QB impressions from today's first half (thanks a lot ACCN)

Apr 9, 2022, 5:46 PM

... Klubnick looked pretty good for true freshman. Arm strenght more than adequate, good accuracy, great foot speed and ability to extend plays, quick release, everything we've heard is true. Still some work to do, still needs to add some muscle, but plenty to be excited about there. DJ looked somewhat improved over last year's total disaster, and he did make some nice throws, showed off arm strength a few times, and executed well at times. At other times, he missed wide open guys and seemed out of rhythm like the DJ we cringed over last season. It may be a bit unfair, but I'm still looking for a glimpse of that guy who put up 465 yds against Notre Dame on the road as a true freshman, and while there's no doubt DJ is working hard and steadily improving, I thought he was "meh" for a guy who has been through two full seasons, one as a study behind #1 overall pick, and one as full-time starter.

Caveat: Both QBs played with no help on offense whatsoever, what with injuries to OL, WR, and RB, not to mention playing against one of the deepest most talented defenses in the country.

Bottom line: We'll be in better shape at QB this fall than we were last year. Unless DJ really turns it up a notch, which could happen, it's just a matter of time before Klubnick wins the starting job. The competition will make them both better going into fall. With the arrival of Hunter Johnson, it only helps. Johnson has not been a great QB by any means, but having a QB with his experience and maturity could mean a lot. If one QB gets injured or gets into a rut, we will have options, where most of last year we really had zero. The real question may be, how long does DJ hang around if he loses the starting job?

I didn’t see much improvement. He shows flashes of what could be, but his ability to sustain drives is nonexistent. One great play sandwiched in between 3-4 bad plays ain’t getting it done. Also, his completion % was spot on what is was last year. Somewhere in the 40s%.

I have no doubt he is working hard. But I feel like he’s not listening to his coaches and taking criticism and learning from it.

I really think he just doesn’t have the capacity to do it at this level. We keep saying potential and improvement etc. but at some point, we have to move forward. I distinctly remember seeing improvement and new things out of Watson and Lawrence every game. Not saying perfect, but we saw new plays, new throws, surprise athletics and highlights. I’m not sure he could win a starting spot at any power 5 school if he went portal.

Good take. As for your question about...

Apr 9, 2022, 6:04 PM

how long does DJ stick around, I would guess that 2018 was a pretty good preview of what we're going to see in 2022. How's Mizzou looking at QB this year? Or maybe San Diego State?

Being the overly optimistic person I am, or sunshine pumper , as some on here say, I don’t see DJ as someone who would transfer mid-season. If he loses the job to Cade I would expect him to transfer somewhere closer to home (the real USC?) after the season for his last year or two.

Big Dave will yank DJ faster than you can shake a stick...

Apr 9, 2022, 6:15 PM

when Cade is named the starter.

Put that in the bank. No big deal for the team.

I’m not sure Dave is calling the shots. DJ blocked him on social media some time ago and Mom was on campus with little brother today. No Dave in sight.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

That would be a good thing if he's not calling the shots

Apr 9, 2022, 6:49 PM

Thanks for the info!

Big Dave's recent post about Clemson regarding Matayo had me thinking otherwise.

Not Dave's decision.

I don't see how he could win a spot at Southern Cal.

It’s really hard to draw any real conclusions from today

Apr 9, 2022, 6:18 PM

that would apply to the opener this fall.

Nothing we saw out there was a real game situation, whether we it was a defense looking like world beaters while simply playing “touch”football or a couple of QBs who struggled while being harassed on every snap with no ability to use their legs to help move the team.

The game is a spring practice ending event with very little actual observable importance regarding the upcoming season.

I agree with Dabo ... college ball needs real preseason games pitting actual full squads against one another. The split squad nonsense is pretty worthless activity.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I agree with you for the most part. Still, at points...

Apr 9, 2022, 6:33 PM

you could see the exact same things that we saw last year from DJU... and if he's now totally healthy and in shape, that's NOT good news. Dabo is the ultimate pumper. He will stay positive in his comments about DJU right up to the time he yanks him as the starter and puts CK in. The look on Dabo's face after DJU's last pass of the first half was all you had to see. He looked embarrassed. I think he already knows the kid ain't got it.

Re: I agree with you for the most part. Still, at points...

Apr 9, 2022, 7:25 PM

I think you are correct. I don’t believe the kid can do it at this level. Bobby Bowden, in one of the last interviews before he passed, was asked about why FSU fell so far and he said they got lazy. Not lazy as in out of shape or not trying, he said the staff got lazy and just counted stars. They figured just get the most 5 stars and pack them in and it would take care of itself. I hate to think that may have been what happened with the kid, but I don’t see how a coach overlooked all the fundamentals or never challenged him mentally before handing him the keys.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I agree with you 100 Percent. And I think Dabo has decided

this game is just something that has to be done...So, get it over with and move on to the summer...

OF Course Coach knows what he

Apr 9, 2022, 6:48 PM

in 2021 but treated DJ as he would with his Son(s) plus he didn't have a lot of options with the backups left in the room.

He KNOWs what Cade has now & will have more of a little bit later in our schedule and he will push the orange button to release the bomb needed to win those upcoming wars.

With that said DJ will be treated with total respect, as he should, and will still be a QB for many many plays and in many games.

Re: QB impressions from today's first half (thanks a lot ACCN)

Apr 9, 2022, 7:01 PM

At this point the question for me is not “where’s the DJ from ND?” It’s “what would Trevor Lawrence been able to do against that ND team THAT NIGHT?”

Really starting to think we would have boat raced them. That DJ is the anomaly. We have 13 games from last year to know what the real DJ is.

Re: QB impressions from today's first half (thanks a lot ACCN)

Apr 9, 2022, 7:30 PM

Maybe, but he was impressive the week before ND as well throwing for 342 in a win over BC. He was a totally different QB last year, no doubt.

DJ as a freshman even against Notre Dame

Apr 9, 2022, 7:10 PM

Yes. He threw for a bunch of yards. But you could still see a lot of flaws in his game. He couldn’t even make a simple handoff to ETN sometimes. Terrible footwork. Can’t read defenses. Can’t run a basic pitch sweep much less than option or RPO. He made mistakes in the Notre Dame game that had he not made we probably would’ve won the game. People simply look at the big arm and yards without seeing all the flaws.
