I am concerned about the state of officiating in college

Jan 14, 2020, 1:29 AM

football. Three violations that regularly have a dramatic impact on the outcome of games, depending on how they are called or not called: Holding, pass interference, and targeting. For all intents and purposes, holding and pass interference are ignored, to the point that players are coached to openly violate these rules. When offensive players are allowed to block by grabbing a handful of jersey and controlling the opponent, as they do on every single play, it changes the way the game is played, and impacts outcomes. When DBs and WRs are allowed to grab, push, and make all sorts of contact while the ball is in the air, and are coached to do this, it impacts the outcome of games. Players are being coached to violate the rules of the game, because they know refs don't have the guts and integrity to consistently enforce those rules. Then, when a ref does throw a flag for one of these, players, fans, and coaches are all dumbfounded, and angry because it seems so random (and it is). As far as targeting goes, I know player safety is paramount, but it punishes an unintentional accident the same as an intentional dirty hit. It is a rule that is difficult to enforce fairly and properly with any consistency, and all too often punishes a good football hit. Football is a rough, tough game, and the targeting rule needs to be redone with that in mind, with the goal being to punish dirty players who intentionally try to hurt their opponents, and not to punish aggresive but clean football.

Holding is an integral part of SEC OL play.

But that offensive PI call on us that took away the TD was criminally bad.

I have accepted that holding is rarely called. The thing that makes me mad is when they call goldingz it seems to be away from the play and rocky tacky yet major holding calls are ignored.

I am more concerned with the targeting and blindside block rules and the lack of consistency in how they are called.

Our opinions dont matter thoughm

I'm worried about the rules...

Jan 14, 2020, 1:31 AM

I think we need to protect players, but we are taking away legitimate football playing with some of these rules.

Unfortunately human element is part of the game

Jan 14, 2020, 1:32 AM

As fans we can debate. Players just have to go to next play. As a cautionary note I do think basketball got ruined by officiating. Any contested shot in paint is a foul. It's boring to watch.

"human element" is often used as an excuse to not do

things the right way. The standard for enforcing the rules should be incredibly high, and right now they are not; watching one game, any game, would verify that.

I agree with everything you're saying but most of the people on the board tonight or tomorrow or in the near future aren't going to support you very much because they're afraid they'll will appear to be blaming the refs for our loss tonight. Some other time

Curious to know what happened to Higgins. That’s two games he’s gone to the locker room while looking in less pain than me on a stair master.

the player just enough to make a clean block. Besides, there is already a rule against blocking in the back; that's enough.

So you think the BS blocking call on Tee and the BS no call

Jan 14, 2020, 2:00 AM

when Amari was clearly pushed before the ball arrived were accurate? Plus the BS offensive PI call that took a TD off the board didn’t play a factor in the games outcome? Trevor played terrible, but let’s not pretend the above calls mentioned weren’t horrendous

Holding doesn't really bother me. I don't find myself

Jan 14, 2020, 1:40 AM

getting worked up over real or (mostly) imaginary holding like a lot of people. I'm 100% fine with them only calling the egregious holds and I think the called and "missed" calls are generally pretty even in this area. Every single fan base thinks the other team got away with a zillion holding penalties.

PI and targeting I 100% agree with. I do think with instant replay that they get *most* of the targeting calls correct, but PI is horribly subjective and the amount of contact allowed by officials varies wildly from crew to crew. It's like basketball. Some like to let em play and others call every little bump and grab. But the thing that really gets me is the inconsistency. Like tonight the officials were really letting them play early in the game, then started flagging almost every questionable play, and then at the end just totally frigging blew the Tee Higgins play. That was a TD all day long.. contact both ways, no actual push off, and the defender just fell down.

FWIW Pac 12 officials have been under fire for years now and it's no secret that they have blown A LOT of calls and have received a ton of public backlash for it. I think some of it flies under the radar because of the time slots that those games are frequently played in, but i hear about it all of the time listening to CFB podcasts. I'm not sure why a Pac 12 crew would be selected to officiated the most important game of the year. They probably avoid officials from conferences involved, but does it just rotate aside from that?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

even?

Jan 14, 2020, 1:43 AM

OSU had precisely zero holding calls in our game. Does that mean zero were missed too?

It’s not called on purpose we can get away with more than we do. Someone should tell Robbie Caldwell.

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-20yr.jpgringofhonor-obed.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

How many did we have?

Jan 14, 2020, 1:49 AM

Probably like 1? That's a fairly insignificant difference and since OSU was generating more QB pressures it makes sense.

Tonight I'm pretty sure we got called for 0 holding penalties despite LSU being in the backfield pressuring TL for a lot of the game. It's like with basketball... the more aggressive team creating the contact in the paint gets the foul calls. That was definitely LSU tonight. Our DL was getting no push at all and our only pressure was coming from blitzing LBers and the occasional twist or stunt up front (usually accompanied by blitzing LBers) and those were generally free runners coming at Burrow. You aren't going to generate holding calls like that very often.

Re: Holding, I prefer to see the rules enforced. I don't

Jan 14, 2020, 1:51 AM [ in reply to Holding doesn't really bother me. I don't find myself ]

think the refs should have the discretion to ignore rules and then enforce them randomly. That's terrible for the game. If a they don't like a rule like holding, they need to abolish it. All of these rules are pretty clear cut, except for targeting, and should be enforced consistently as written, or they should be taken out. Ignoring the rules and random enforcement gets worse and worse every year.
