God bless the coal miners that keep our lights on

Oct 24, 2022, 6:41 PM

at a reasonable price.

This photo came from the UK Blue-White game in Pikeville, Kentucky this past weekend.

Coach John Calipari shared the picture on his Facebook page with this caption.

"My family’s American dream started in a Clarksburg, WV coal mine, so this picture hits home.

From what I’ve been told, after his shift, he raced to be with his son & watch our team. Don’t know who this is, but I have tickets for him & his family at Rupp to be treated as VIPs!!"

I'm curious why so many people gave this ignorance a TU

Oct 25, 2022, 8:25 AM [ in reply to Re: God bless the coal miners that keep our lights on ]

Anyone care to explain?

Coal only generates about 20% of electric power in the US, and electric cars can be charged by any source of electricity. If you have solar panels on your roof, it's entirely possible to charge your car with 100% solar power. Same goes for people whose electricity comes from natural gas, nuclear, hydro, wind, geothermal or whatever.

Another point to consider is that even if your electricity does come from a coal plant, that plant is much more efficient at both generating power and filtering particulates and other pollutants from its exhaust than your gasoline-powered vehicle is.

This kind of false rhetoric is very dangerous. Coal is only 20% of energy generation in United States. Electric cars are mostly powered by other sources. Also EVs are not a liberal agenda. There are plenty of conservatives who EVs and hybrids to save on fuel costs and noise pollution. Even my Trump loving, fire and brimstone cousin drives a hybrid to work because he has a 60 mile round-trip commute. He doesn’t give a crap about the environment. I personally don’t care at all what you think, but spreading these kinds of lies is dangerous and detrimental to society. Pollution from gasoline and diesel car exhaust is damaging to the environment, damaging to human health, and and contributes greatly to noise pollution, smog and water contamination

Do you think that generating electricity for your electric car is good for the environment?
Coal, Nuclear, Natural Gas, Hydro, Wind, Solar? None of these are good for the environment. Which do you prefer? Personally I prefer Nuclear and Natural Gas, but a combination of all of these is actually needed.

If you live in SC, it's more likely to be nuclear power

Oct 24, 2022, 8:07 PM

that's keeping your lights on.

Here in the Lowcountry most of it's hydroelectric power.

From where? Your power in the low country comes from Santee Cooper primarily and they have very, very little hydro power. If you are a Duke or SCE&G customer it may be a bit more but not much.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Yes, I've been calling them nuclear powered cars for years.

Oct 25, 2022, 12:18 PM [ in reply to If you live in SC, it's more likely to be nuclear power ]

Electric cars are mostly recharged at night. No solar at night, duh, and wind power output is low at night. Gas and hydro are typically peak sources. Coal depends on where you are in the county.

I love it when someone talks about their electric car and I say, "you mean your nuclear powered car?".

Oct 25, 2022, 12:22 PM

Right, that's why you also need a battery to store the energy generated by your solar panels so you can use it whenever's most convenient. I'm all in favor of more nuclear power, though.

Re: Yes, I've been calling them nuclear powered cars for years.

Oct 25, 2022, 12:44 PM

Either that, or sell the electricity that your panels generate back to the power company and use theirs when you need it. Saves money on your power bill and you're still doing your part.

In my first job out of college I had to take inventory of a medical equipment company in eastern Kentucky, including Pikesville and Paintsville, KY and Grundy, VA. The equipment was mostly for coal miners with black lung. I had to go to their homes ... saw some homes with dirt floors. It was eye opening experience for this guy fresh out of college. The horses in Lexington lived better than some of these folks in eastern Kentucky. God bless them all.

I grew up in E. TN and know country people I've met...

Oct 25, 2022, 3:48 AM

from Florida to NY upstate are all salt of the earth. What's outstanding about the western Kentucky people is that they are happy with their simplicity of lifestyle and their mountain moonshine is right there with anything coming out of E NC, N GA or NE SC.

My granny dosed me with many a potion of honey and a dab of Kentucky Liquor. It took 7-9 days to cure a cold but it helped a feller git by till the cold was gone. I usually faked a cough for two weeks though.

You mean west NC and NW SC right? No shine out of E NC and probably not much out of NE SC either
