always be a familiar refrain) but the officiating last night was some of the worst I've ever seen.
The non-called PIs on GT in the first quarter, the TERRIBLE PI on Van Smith, the "backwards pass" by DW4 that wasn't blown down and had to be reviewed, and then the clear backwards pass by Thomas that was immediately ruled a forwards pass and not even reviewed...
The PI on Smith really changed the complexity of the game for a while because they ended up pinning us into our own endzone, forcing us to call really conservative running plays, and forcing a 3-and-out.
I'm not saying they were conspiring to call against Clemson in particular but the officiating has gotten to be so bush league in the ACC the last few years and it could really affect a game at some point.

Yes we had 10 penalties to their 2 or 3. Palmer kept on saying the PIs were called the same both ways. I wouldn't have had a problem with the no calls on their DBs if they wouldn't have called that on Van Smith. Text book play. That is the video you show your kids how to defend the pass and they throw a flag on it. Ridiculous. Some false starts and offsides were our fault but I say atleast twice where their D jump offisides and never was called.

motion Smith timed it PERFECTLY. He didn't get there a millisecond too soon.
I always feel like I've mentally prepared myself for the mixture of inane drivel and absolute dross that will seep out of Palmer's mouth but he never ceases to infuriate me when he calls one of our games. No analytical insight, very little preparation, and frequent contradictions. It's like his whole prep for calling a game is catching Sportscenter occasionally.

(The GT backwards pass).
It absolutely can be reviewed for an immediate recovery (we did recover immediately), and I'm at a loss as to why it wasn't reviewed and why we didn't call a TO to challenge/force a review.
The PI stuff was funny (but only because we won the game). Late in the game on a non-call where te GT defender didn't allow our receiver to come back to the ball Palmer said "They've been letting them get away with that all night, good no call." What a short memory. The PI call on Van Smith was bad, but I can almost accept it in real time because it was so fast it looked like he had to get there early, but if its gonna be called that closely you have to do so all around.
These refs were amateur hour. (Don't get me started on why it took 30 seconds to call an obvious safety).

Agreed on the safety. But I wish they would just keep the flag in their pocket on a bang bang play like Vans.

I saw it, and was extremely concerned myself. It literally appeared the Tech DB's were just plowing into or even tackling Clemson WR's without looking back or making the slightest attempt to play the ball, and were not getting flagged.
They're 1-on-1 on islands, with Roof loading the box up to stop the run; that was extremely pivotal. If they're allowed to get away with that they're absolutely going to.
Contrariwise, Van Smith made an absolutely beautifully-timed, textbook play on the ball that was so pretty it should serve as the Gold Standard for young DB's on this is how you play the ball and not the man - he even reached in, swatted the ball away without so much as grazing the guy's jersey - and the ref throws a flag. I'm sure Mike Reed wanted to wade out onto the field and rip the hand of the ref who threw the flag off; whatever, that was atrocious.
There were about 10 highly questionable calls in the game, and Palmer the Apologist got it 100% wrong - there was zero consistency or fairness to any of them. I'd attribute it to points-shaving or politics or some such but honestly it just appeared to be startlingly inept; for whatever reason we just got the bad end of an utterly inept crew.
The one that turned my head around was how quick they were to blow that backwards pass dead. That was absolutely - and transparently - a live ball, and they tried to shut it down and get onto the next play. If you're a conspiracy theorist, that one looked more than a little funny. What made me doubt conspiracy, though, was the way they were all over that Clemson INT-turned-fumble-turned-safety in the end zone; that one they got correct and if they were trying to fudge, you'd think they definitely would have tried to fudge that one.
I think they were just bad at their jobs. Real bad.

Imo they had no choice in reviewing that one and there really wasn't anything else they could have called it but they probably knew that if they called that a forward pass gt would hurry and snap the ball then they could just blame it on having to make a call so quickly or something to that effect
