I dont mind us offering a few 3 stars

Jan 23, 2022, 11:51 AM

I've seen a lot of posters complain about Clemson offering some 3 star players and declaring this the end of our run. But, this might be one if the best ways Clemson has to combat the portal.

Instead of thinking of a 3 star player as a recruit who is not talented as five stars think of him as a player that has to develop for a couple of years.

For example the last 2 recruits that committed to Clemson this past week, watching their film you can tell they have talent, they just need to get bigger. Clemson certainly has the nutritionist, weight room, and staff to help them do that. Its just up to the players how much they are willing to commit to improve. Some will commit, some won't. But a 2-star talent with a 5-star work ethic will always beat a 5-star talent with a 2-star work ethic.

Now consider this, who is more likely to transfer, a highly touted freshman who is told to wait his turn behind a senior who has developed and been through the process. Or a kid who knows he needs to put in the work a few years and will then be given a chance to compete as a reward for his hard work. The answer is pretty obvious.

The point I'm trying to make is I'd rather have recruits that won't play much this year but have a chance to contribute in the next 2-3 years than bring in a player who also wont play this year and then transfer in 2-3 years.

Your analysis is spot on.

I would agree that a 3* would put in a lot more effort and stay compared to a pampered 5* who quite doesn't make the team, and hits the portal.

I bet that the NFL is loaded with ex three star guys. They have shown that they are willing to put in the work to become the best.

There is no substitute for hard work

Along as it's a position we need. We don't really need a 5th string player that will never see the field or spending more scholarships on kickers. The punter we used one on is worth one though.

Apparently the coaching staff thought they were worth the scholarship! The coaching staff has a record that O can see! You???? Not so much!

I'm assuming that you're talking about the coaching staff prior to the end of this past season, a lot of those coaches are no longer recruiting players for Clemson, they are looking after their own A$$ where they are coaching at now, not being Clemson!!!!

Ah yes so thats why we have so few recruits and still 10 short. It's us being selective and not players turning us down.

Yall pumpers are embarassing.

Great post Tiki. The point that the rable rousers refuse to see is "Stars" don't grow on trees. Sure you want 5 Star kids but if they refuse, you go to 4 Star kids and it they refuse, you go to 3 Star ones. College coaches are paid mega bucks to coach and that includes recruiting and that includes the development of talent. Dabo has a proven track record so let him do his thing.

Its just sad to see and a head scratcher when highly touted freshmen in the nation that use the transfer portal or not....that we had or could of had.... are running through and around our fully developed 2 and 3 star players in games....that are so highly favored just because they're on our Clemson team or personally connected to one of our coaches.

You don't win championships by recruiting players that you don't think they'll enter the portal. You recruit players that you believe without a doubt you can win big time FB games with, and if some enter the portal, usually it's bc someone in front of them are better than them, and they have to go where they can get 1st string snaps. And usually, they end up making a huge mistake bc, the guys where they go and compete against for playing, they already know their system, and they play it better than the portal 4 star player that left their original team!!!

I've said this before, but I'll say it again, the portal is bad for college FB, but it's also just as bad for the guys that use it for more playing time bc, where they end up, the guys that are getting the 1st team snap, are getting them bc they are good at what they do, and they know their system better than the portal guy guy coming in to try and take their starting job, and it makes them better, and they keep their starting job. College kids are young and smart, but they never look for what's on the other end of what they want. And the portal usually ruins their FB career more than what they could have gained if they would have just stayed where they were, and worked harder for if an injury happened, or the guy in front of them left early, and they could have gotten good enough to hold off any new comers!!! The transfer portal, another one of the NCAA's major mistakes!!!!

The portal isn’t bad. Being immediately eligible to play is another matter. If you transfer and sit out a year I am ok with that.

Three stars are better than walk ons and that's what we were forced to play at times last season.

Your point is without merit- sorry.
"With offers from Appalachian State, Gardner-Webb, Presbyterian and Wofford, he declined the only football and baseball offers he had, which were of FCS affiliation, and walked on at Clemson.Apr 3, 2020- Can you Name this Player?
Hint- He plays with the Raiders Now.

Roster management will be more difficult moving forward and you’re right; developing depth will more than likely require a cross section of recruits, not just all 5 stars.

Isaiah Simmons was a 3 star and he developed into one of our best defensive players we’ve had.
