Hypocrites about admissions? Best is standard?

Feb 12, 2018, 11:08 PM

How many on here have criticized Dabo for bringing in kids of old tiger greats or his friends? TONS OF YOU. How many harped about BEST IS STANDARD? Well it might hurt a little but maybe your little snowflake isn't the best student available. You're supposed to be the adult here so get over it and help guide your child. This is their big first step and letting them (or even worse YOU) get their feelings hurt and make a bad decision is foolish.

Bridge seems to be a great deal "Bridge students will reside in Lightsey Bridge I, Lightsey Bridge II, or Calhoun Courts ON CAMPUS at Clemson . These residential communities feature 4-person apartments which are fully furnished." Honestly sometimes I wish I had done it to knock out some of the tougher classes for less money. They will be ON CAMPUS in better dorms than most/all Clemson kids. I was in the high-rises and they are crap asbestos towers. Nobody there will care if your kid is going to a Clemson Calculus class or a Bridge Calculus class. Chances are you can't do Calc yourself so you shouldn't care either. My cousin was in the bridge program while I was at Clemson and he had no problems finishing with a Clemson degree like me.

We criticize USC for letting anyone with a GED in but then get pissed when Clemson's standards are too high... Wake up! They've always been high.

And if you're scared of them "missing" freshman year keep in mind they are still in classes with people trying to get into Clemson. Nobody meets ALL of their friends freshman year. Your kid will be ok even if he needs to make more friends as a Sophomore. It might even be better for them to have something putting pressure on them freshman year to keep grades up and not be a slacker like me.

I wish Clemson had a more holistic review and not just test scores. We all know well rounded students are the most successful. If I want book smarts, it’s the Chinese all day long. The reason we are the best country is creativity & leadership, not test scores. I work with people all over the world and I know this firsthand.

I got in in 2006 and had no extracurricular. Raised by a single mom with 2 kids. No time for band or scouts or volunteer work. Clemson is there to educate kids not take them on scouting trips.

4.35 GPA
1290 SAT
I did have a completer program for both Engineering and Art from highschool which few offered at the time. 4 classes related to engineering and 4 for art.

I got into the architecture program which was supposedly the hardest to get into and transferred out to get my civil engineering degree.

It will work out in the end. If we're being honest we know that A LOT of students take 5-6 year to graduate so they will still likely be a Clemson student for 4 years too.

How in the world do our football players get admitted? Let’s be honest. A lot of them have no where near the test scores that some say it takes for Clemson. 1400+? How many of our player scored this high?

and minimum scores/core curriculum, etc....BUT....Clemson athletes do undergo a compliance review to determine if they'll be able to be successful academically.

I think Clemson should take the best students from SC first. They are much more likely to return the investment to South Carolina, rather than take it elsewhere.

Best is standard., best South Carolinians educated in their state university.

Feb 12, 2018, 11:27 PM [ in reply to Re: Hypocrites about admissions? Best is standard? ]

If they took more SC students they wouldn't have as much revenue as OOS students pay A LOT more.

That leaves you with two choices
*pay more for tuition (which is already stupid high)
*pay more taxes

If the politicians YOU YOU YOU YOU vote for are NOT funding college then they have to get money from somewhere. Pretty simple.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Hypocrites about admissions? Best is standard?

Feb 13, 2018, 7:02 AM

No, they wouldn't have to raise tuition. They would just need to get off the "lets build a new building every few years" kick. They also could eliminate a number of admin overhead. Over the last decade plus Universities have been able to raise tuition without any free market pressure. "Want to raise tuition? No problem, the gov will increase the loan to students." There has been nothing to keep pressure on schools to keep costs in check. So another income source are OOS students. Clemsons not unique, its a problem across the bored.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

you’re wrong on both points.

Feb 13, 2018, 7:44 AM

Clemson is already one of the efficient universities in the US and has the figures to back it up.
Facilities drive everything related to quality at the university level. The best professors and students want the best facilities to live and work in. Our neighbors in NC and GA get billions from their state legislators facilities. Higher education in SC is a very low priority.

Tigernet Posters:

Many on site need to be aware of one cost situation for publically funded institutions in S.C. Student costs continue to rise because the General Assembly has drastically cost operating funds since 2000.

Midlands Tech as an example received forty percent of our budget from state funding the year I starting teaching. This fiscal year we received seven percent!

Every in-state institution from Clemson to the technical colleges have experienced substantial declines in operating funds. Those differences have to be made up from other sources if schools want to survive. If you do not like reading this then go to the legislature and complain. Compared to our neighbors we do a disservice to higher education and the needs of our state.

