I-85 btwn Gaffney and Gville. Completion date?

Aug 30, 2022, 6:26 PM

To any of my upstate Tigers fans. It seems everytime I'm going to Clemson there is construction between Gaffney and Greenville - what is the local news saying about a completion date?
What's the goal? Seems like it's always going on. I was recently coming back from Atlanta late on a Friday night and they were doin construction. That was unbelievable as they had it one lane for miles.
If i'm trying to make it to Clemson we have to leave hours early; just to be on time. It's crazy!

I tried to find it on SCDOT but could not.

Thanks!

I remember when they started and completed I-77 between Rock Hill and Charlotte and it didn't take this long! And that was a massive widening project complete with center lane dividers, etc.

I might just be unlucky and only go through when there is construction going on though!

Perfect!

Thank You Cutigerbob!

I guess, it's leaving early and dealing with it until then. That trip from Rock Hill to Clemson isn't bad except that stretch.

Here's a suggestion, take Hwy 11 and backtrack thru Pickens. My son lives in Charlotte, I take this route all the time--A little round a bout but seems quicker to me.

I'm certainly going to look into that. I appreciate it famcat! I most certainly will try it; not to have to deal with that stretch so much.

I’ve taken the highway 11 route for years from my home in the NC mountains. Not ten minutes difference in time and the drive is much, much more enjoyable. Highway 11 through the mountains from Landrum to Pickens is a great drive.
Try it if you can.

Going to G'ville from Chlt area in early October. Thinking of getting off at the Blacksberg exit and taking Hwy 29 to just north of Sberg then back to 85. Don't think NC is widening 85 from the Hwy 74 interchange to the SC line. Still two lanes each way.

There always seems to be a lot of traffic around the Greenville Spartanburg airport, especially late in the afternoon due to road construction around a bridge. We go to Clemson every Thursday from Charlotte. It is bumper to bumper.

There is construction around Pelham Rd in Greenville where they are widening the on ramp and bridge for 85 south. I think I heard this morning on the news there is going to be a lane shift there soon when they start paving.

Re: I-85 btwn Gaffney and Gville. Completion date?

Aug 31, 2022, 5:35 PM

Well when I go to G'ville in early October will get off 85 at the Duncan exit and go through Greer. One issue with Pelham Rd is the exit going south has three streets converging very close together. The exit ramp, the west lane across the bridge and a street intersecting on the right just past the exit ramp. Makes traffic bad most any time of day.

Gaffney to Spartanburg is a disaster. As someone here said, it looks like a 3rd world country.

I headed down to Spartanburg from NC last Friday evening and it took 3 hours to go <2 miles right before the Cowpens exit; there was a wreck just past it. Those "chutes of death" are now two lanes wide, so my assumption is the wreck obstructed two lanes and emergency help could not get there to clear it out. Still, I don't understand three friggin' hours. Grrrr. :( I'll take 29 next time.

Looks like all the interchanges/bridges through that stretch were original going back to the 50's/60's. Don't think they had ever been touched. Re doing all those have probably made it more complicated than a normal widening.

Re: I-85 btwn Gaffney and Gville. Completion date?

As I understand it, the railroad bridge between exits 80 and 83 (at the former Hoechst Celanese plant) factored into the delay. It's replacement required coordination with the railroad.

I travel that route (Gaffney to Spartanburg) often, and that stretch between exits 80 and 83 (especially in the northbound lane) can be hard on the nerves.

"hard on the nerves" is one way to say it, LOL!

*aggravating
*maddening
*frustrating
*crazy
*blanking silly
*senseless
*etc.

Are all other ways, I recall referring to it as we were stuck there moving inches per minute.

I feel bad for anyone that has to deal with that on a daily basis. I really do.

SMH!

I appreciate all the responses for this too! Seems like I need to just prepare for a long road trip each time that road is involved. Unless the route that has been suggested works well; which i'm hoping it works for me. Coming from Rock Hill though; not sure it will.

LOL! Trying to hold out hope!

Based on the comments; I see this isn't just my bad luck, LOL! I take that way for 1 of 2 reasons. To go to Clemson for a game or to go to Atlanta to see my sister. So, it's only 5-6 times a year, but there seemed to always be construction going on at that particular stretch.
Now I see, "that's just how it is"!
