What about Billy McMillon

Jun 6, 2015, 3:43 PM

What about considering Billy McMillon? SC native who played in the early 90's for the Tigers. He could be hitting coach (He batted over .391 in 1991, .372 in 1992, and .377 in 1993 for the tigers) and bring in a pitching coach. Currently he's the double A Manager in Portland, Maine for the Red Sox after coaching single A ball in Greenville. Well respected in the industry. Lives in Columbia during the off season.

I assume you mean his race...I think we are beyond that

and anyone that made it to MLB multiple times and has succeeded as a manager in the minors makes him qualified in my book. I don't think he would want to go from AA ball to Clemson though.

For fear that he'd have to coach in front of a larger fan base?

No the fact that he is progressing on a professional level. College is cut throat between recruiting and unreasonable fans and success in MLB would be an easier path.

I believe he was minor league manager of the year in 2014.

Jun 6, 2015, 5:57 PM

Think that was for all minor leagues.

I kind of asked in another thread, but what's the transition like for a minor league manager to college. Seems like learning and dealing with recruiting would be a pretty big hurdle. I honestly have no idea what the precedents are. McMillon is certainly a great former Tiger and appears to be doing well as a coach. Only 43 years old. Paired with a kickass recruiter he could be something. Doubt salary would be much of an issue.

I would also like to see McMillon interviewed if there is interest in leaving pro for college.