Go Tigers!

Re: Hypocrites about admissions? Best is standard?

Feb 13, 2018, 8:27 AM [ in reply to Re: Hypocrites about admissions? Best is standard? ]

This is way oversimplified and not correct. The real reason for the increase in tuition is that it's not valued by Americans as it once was. The state governments have dis-invested. You want to complain about Clemson recruiting out of state kids? Well, that's where the money is now since it's not coming from the state. The states are funding higher education today at about the same amount they did in the 1970s. I don't know if you've heard of inflation, but that price difference has to go somewhere.

Don't get me wrong, I can argue both ways for the pros and cons of administrative/ student affairs personnel all day, but the truth of the matter is it's a lack of state/federal subsidy today driven by a society that doesn't value higher education like it once did.

Actually, students are more likely to build careers in the state where they go to school. All the data the past twenty years that I've done college recruiting shows that.

I appreciate your thinking, but that would be like the football team not taking the best players nationwide. And then that leads us down the road, well the football team is "different" which leads us back to the charter of an academic institution. We want our cake ...and to eat it too.

Re: Hypocrites about admissions? Best is standard?

Feb 12, 2018, 11:35 PM

Here is the problem with the Bridge program.... My daughter is a graduate of Clemson. She was not a part of Bridge. My dad is a graduate of Clemson and former baseball player back in the 40's. We have family ties going way back.

I will make this as short as possible. Bridge is a way to tell students that they are enrolled at Clemson while attending Tri-County Tech but paying Clemson prices. That is pretty much the Bridge program. If you go through Bridge, you will be automatically accepted at the end of the Bridge program to finish your degree.

If you complete Tri-County Tech in their transfer program you will be accepted into Clemson. So what would make a person pay Clemson prices to basically attend Tri-County Tech?

The Bridge program is a way to cut down on the complaints of SC residents not getting into Clemson, while of out of state students and foreign students do get in. The school can legally tell them they are "Clemson" students. I can tell you for a FACT of students who have the grades, the SAT scores, ACT scores that are higher than out of state students but they get put in the Bridge program.

There will come a day, not sure when, but someone will take Clemson to court over Clemson's Charter. In Clemson's Charter it is clearly spelled out that Clemson University was built and formed to serve the the rural kids of South Carolina. There are a lot of rural kids who are not getting into Clemson. I am as die hard a Clemson fan and am a part of the Clemson family as much as anyone. I don't think any out of state student or foreign student should be placed ahead of any student from SC who has the grades to get in.

I have had some highly respected business leaders and professionals who went to Clemson many years ago, some when it was Clemson A&M College and then Clemson University. They have achieved a high level of success. They have told me that they would never be allowed to get into Clemson based on today's standards.

I am not talking about letting every Tom, #### and Harry in who wants in that clearly will never make passing grades, but there are some great young people in this state who are not getting into Clemson based on tests scores that really doesn't show what a person can do.

Clemson should put its focus back on the kids from SC as it clearly states in our charter. I know it looks great to say we are a top 20 school by some organization, but we are doing a great disservice to the state and its young people.

This is spot on. My son is finishing the bridge this spring..... Doing very well. When he went in the fall to meet with his advisor, he was asked why he did not get into Clemson with his credentials... Went to largest high school in SC, bringing 21 AP credits with him. Legacy going back to 1906......but, I notice it is all legacies going to bridge; they have us on the hook.
My daughter just got accepted into the bridge, but she is accepting a swim scholarship elsewhere.

Q:What's the foreign country that sends the most students to

Feb 13, 2018, 12:20 AM

Clemson? A: New Jersey.

In 1978 when Clemson played Ohio State in the Gator Bowl, the local Jacksonville paper
did a couple of interviews with the then presidents at that time of the two schools.

The president of Ohio State said their policy was that if you graduated from high school in Ohio, they would accept you. Didn't matter if you got straight D's in high school, if you graduated, they had a spot for you.

The president of Clemson, said that if you wanted to get in Clemson, you'd better be in the top 10% of your high school graduating class. That Clemson is an institution of higher learning. "We're not going to waste time having to teach you how to read, write and do arithmetic in a remedial classroom.

My older brother was the first student in the state of South Carolina in the mid-60s to score an 800 on the math portion on the SAT. He was accepted at MIT, but he choose to go through the honors program at Clemson instead, from where he graduated with a BS and a PhD.

It's been amazing over the years to see how much Clemson's enrollment has grown. In 1965, the enrollment at Clemson was about 5,600 students. It's now over 20,000 students.
