance I get and do everything he says to help make me a better player. Time for everyone to get on the same page and work towards the same goal….WINNING!

on TE's comments.

It's funny because I just interviewed a potential candidate for a leadership role in my org yesterday and one of the questions I always ask potential leaders is "Do you believe in adapting to your employees or having them adapt to you?". It helps me get a feel for the candidates leadership style, and to me the correct answer is somewhere in the middle. To be an effective leader there's give and take between you and your team. You obviously can't be a push over, but you have to learn personalities and what makes people tick to be able to get the most out of them. Sounds like Spiller may have the "my way or the highway" style and that's the candidates I stay away from.

Re: Sounds like an Ego and "Dominance" issue with Spiller based

Sep 15, 2021, 12:30 AM

I agree that most of the time it is best for both parties to exhibit a little give and take, but maybe it has to do with Elliot or Spiller being more detailed in expectations. Maybe Dixon resents being micromanaged or at the other end, needs to be given more direction. Some people fair better with more responsibility and others with less. It's easy for both parties to get frustrated when the leadership style does not match up with what the one being led works better with.

I think that odds are good that the situation has gotten blown out of proportion and will work itself out soon. It is an opportunity for both Spiller and Dixon to grow. Maybe in the end Coach Spiller will be better at adjusting his coaching style to fit the player and Lyn-J will be more coachable because he can adjust to the coaching style.

We are starved for football and speculate over any little thing this time of year. Maybe this is a big deal but I doubt it. I think that we are making this into a story because we don't have enough real Clemson football news to take care of our appetite right now.
