Hypothetical: You’re the HC or OC for Clemson

Nov 7, 2021, 10:24 PM

You’re up 30-24 with 1 minute to play. Louisville has the ball on the 2 yd line. Cunningham is lined up under center. Do you let the Cardinals score so you have the potential to march down the field and kick a field goal or trust your defense to hold them? We’re all armchair coaches so would you have done? Honestly, think I woulda let them score quickly and tried to drive down the field to get in scoring position. Devils advocate- if you trust your improving QB to drive the field.

On the other hand, hypothetically, I can assuredly say I would not have let Taisun run the ball on that 3rd down play! Everybody and anybody who knows anything about College Football suspected he’d run the ball! And he did. 4th down.

Glad to get a W.

I would let Louisville score.

We chose the quick score. And that's why we're not the coach.

Not with this O

Paintballer has it right. It would take 1 minute to go from our own 20 to 40. Run up the middle 3.5 yds. Bubble screen 5 yds. Timeout. Short pass to J. Ross. Incomplete. Run up middle 8 yds. Timeout. Hail Mary. Sack. Game over.

Lol, that is exactly what would have happened.

I would have gone the quick score route. That play could have gone either way and we only needed to get into FG range and we had Potter. Mind you the terrible play calling and playing not to lose were poor decisions that put us in the predicament in the first place.

Worked out though. Thank goodness.

I listened to Dabo's post-game presser and enjoyed hearing him explain his thinking on the last possession.

Phil Kornblut (of all people) asked about the timeout we took on 2nd down. Dabo answered that he wanted to try saving our offense some time in case the Cards scored.

Once we stopped them on 3rd down, however, Dabo decided against calling timeout since the pressure was on UL to get lined up and call a play.

Good stuff.

It’s NEVER a consideration to let the other team score

Nov 7, 2021, 11:06 PM

a TD when you have a 6 point lead. Never. Now using your timeouts to preserve clock is a different story. Letting the other team score is something you do when down by 1 and you have to get the ball back so you can get a TD and 2 pt conversion to tie.

They played that perfectly imo. You can't rely on getting a chunk play with a mistake prone offense, easily rattled QB, and very little time.

Put the game in the defenses hands like you have so many times this year and in years past. Dabo is a good coach despite what anyone says.

As bad as our defense looked at times Saturday night, I'd still trust them more than our offense.
On the other hand I wouldn't let it get that close because I'd either change quarterbacks or have Shipley run the offense. He couldn't be much worse.
Sorry, but even though he did look better at times Saturday night I don't have enough faith in DJ#5 to drive the length of the field to try a potential game winning field goal But I also don't have enough faith in our O.C. to put together enough plays to get us in that position.

never believed in letting the "enemy" have a dammmmmmn thing! Not even a yard!

My attitude: STAND AND DEFEND YOUR GROUND! Which is precisely what BV and his team of Big Nasties did against LV.......and, man, was it a thing of beauty!

I absolutely do not let them score. I think everyone's insane who think the offense/DJ is improving by that much. The numbers don't suggest that, and our terrible offense continues to slip down the stat rankings. DJ is now second worst in the P5 in QB rating, second worst in ypa, fourth worst in accuracy, and fifth worst in touchdowns. You're crazy if you think I'm putting the game on his shoulders.

As for our offense playing so much better. Our season average is 112th in the country. Our yardage on Saturday would have been good for #107 in the country. Louisville is the third worst defense in the ACC (Duke and Wake are worse) and that was the second lowest yardage against them anyone has had. Our offense was not playing well Saturday. It was more of the same with two broken plays we managed to capitalize on.

All this to say we're the exact same team we've been all year. We have a historically bad offense, the worst in Clemson history. We have a pretty good defense (#8 scoring, #31 total). And there's no doubt our best coach is Venables. I'm putting the game in his hands. Those that think we should allow the TD haven't watched any of our games since 2019.

We couldn't even get a 1st down when we needed one to clinch the game. Those who think we'd air it out with DJ to get in field goal range have no sense of reality. Keep dreaming.

badge-donor-15yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I would rather rely on my defense...

since the offense is so inconsistent.

Barring injury, Klubnik will earn the starting qb job next year. I just hope the o-line and receivers improve through great recruits and experience. I think Klubnik will move the team downfield effectively. He is such a tremendous qb, but we definitely have to be good at all positions. No, I would never willingly yield points to the other team, even if we already had Klubnik.....not even with Watson, Lawrence, or Boyd.

I think I may have done exactly what they did... short field. Is your QB better than our D?

first down see if they score... they did not.
second down see if they score .... they did not.
third down see if they score .... they did not.
fourth down see if they score .... they did not.

Did you read or hear the post game with Makuba? He said they were ready for that situation they had practiced it all week... and they were.
