Can anyone think of a high major coach

Feb 8, 2017, 7:40 AM

who they'd consider a realistic option? If you consider the Big East high major, maybe Ed Cooley at Providence. I honestly can't think of another.

There are some high major retreads out there: Sendek, Greenberg, Mike Davis, Tommy Amaker, Steve Robinson types. I don't see that happening.

If what seems like the inevitable move is made, it's most likely to be a mid major guy viewed as a riser. Another name I'd throw out there with those already listed is Keith Dambrot of Akron. He was Lebron's high school coach and has built a mini powerhouse at his hometown school. Having the "King" tied to the program in some way couldn't hurt

Three names: Archie Miller of Dayton, Will Wade of VCU, and perhaps Coach Muller of Ill. State. Otherwise I have no idea who to consider.

Miller and Wade would definitely get a call

Dan Hurley at RI, Keith Dambrot at Akron, Matt McCall at UTC, Kevin Keatts of UNCW, Ron Hunter at Georgia St, Scott Cherry of High Point, Jeff Jones at ODU, and Pat Kelsey at Winthrop would be some other names who might get some interest

H ell cliff Ellis would be better than what we have.
I bet he would not leave Coastal even if we asked him to come.

The problem with mid majors...

Feb 8, 2017, 8:23 AM

of course is recruiting

it will be brad all over again

never able to get the big time recruits to come

TRY the big name coach who has won something or played somewhere that appeals to a prospect

I'd favor a Amaker, Hurley, Hubert Davis, Steve Robinson, Larry Brown even Cremins

Archie Miller though I think can recruit and may be a fit

Will Wade is already a good recruiter. Getting plenty of 4 stars at VCU. Just got a top 100 2018 recruit from Indiana. Hoosiers wanted him bad.

Plenty of guys make the transition

Feb 8, 2017, 9:21 AM [ in reply to The problem with mid majors... ]

especially those with experience as an assistant at a high major. Think Billy Donavan, Coach K, Valvano, Cremins, or today Drew, Larranaga, Miller, Alford, or Brey.

I guess it depends on what you consider a high level coach.

Feb 8, 2017, 8:51 AM

I don't consider these coaches high level, but they are coaches that I think are realistic hires:
Will Wade
Archie Miller
Gregg Marshal

Will Wade would be great or Archie Miller would be great.

Hell no on that piece of trash Gregg Marshall, he is as crooked as the day is long he learned from one of the best when he was an assistant at the College of Charleston, John Kresse. Want to be on probation hire that Gamecock want a be.

Marshall wouldn't even pick up the phone

Feb 8, 2017, 9:13 AM [ in reply to I guess it depends on what you consider a high level coach. ]

he has it made at Wichita St. Makes high major money with an easy path to success

It's the same problem we had when we hired CBB. The coaches we want will not come to CU. VCU and Providence are better basketball jobs than Clemson. They pay more and it is a heck of a lot easier to recruit.

New facilities put us in a much better situation

Feb 8, 2017, 10:30 AM

competively than when Brad was hired. The job will interest some, not all. Key is finding the right fit. Best example from our past is Barnes. He fit the culture here, even if it ended badly for us. It's why many are high on Wade. Yes, VCU is a marquis mid major job. But for him, possibly, being the guy that transforms your alma mater could have appeal. He designed his contract with a low buyout, so he's not averse to moving on.
