I am not posting this in a pejorative way but i wonder ifCBB

has a not so good reputation amongst recruits. I think most of us will agree that his recruiting is mediocre at best. Is it that he has a reputation of not being someone you would like to play for? Not a players coach? Would certainly like to hear what you might have heard.
Tks and go Tigers.

Class of ‘71. Went through “rat season” and glad I did.

I’ve heard

he passes gas a lot during in-home visits.

Probably not a good thing.

I think other coaches use he is on the hot seat and might not be there much longer who recruit against them. That is why they have had a hard time getting top 100 recruits since PJ Hall.

The recruits are decent since Hall but not difference makers until their third year maybe.

I don't blame those other coaches, but I do blame our administration for waiting way too long to "pull the trigger" on BB. He doesn't cut it, and that's not a new thing.

If your speculation is correct, those coaches must sound really dumb when the recruits find out brownell just signed a contract extension...

Yes, but the buyout has gone down.

Part of his problem is he is not recruiting at Duke, UNC, Kansas, Kentucky, Gonzaga, etc, etc.. No coach at Clemson is ever going to get a bunch of 5* McDonalds all-Americans to come to Clemson. We need to accept the fact that about the best we can do is a bunch of 3*s and an occasional 4*. It is doubtful if Clemson will ever really shake up the college basketball world. 100% of Clemson fans are die hard football fans. Only about 5% really feel strongly about basketball. We need to accept this. I don’t think any of us will ever see a Clemson NC in basketball in our lifetimes.

We aren't taking about NCs. We are talking just making the NCAAT on a consistent bases with an occasional top 15-25 team.

I agree high 3 stars and occasional 4 star recruits can help you build a consistent good program.

But Brad has proven he can't get these type of recruits and develop them.

He has to have PJ Hall or an Aamir Simms as 4 star recruits, but unfortunately can't get enough of them.

Both Rick Barnes and OP could develop 3 star talent which you have to be able to win consistently at Clemson.

"...Only about 5% really feel strongly about basketball." If they think like me (which might not be a good thing) they don't allow their emotions to be vested in a continual letdown. If evidence shows that basketball is on the road to compete with the upper tier I believe Clemson fans would be strong basketball supporters. Winning draws support.

Which I keep saying, Are there enough Clemson fans who are important members of bot anf AD that remember and liked the times when Clemson won under Barnes and OP?

Beating UNC on the Buckner jam?

Clemson getting to the ACCT Championship game over Duke in semis?

Beating Duke 74-47?

Hosting top 10 match up vs Wake and Duke?

Those time were not that long ago. Well are there important people at Clemson that remember?

Don't forget a good many of the seasons that Bill Foster https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bill_Foster_(basketball,_born_1936) and Cliff Ellis https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cliff_Ellis had also. Both coaches took Clemson to heights they had never seen before.First NCAA Tournament appearance was under Bill Foster and the Tigers first ACC Championship of any kind was won under Cliff Ellis. Both coaches had a lot of good players.Horace Grant under Cliff Ellis was the first ACC Player Of The Year in Clemson Basketball history and Larry Nance under Bill Foster went on to have a good career in the NBA with the Phoenix Suns and he won the Slam Dunk competition during the NBA All Star weekend.

Copy Auburn’s model. Hire a wildly charismatic recruiting machine that lives on the dark end of the ethical street. The NCAA is not a viable enforcement entity and can be run over with impunity these days. Worst case you can out lawyer them just like several schools have done in the recent past. So who is our dude that fits that mold?

This goes to show that cheating has no real consequences. Auburn is #1 and currently on probation through 2025. It is Pearl’s 2nd major rules violation with NCAA.

Could have been Will Wade but he is not fond of his alma matter. He thinks Clemson is not good of a basketball school to win at, but also knew that he wouldn't have gotten away with the stuff he pulled at LSU. That is lost now as long as the FBI stuff is over his head.

Another guy now would be good is Kelvin Sampson who is from NC. The too many phone calls problem he got in trouble with at Indiana years ago is not illegal now. I believe Houston is such a good job with the new arena and going to Big 12 he will retire there.

I like Boykin at Oklahoma State who is from SC who is a great recruiter who just had some minor violations there.

But let's face it. CLEMSON would never go there...

Bull.

Feb 7, 2022, 11:12 PM [ in reply to Re: I am not posting this in a pejorative way but i wonder ifCBB ]

I totally understand the lack of basketball tradition here at Clemson, and the effect that has on recruiting, but that doesn't mean it always has to be that way. That doesn't make one lick of sense. All it takes is one good class to turn things around, and show that Clemson can win big. A dynamic coach that can sell what makes Clemson special and unique, much like Dabo did with football (and yes, I understand the differences), could absolutely make it happen. The ACC isn't nearly what it was 40, 30, 20 years ago where we were recruiting against 6 top 5-15 teams every single year. Sure, it's a bit of an uphill battle, but there's no reason that the right coach, with the backing from the University, couldn't bring a significantly higher level of basketball talent into Clemson.

Kids follow a winner. Fans will follow a winner. Please don't make me list the number of teams that have passed us in the last 12 years. I'll just start with FSU, Bama, and Auburn who has the same limitations we have.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

That is pure BS. Duke was not a dominant ACC basketball

Feb 8, 2022, 9:01 AM [ in reply to Re: I am not posting this in a pejorative way but i wonder ifCBB ]

program before Rat Face got there. There is NO inherent reason Clemson could not rise the same way, except that we continually settle for less.

Same BS the pundits were spouting about the football program years ago. We should keep Tommy Bowden because nine wins a year was our ceiling, and we should be happy with that.

Those idiots were wrong about football, and they COULD be wrong about basketball, if Clemson Powers That Be just made up their minds not to just pay lip service to basketball.

You should really be asking why no Clemson coach has ever had consistent recruiting success.

Purnell only had 1 good class ranking wise and those players didn't pan out (Milton Jennings, Noel johnson, Devin booker, and donte hill)

Brownell has had the benefit of new facilities, but Clemson has never recruited well.
