I believe in DJU…

Sep 13, 2021, 3:25 PM

But I can’t understand how he has regressed so much from last year. I know our OL hasn’t played very well, but they weren’t too elite last year either.

Just to start a discussion and hear some opinions;

Does anyone believe that if he is struggling with any of our conference opponents, Dabo will pull him and give one of the other QBs the full reign? (Will aka Doug Flutie Taylor I hope).

Also Dabo mentioned that Taylor has made some incredible passes in practice, I’d like to see him sling it a little bit in the games to really throw some coaches off haha.

Kelly got 4 games after the freshman phenom TLaw showed up, and he was gone.

I think we got really spoiled watching Deshaun and Trevor in the last several years. 2 amazing QBs that were ready to plug and play the day they arrived.

I think DJ is going to be just fine and as much as we sometimes point fingers at the players, we really need to look at the coaches in game 1 especially when you compare it to game 2. I realize the difference in the opponent, but even the play calling was more creative in game 2. Simple runs for DJ made a lot of difference.

#5 is going to be a good one, and he will only get better as the surrounding cast improves and gets more experience. We need the O-line to gel, we need the running backs to find the holes and make the blocks, and we need the receivers to get open and/or block downfield. We need the coaches to do their thing as well on the offensive side of the ball.

Game 1 versus game 6 are going to be a lot different.

If you are trying to intimate that making the move to Trevor

was anything other than right, you are dead wrong. The results obviously speak for themselves, with that Natty trophy sitting on the shelf.

If anything, be thankful Dabo did Kelly a solid and did not wait until after the FIFTH game to make the move. If he had, Kelly would not have been able to get himself an extra season elsewhere.

DJ will have to be horrendous in order for this to happen. One bad game against Jawja not enough to get him out. He was so-so against S.C. State. This week, an ACC opponent, will be important for him to show improvement.

I agree, but we could lose to an ACC opponent with the product he put on the field against SC St. We will have some unbearably close games unless he makes a vast improvement. Our defense will make it difficult on almost all the teams left on our schedule to score, but we can’t keep having all these interceptions, incorrect reads, trying to hand off in the wrong direction, etc. He was still staring down receivers pretty bad against SC st.

Big Cinco had a lot more talent and experience around him last year when he played. Etienne, for example, drew a lot attention and defenses had to account for that. I think if Lyn J could get back in the #1 RB spot that would help.

Agree, plus it was only his second game and there are a lot of moving parts with most Oline moved to new positions, even Justyn Ross, thankfully back, but playing a new position. If still out of rhythm after 4-5 games then start to wonder.

I think he will see it on tape his fundamentals are not near as sound as last year. A couple of lobs he threw in the SC State game his feet were side by side and he just lobed it like he was playing a game at the fair. He is smart and will figure it out.

DJ must be the best option or he wouldn't be there. I though Taisun had a good grasp of the offense and looked in control. His injury set him back or he may have won the job. Problem is none of them are Trevor.

works on his footwork and his reads. He’s nervous as heck out there and needs some confidence. That confidence comes with experience… knowing what you’re looking at pre-snap and understanding your primary, secondary, and third option/security blanket.

Lots of room for improvement in his footwork as well…

Sep 13, 2021, 3:51 PM

Most of his overthrows can be attributed to his footwork and throwing off his back foot.

I don't at this point. Pull DJU and allow TP to run the offense for a bit. The coaching staff must not get stuck in the mire so to speak if DJ continues to struggle. Our resistance to change has caused us more problems than just qb issues to be frank.

While theoretically on the table, I seriously doubt that it comes to benching DJ. Despite his less than impressive start, he has several things going for him. 1) Our depth and experience is lacking in the QB room, so much so that even a D+ graded DJ is likely better than the next best option. 2) Our defense appears to be back to elite status, so it won’t take many offensive points to win games 3) As of right now, our regular season opponents don’t appear to be much of a threat, so even an inefficient and sputtering O should be able to get by without another loss.

I am hoping he continues to improve week over week and the O begins to gel better overall, and that by season’s end, our early season offensive woes are all but forgotten. Hoping that the game 1 loss and the resulting heavy criticism lights a fire under the guys and gives them the hunger needed to win championships.

Clemson fans have completely forgotten what it looks like to break in a new quarterback that doesn't step on campus playing better than any junior or senior QB Clemson has ever had. DW and TL are generational talents. DJ is going to be absolutely great. There are alot of moving parts this year between DJ, Oline, RB's, and especially receiver. They are all figuring out their roles and learning to play together. If this past weekend was the first week of the season then everyone would be grumbling as usual but very few would think the world was ending. Heck... this is how Clemson plays at the beginning of every-single-season. It's mind blowing the difference between the first couple games and the last half of the season.

Georgia game sucked. Check. Time to move on.

Last weekend the goal was not to have DJ pass it all over the place, it was to work on all of the personnel. The offense did perfectly fine the first half and then they pretty much put in all the subs and shut it down in the second half. Clemson could have named any score it wanted with DJ and the starters in.

I have no problem with people pointing out areas for improvement. It is absolutely asinine though, for all of the DJ sucks, bench DJ for the backup (always most popular, right?), DJ will never make it stuff. He's Clemson family and he deserves our support until he shows he can't do it.

Be patient, enjoy the ride, and for goodness sake... stop attacking the character of our players.

Woah, take it easy. I believe in him. I’m just noticing some things that are alarming. I agree with him having a lot of new moving parts around him and he will most likely look like a different QB in a few weeks than he has thus far. I coached football (HS Varsity) and I saw some mistakes in the SC St games that starters don’t usually make, especially not in their 4th game starting. I want him to pan out as much as anyone, I just think the game looks very fast for him right now, and it should be slowing down.

In all honesty if I was grading him against SC st, I would say he struggled. That is alarming considering they are not only the easiest team on our schedule, but in a different universe than even the weakest ACC opponents. If we blow out Ga Tech and look smoother overall on Offense, I will feel a lot better. If he struggles 3 weeks in a row, I will be concerned.

What I know is he is 2-2 as a starter and how many years has it been since we have had that. I believe he will learn to be a great QB but the old saying "he needs to slow down and let his brain catch up with his feet" applies. Not all 5 star players pan out.

Good post and appreciate the perspective. David Hood and Walt on the radio reiterated the difference between last year and this season with the WR/RB discrepancy that DJ relied on last season in those two games. While I agree that is likely a cause of DJ’s performance so far this season, I think mechanics and skill is playing a role here too.

In the UGA game DJ was struggling going thru his progression and avoiding pressure. Both were areas he needed to improve even coming out of high school. It was acknowledged on the 247 Sports recruiting profile as a scout stated:

“ Can still improve going through progressions and finding secondary receivers as well as escaping pressure. “ (Link below). Surely the coaching staff and Streeter are working with him on improving those areas of his game.
