Kendrick

Aug 10, 2021, 10:45 AM

Does he start against us ?

Will we have something for him (route/package/approach) from our WR's - we know what his tendencies are ?

Will it matter ?

It won't matter...

AT ALL !!!!

According to their fall camp depth chart, yes he will be starting against us. Will probably be covering EJ or Joe depending on where Ross is lined up...

We probably change nothing as far as an attack stand point. The staff knows DK's weaknesses and I assume we will attack him often...

Re: Kendrick

I'm absolutely sure they do.

Kendrick's a really, really talented player with a high, high ceiling...and a LOW floor, and the big thing about him...he can be wound up and gotten to, which I think the Clemson staff is very, very aware of. When he starts melting down he becomes a hothead, loses his mind and his composure...and can become a distinct liability and maybe the most un-clutch guy on the field.

My guess would be they're going to throw some route concepts and stuff at him he hasn't seen before and try to melt his brain early, talk at him some, and see if they can get him to melt down. It's certainly what I would do, anyhow. And the next thing you know he's going to be grabbing, zigging when he should zag, and jumping on guy's backs, and losing his mind. Once he loses his composure, you usually don't see him get it back.

Just my .02 worth.

It will be interesting to see if our guys jaw at him much.

Aug 10, 2021, 11:00 AM

I agree with your assessment. I'm curious, however, at how much our guys will mess with him. Obviously we want to win and if that is an opportunity, maybe they go after it, but he's also a former teammate who clearly has some stuff going on. I wonder if that factors into our players' approaches. He was in the dog house more than almost anyone on the team so I'm not sure how the guys feel about him?

Even if we keep our mouth shut, if he stumbles a couple times in coverage (figuratively...or heck...literally), I can see it getting into his head. Tough to leave as the starter of a championship program and face off against them in the first game and NOT perform well, even if one is mentally strong.

He's one of their more experienced CBs, but it won't matter:

It won't matter if our offensive line gels and plays well. Establish an adequate run game and everything will come together imo.

Re: Kendrick

Aug 10, 2021, 11:00 AM

It seems very likely that Kendrick will be one of the starters at CB for UGA. There's a three man battle for the other spot.

It will be interesting to see how Clemson attacks him. One can be almost certain that they'll try to run at him considering he doesn't really excel in the physical parts of the game.

As far as coverage, that's a little more complex question. UGA runs a ton of man coverage instead of cover-3 that Clemson likes to utilize, so will his eyes in coverage be quite as much of a weakness? Time will tell.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I would think (though I'm not expert) that if Clemson's

Aug 10, 2021, 11:08 AM

familiarity of him is of any value, it would be in coverage tendencies or in his mental game. If he is prone to avoid contact, any team with a film room knows that. Would a running game be influenced by the relative physicality of a cornerback?

Aug 10, 2021, 11:12 AM

Oh yeah.

You always run preferentially to the side of a guy that doesn't like the mucking. Especially if he stinks at getting off blocks and Kendrick does. He's REALLY not going to like our huge WR's this year.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I get that, but he's a CB.

Aug 10, 2021, 11:19 AM

Wouldn't that come waaaaay down the list? I mean...where will we be able to create some space on the line...where are the linebackers the softest...then MAYBE a corner (if he would even be in position)? Even then, I'd think we would worry more about avoiding speed than the CB avoiding contact...because you (should) have some room. Or if you don't have room then the CB is probably just part of the tackling.

Regardless, just another component of this game that will be interesting to watch.

Aug 10, 2021, 11:25 AM

Well, maybe.

Sorry to say, they're probably going to dominate us up front.

Don't like it, but they're probably going to. I don't like our OL-versus-their-DL matchup. Sorry, I just don't, especially in Week 1.

What could change that is if we can catch some matchups early, beat them over the top a couple of times - and get them to pull some hats out of the box because they're having to back up, but otherwise we're not going to run on Georgia, IMHO, and certainly not between the tackles.

Maybe the fellas will totally prove me wrong. I'd love to be proven wrong. But they're way ahead in that matchup. But if our interior OL can move Georgia's DL around I'll tip my hat to them because they certainly were not there at the end of last season.

Their big matchup problem is their secondary versus our receivers...especially Justyn Ross. They really aren't going to like that matchup - at all! - and that's what might compel them to pull helmets out of the box and might actually allow us to get some joy in the run game.

All of that will be assessed too, but an OC worth his salt attacks all the vulnerable spots. With the front 7 that UGA has returning there isn't going to be much success running in the box. In this game, you'll see tosses and short passes/screens designed to get out wide, specifically the edge that has Kendrick.

Re: I get that, but he's a CB.

Aug 10, 2021, 11:37 AM

Yup. Was thinking exactly the same thing.

Honestly I was wondering if they might try to hide Kendrick at the nickel, he's that bad at run defending...and we are probably lining up Ross in the slot.

Re: I get that, but he's a CB.

Aug 10, 2021, 11:57 AM

The way it looks now, WVU transfer Tykee Smith looks to be in the nickel spot. PFF is super high on him and it looks to be a fun to watch matchup with him and Ross:

PFF:
"Smith, a three-star recruit of the 2019 class, has recorded the third-best slot coverage grade in the FBS over his true freshman and sophomore seasons while serving as the “spear” in West Virginia’s defense.

Smith’s 2020 campaign was a sight to behold. He was targeted 38 times in coverage across 10 games and allowed just 110 yards for the season. He did not give up a single explosive pass play of 15 or more yards while making five plays on the ball and forcing 10 passing stops."

My guess is more that UGA rely on the sideline-to-sideline speed of the LBs and the ability of both safeties to run the alley to make up for Kendrick's lack of physicality.

Re: I get that, but he's a CB.

Aug 10, 2021, 11:55 AM [ in reply to Re: I get that, but he's a CB. ]

I agree totally. Their DL is not particularly aggressive because they take shallow slants to plug gaps and stop the run ..... and create gaps for their linebackers to rush the QB. That is why none of their DL bever have very many sacks or even tackles for loss. Our DL, I think, is much more aggressive and why we are always toward the top in tackles for loss. So the really important part for us is that our RB's protect the gaps that their LBs are going to take to get to DJ. IF we do that we should hit a lot of big plays. Hopefully the screens will slow their LBs down.

Re: I get that, but he's a CB.

Aug 10, 2021, 12:06 PM

You're spot on about the different style of play between UGA and Clemson's DL. More specifically, Clemson is a 1 gap front where UGA is a two gap front. 1 gap fronts usually are smaller and quicker in contrast to their two gap counterparts. Because their gap responsibility is limited to just a single gap, they are able to be more aggressive and tend to rack up more sacks and TFLs. 2 gap teams by contrast are usually asked to control the LOS and make sure to play either gap by using size and strength to control the OL. The intention is to free up LBs to flow to the ball and make the play. 2 gap DL's contribution to the team usually doesn't show up in the box score.

Things like legal troubles or run-ins with the law always manage to get swept under the rug or dismissed before the start of the season.
