If someone had told you in July that

Jan 6, 2022, 4:26 PM

the NIL thing would cause so much chaos that the easiest way to solve the chaos would be to actually institute term contracts, non-competes and actually pay the players.....would you have believed it?

Yes, yes I absolutely would.

Jan 6, 2022, 4:28 PM

Now, I'm not so sure that I would have expected it to hit so hard, so fast like it has. I would have expected a slower timeline over a 2/3 years to get where we are now, but yes I would have expected it at some point. It would have been inevitable.

And, I think it's inevitable that the problem will worsen once all these schemes and plans become more sophisticated and institutionalized.

yes, this could be seen coming from MILES away

Jan 6, 2022, 4:29 PM

the day NIL was "signed into law".........was the worst day for College Football.

This is EXACTLY why I think we have all be played by the politicians.

We have what? The states are all in charge now? Governors?

Different rules for all 50 states?

No regulation at all?

This is nuts. So nuts that I (a traditionalist) have actually said that it's better to just pay players now AND even have a player draft.

I truly believe the top schools will one day attach to pro teams and be feeders to them. Those teams may not even be linked to a university outside of simply branding and location. Enrolling in school may only be a contract BONUS and not even a requirement.

NUTS man. And we can't go back.

academics, grades, graduation can still all be a part of contracts. Plenty of people are getting paid to do a job at their university while going to school in other industries. I don't see why it has to be any different. College Football can be professionalized while maintaining the academic requirement. I call BS on the argument to the contrary.

What we had was professionals generating billions and calling it amateurism and a minority group of fat cats lining their pockets because of it.

What we have now is the wild wild west.

It's time to professionalize it and maintain the academic requirement and get it under control.

The states have nothing to do with NIL. Why does nobody on TigerNet try to understand what NIL is?

The States have plenty to do with NIL...

Jan 6, 2022, 8:26 PM [ in reply to Re: If someone had told you in July that ]

...and you clearly don't understand. Why don't you educate us on NIL and how wonderful it is for CFB?

Years ago I proposed a similar model. Speaking of FSU, I said:

Change their name to the Tallahassee Seminoles. Change their affiliation from NCAA to NFL. Let the NFL figure out who their players are and how much they are paid. Make education optional. Tell and 18 year old kid, "While you're in Tallahassee we'll pay your tuition. It's optional. Totally up to you. If you're good enough you can stay on the team 3 or 4 years and get a college degree while there."

They could still play at the same stadium. The NFL could buy it or rent it from FSU.

I made this proposal half way jesting, but only half way. My reason for posting it was I did a study on what NCAA academic minimums were to maintain eligibility and they are a farce. I has a student in my freshman math class at a JUCO where I taught. Very nice lady. She was in her mid twenties, married. She played four years of basketball at UNLV. Was a starter. No problem staying academically eligible. When she enrolled at my school she had barely enough credits to be considered a sophomore.

Who says there is chaos? Just because you don't like something doesn't mean it is bad.

In this day and age, it's hard to know what to believe.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

It would be better to just pay with contracts at this point.

Jan 6, 2022, 5:00 PM

Until some high profile kid gets burned - probably in a manner no one has even thought of at this point - its going to be wild west.

2024 white level memberbadge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I absolutely expected chaos

Jan 6, 2022, 5:19 PM

Things are still developing and aren't even close to settling down. That will take another 2-3 years at least.

Basically, some college football teams will have a payroll with no cap. I'm curious to see how high the annual costs are. The fact boosters and alumni groups are footing the bill instead of schools means the whole thing could spiral into orbit.

Re: I absolutely expected chaos

Jan 6, 2022, 6:59 PM

The lack of a salary cap on both coaches and players will likely never change. It makes me wonder why coaching hires come down to a lack of money on behalf of the school. Seems like schools that want to win can buy whatever coaches they want regardless of price. There just isn't a huge precedent of assistants having massive salaries.

There has been a call for a salary cap on coaches for at least the last ten years and the pay has only increased rapidly in that span. Makes you wonder why anyone would have the gall to put a cap on the players ability to rake in NIL money.

Well my question isn’t really if you expected the chaos. It’s more that did you expect that just paying the players would be a better option than what has transpired.

I’m pretty sure very one on Tnet said NIL was going to cause chaos as soon as it was signed by congress. Not too bad for a bunch of armchair QBs!

A tuition repay and recruiting inconvenience charge would work nicely too!

I saw early on the deep pocket school ability to pay for the 'non-skill' positions. Also, stock piling players to keep them from other programs. This is where we will have difficulty keeping up.

however, I didn't see the merry-go-round.
