I am a little puzzled about our 2022 recruiting?

Nov 12, 2021, 10:14 AM

We have 12 commits listed on Tnet but I think we have another kicker not listed but maybe he is a greyshirt? That said, Dabo made a statement along the lines of "we are done with offers for 2022" when asked about adding another OL to replace Tchio. It didn't sound like he was specific to OL. I would think we need another OL but also need more than one RB, and of course we all agree we need a good slot receiver, maybe Stellato or Spector fills that roll next year. I would think we need another DE as well, we are loosing at least 2.

By my counts and not taking a schollie away from any walk-ons but I count 19 open schollies at season end. We have 12 commits currently and I dont see 7 guaranteed silent's. Then add on the fact that we will likely lose 1-4 with transfers or early draft. I think there is potential that Ross, Booth, maybe even Davis since he stays injured and sometimes a questionable like Henry may go to early draft?

That said, it seems like 20 recruits is a minimum and 22 would be a better guess even if we had to take a walk-on schollie. Just seems to me we are way short on numbers for current commits. I think the only silent's I could guess at is ETN and Greene. Any others that may be solid commits?

Anyone have a better message than I am seeing?

Gotta save some schollys to give out to coaches' kids and their friends from Daniel HS in the spring.

Yeah. We haven’t had a single Daniel player pan out, have we?

I can only assume that the coaches don't want to randomly hand out some offers to players they don't know very well. Hopefully they will change their philosophy for 2023 since there's time for them to actually visit and offer more guys.

This is a transition year since we dont know who my leave since last year didnt count covid wise. I think they are struggling like many to manage their numbers. You know super seniors are done but a normal senior could stay and you've got the portal. they will get it worked out though

You are missing that every player that currently counts against the 85 scholarship limit has the opportunity to return next season. That means the only available scholarships are the ones currently unused or those used by walk-ons. Assuming we have seniors and juniors that move on we may have more than 13 scholarships available but it is not guaranteed. Schools taking full classes in 2022 are going to have to run players off or not honor the extra year of eligibility given to all players due to Covid.

I do not believe that current seniors who exercise their COVID waiver next season count against the 85.

Given that, I count 18 open scholarship slots if you aren't allocating any to walk-ons or incoming transfers.

You are correct. We can carry more than 85. We were planning on 18 and have had 4 open up via the portal. This doesn't include the juniors who've graduated and technically are seniors... But could opt for another year.

Sorry, but if you've graduated and on the scout team (Edwards boys) then imo, Clemson has more than fulfilled its obligations. Cold hard truth, if we want to continue to hang with the big boys, our roster management has to change. Perhaps the 6 misses that we were hoping to get can be filled with portal guys. Otherwise, this year doesn't become a one off.

She got a job that would require a lot more of her time.

Said she would try to post recruiting nuggets when she could, but they would be sparse.

@ClemsonPaw hasn't posted since the first 2 games... At least not FB board.

Would love to see the NCAA grant a waiver on the 85 scholarship limit in 2022, but I have not seen anything to suggest this has been given. Articles granting 7 additional signees, above the 25 man limit, all indicate 85 is still the limit on total scholarships in 2022. Also included an article from May on the super senior topic.

We are only carrying 82 schollies right now and that is counting Dukes, Tchio, etc, those that transferred this season.

I don't expect players like XT, Goodrich, or Galloway to exercise thier super senior status especially when they are getting passed on roster. XT will likely get a combine offer as a senior. I think we have a solid 18-19 open schollies plus the unexpected. Obviously I don't know what those guys are going to do but I still feel like we are short on recruits in 2022.

And Dabo has said that the Portal is not their development model, he hasn't used it yet, and I don't expect him to magically change his mind overnight. I see the portal as a last resort for Dabo and that player will likely need to have multiple years of eligibility for Dabo to consider him.

Re: I am a little puzzled about our 2022 recruiting?

Nov 12, 2021, 12:55 PM

Yes we have 82 and Tchio makes 4 currently available. 6 more based on current walk-ons brings us to 10. Coaches may know of 3-4 others that will likely move on. I agree we will have the unexpected but Dabo has never been one to risk a players scholarship by over signing.

Our coaches get paid to recruit, not fans. The numbers you reference may change this afternoon and most certainly will change before the signing date in February but the top recruits will mostly be gone by then. Recruiting is a constant moving target in the age of the portal.

Here’s what I don’t understand. The teams we’re trying to compete with on a Championship stage are taking 20 to 25 almost yearly. If we continue to sign small classes while guys are portaling out and going pro, how will we ever compete against those teams. And don’t tell me about the 2 National Championships as almost zero rules that applied then are relevant now

If we don't change the numbers strategy with the new portal math then will not compete with the top tier teams. BTW, what are the odds that we lose a linebacker or two into the portal at seasons end? Maybe Bentley, Trotter, or others? Looking at the top 20 teams in recruiting for the upcoming class we are dead last on total number of commits. Bama and UGA are nearing full capacity. The staff has there work cut out for them to end up with a top 10 class. Hope they can pull it off.
