Hypothetical: after going 16-15 in the 2014-2015 season

Jan 29, 2022, 9:00 PM

Had we fired Brownell, and hired Rick Barnes at the exact same time as Tennessee did in the 2015 offseason, where would our program be today? What kind of years would we have had during that time to the present compared to what we did have? I know my thoughts, curious others.

Ask yourself, why would Rick Barnes come back to Clemson? Easy answer, he wouldn't.

Return of the Mac?

Jan 29, 2022, 9:40 PM

Yeaaaaaah I highly doubt Rick B. would have strongly considered our offer - unless there were limited unattractive options.

Like, Tennessee actually has a decent basketball history (both men's and women's) especially if you line it up next to Clemson men's bball history.

In a what if world tho....I could see Rick B being a step up but, it wouldn't be like going from Tommy Bowden success to what Dabo built.

I mean, RB went 74-48 OVR with a 28-36 ACC Conference record in his stint here.

3 straight NCAA tourneys:
-1 Sweet 16 appearance
-2 first round losses
---- also, 1 NIT appearance.

Not bad for a 4-year run but the dude left almost OP style (rumors say distractions outside of marriage led to leaving).

Overall, I would say he'd probably have a better record than most BB teams -- maybe swap the NIT appearances for NCAA appearances.

We're also talking about times when the transfer portal was warming up, so not sure how much better we would have done there.

Maybe Rick B could have built something here if he would've stuck it out (or out of alleged trouble).

Would him staying have led us to Dabo heights in Men's BB? That would be an interesting "what if" scenario.

Good thoughts, tend to agree. He had us ranked in the top 5 during his first stint at one point, I don’t see why we wouldn’t be a constant to 15-25 team, second round to elite 8 consistently. Not winning final 4s, but a consistent, Xavier/Cincinnati like program, or better. Remember his success here the first time was when the football program was down, I have to think it would be easier for him during this “era”.

Two things I do not believe in; Moral victories and Hypotheticals!

At this point, there shouldn't be any conversations about BB. Same ole, same ole.
