My thoughts on the Spring Game

Apr 4, 2021, 10:21 AM

It appeared that the game plan yesterday was very basic. Only a few plays were run by the offense. The play book was very small. On several occasions the Tigers ran the same pass play on three or four straight possessions. It is very difficult to evaluate the offense when the quarterbacks are not allowed to run. This is especially true with the Clemson offense because there are a number of plays designed to get the QB involved in the rushing game. That is,or was, one of the strengths of TP. I believe there is a lot more work to be done with the offensive line. Coach Swinney has said on numerous occasions that the summer workouts are where the team is built. The receivers yesterday were very impressive. Especially the tight ends. Not allowing the QBs to scramble made for a difficult time for both the receivers and throwers! Touch football doesn’t allow for the Tigers to play the kind of football we like to see.

If the OL can get a lot better the running game will be good. All the backs yesterday played well I thought. Shipley is a talented guy but so are the others.

The loss of Phommachanh was a terrible thing to happen. If you read my post you know that I am a big follower of him.
In the last quarter of the game he played almost perfectly and took the white team under his control and won the game.
The last quarter was Clemson football at its best from an offensive standpoint. I hope his injury turn out to be minor. With TP and DJ the Tigers can be a very good team. We all saw yesterday how much we will miss TL16 !

Agree with what you're saying. Although I see some posts on here that seem to have overlooked half our starters didn't play... Or it seemed like half. Plus coupled with the goal of no one getting hurt.

Darn shame about TP. If indeed turns out to be an Achilles tear, we won't see him this year. Was reading an NFL article that said 33% of those injuries, the player never sees the field again and roughly 33% that do return are not the same talent. Let's pray TP is one of the rare exceptions.

No replacement for TL16 but we all saw what DJ U did last year with ND and BC games. Ngata kinda concerns me. We have zero idea on how good he can be because he hasn't played a full game without being hurt...

I didn’t miss TL16. DJU is all of that and possibly more.***

We watched a different game yesterday if you thought DJ played up to the standards TL did for the last three year.

He was very ordinary at best playing under the spring game rules.

I have watched spring games where TL and DW4 have looked very ordinary as well.

Dabo is like Dean Smith in making greatness ordinary when he wants as Smith did with Jordan. Dabo called back two TL16 bombs in the Spring 2018 game in ludicrous QB competition.

Are you related to Joe Biden?

No doubt DJU has the ability. No doubt I think he'll be great. Was it different than TL16, no doubt about it.

Imho, Dabo said as much in his spring game wrap. Talking about needing to get in the film room, scouting et al.

Dabo played this Spring Game just like every other when

Apr 5, 2021, 12:22 PM

there is a top tier opponent scheduled in the front end of the season. Show only vanilla on film, keep the majority of the offense under wraps, so that the Kirby Smarts of the world have to go only on past tendencies to prepare. I'm not going to argue about the merits of that, it has been pretty doggone successful the last several years.

Um...we have run the same offense for years. Sure we have a few wrinkles but Kirby has already seen 97% of the plays we will against UGA. The thought that we have a ton of secret plays he has not seen is silly at best.
