For the people lobbying for an 8 team playoff.
Nov 30, 2016, 12:23 PM

I see a lot of people complaining about Ohio St being at #2 and getting into the playoff without playing a championship game. You people do realize that if they expand the playoff to 8 teams. There will be MORE teams making it in without being conference champions. Going to 8 teams is just going to make it easier for a team to get in without playing in their conference championship.

chance to play for it all playing for it all. Go back 50 years and look. You could probably count on one hand how many times more than 4 teams deserved a shot at being the National Champion.
4 teams means something
8 teams does nothing but water down the product. You wanna see watered down product?? Go watch the NFL. My grandmother's bridge club could make their playoffs.

Or NCAA Basketball, or the NBA, or the NHL, or MLB (increasingly so). I agree with you. No more than the top four should get a shot.

I agree with you, while not perfect 8 would bring bigger issues and dilute the playoffs. These last 2 games are really part of the playoff. Win you cross rival game and win your conference championship.

If we went to 8 teams everybody in the top 25 would be mad if they were left out.

The ideal situation ...
Nov 30, 2016, 12:29 PM
|
|
1. Do away with creampuff games. 2. Add more conference games. 3. Determine conference champion from regular season record / eliminate champ game 4. 8 team playoff ... champ from Power 5 + 3 "wildcards" 5. Start playoffs immediately after season is over ... no long breaks.

But Ohio State wouldn't be making it in *at the expense* of a team which beat them and won their division and conference.
It wouldn't come down to some "eye test" to get in over a team that beat you and achieved something you couldn't.
8 teams makes too much sense to me.
With that said, I've said all along that once you lose ANY game then your situation becomes tenuous and you can be argued out of your spot. PSU, want to guarantee your spot? then beat PITT and MICH. Clemson, want to guarantee our spot? Then beat PITT. The only team which would have an ear piercing and valid complaint if they were left out this year is the one which has beaten every tema they've played.

fine like it is. Someone will always be close but not make it. Reward excellence. Not everybody gets a trophy

SO what...
Nov 30, 2016, 12:46 PM
|
|
...at least we could remove all the drama because sure as chit, the real NC would be somewhere in the top 8 whereas right now we gotta wonder if #5 is truly the team that could have won it all.

I posted yesterday about this

I believe that a 4 team playoff system works and an 8 team playoff is unnecessary. There are pros and cons to both sides, and you will never get a perfect system. I think the 4 team playoff is working well though.

The point is not to have a perfect system
Nov 30, 2016, 3:09 PM

The point is to ensure that any possible NC level teams get in and have a chance. 8 teams does this, for football, about like 32 for basketball (64 is too many)

it would have

if it just meant they would play again in the semifinals.
It's like when FSU edged Florida in 1996 and then Florida destroyed them in the sugar bowl rematch. The initial FSU win then meant nothing

And

Alabama won their rematch against LSU when it was a 2 team playoff. Let's just get rid of bowl games all together so there's no chance at rematches and every game actually means something.

I disagree

But only because I'd have a rule in place saying no more than 2 teams from any conference get in.
Thus last week would've been monumentally important

A rule like that wouldn't make sense. There are at least three big 10 teams that are better than the best big 12 team...

There are plenty of teams
Nov 30, 2016, 3:07 PM

worthy of playing for a NC, out of only 8 selections. This allows for power conference champions and basically 3 wild card others. Pretty good, I'd say.
You know, so many of us are on the inside looking out, and so we're making these "four only" arguments, but if we were 5 - 8 right now, I have a feeling the tune would change.

who DO win their championship games make the playoff. The fact that they don't know is the travesty.
