Hope Dabo tones down the hyping of 3 year Clemson degrees

Mar 31, 2018, 9:06 PM

I have to be honest, even w/ summer school, is it really possible to get a quality education in 3 years? Possible, I suspect, but not easy. It took my full 7 semesters (3.5 years) - no summer sessions as I had to work to earn tuition - for my 139 semester hours in Electrical Engineering. I am proud of that, gave me a full 40 year career out of it - but I question so many football players getting a degree in just 3 years.

Jadar and CJ Fuller examples tarnish our University's name and everything associated with it. I think Dabo has made no statement, correct?

Fuller and Johnson haven’t tarnished Clemson’s name.

I hope your post was an attempt at humor. If not, you are being way too dramatic.

It's really burgundy, but you like to call it garnet. But let's be honest here, you can't get a quality education at the University of SuCk no matter how many years you are there, coot.

Re: Hope Dabo tones down the hyping of 3 year Clemson degrees

Mar 31, 2018, 9:29 PM

most majors now require around 120 hours. i had to have 130-135, in that neighborhood. that's around a semester less right there. a lot of kids come in with college credit now, too. that didn't happen in my day. with all kinds of mini semesters, summer school 1 and 2, internet courses... 3.5 years is very possible.

badge-donor-20yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

i think i needed 132. if we are down to 120, what happened?

Mar 31, 2018, 10:12 PM

But regardless, 120 over three years is 20 per semester plus full time football. How does that happen? No way a person can do that under normal conditions.

Apr 1, 2018, 2:38 AM [ in reply to Re: Hope Dabo tones down the hyping of 3 year Clemson degrees ]

So when did Universities drop to 120 hrs for degrees..
My degree was about 135 hrs in '79.
Even here in Texas, I hear students saying the same thing.. about 120 hrs for the schools in this region.
GO TIGERS!!!

Mar 31, 2018, 9:31 PM

after ranking, Clemson remains far ahead of usuck academically.... Clemson's reputation certainly isn't taking any hits from poorly educated chickentrolls who cling to the skirts of their women's basketball team for the tiniest amount of validation...... safe to say in a lot of academic and sports conversations, usuck is the jokebutt

dontcha think? I mean we can provide links to all kinds of places that'll verify those academic rankings....but, whats the point?? everyone already knows the truth

seems like an awfully lot. Would like to hear this explained a bit before I buy into the narrative,

2024 white level memberbadge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Almost all football players

Mar 31, 2018, 10:43 PM

go to two sessions of summer school and start no later than the second summer session before their first fall semester. If they are early enrollees, they get an extra spring and two summer sessions before their first fall semester.

So 12 hours in the summer and average 15 hours per fall and spring semester and you get to 120 hours in 3 years.

badge-donor-20yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

null

Let me explain it to you.

Apr 1, 2018, 12:29 AM [ in reply to 40+ hours per year, on top of a full time football job ]

If someone had all your money and the only way to get it back was to go and take it from them would you go take it?

That's how I dealt with the challenges of working full time while attending Clemson. From my perspective the university had my effin' education and I went and took what belonged to me. I paid for it and they couldn't keep it because it was mine.

If you're a pooseyaszed little mama's boy who still gets his milk from the teat this probably won't work for you. I use you as meaning any 'pooseyaszed little mama's boys,' not you specifically.

I doubt the PALMB last long in Dabo's camp.

First of all, I am not a "coot", I have a bachelor's in ECE with gpa of 3.84 and a master's with gpa of 4.0.

Obsession to call each poster one disagrees with a "coot" is borderline sickening, hope people will seek professional help.

I believe Dabo is a great coach and best fit for us with genuine caring for his players and for Clemson. There is no greater fan than me. But Clemson is not a cult (perhaps as USC may be), open discussion should be welcome.

My point is that in hyping 3 year degrees and character of his players we set ourselves for great disappointment and criticism when something like recent incident happens. One (or two) bad apples don't spoil the basket, and even now i hope for these young men that there is some other explanation.

Mar 31, 2018, 11:07 PM

I'm so glad you posted this... you are exactly right. What these 2 kids did completely proves Dabo wrong in the culture he is turning Clemson into.

I mean Deshaun, Artavis, Williams, Gallman, etc... they are all terrible people who don't represent Clemson. Worse than them is RRM3, Sammy, Cain (who didn't learn any life lessons at Clemson)... those guys left after 3 years without a degree and shouldn't represent "us".

I could keep the list going of great kids Dabo has recruited and continues to recruit that should make you proud to be a fan and/or alumni but I guess this one isolated incident has proven me wrong. Oh well maybe we should fire Dabo and hire Saban, Fisher, or probably your favorite Champ since they are such model coaches.

Apr 1, 2018, 7:07 AM [ in reply to Tiger fans unable to stand any introspection... ]

Out of all the posters on your thread who have called you a coot you decide to respond to someone who did not call you a coot but has a screen name and an icon meant to provoke trolls. Hmmmm.

The so called “hyping” of three year degrees has nothing to do with Jadar and CJ or what they did. Keep in mind that they are both former players and are no longer in the football program. Dabo runs a tight ship. When players mess up they are disciplined. Unlike a lot of other schools our players actually miss playing time or are dismissed from the team. He doesn’t care if your name is Sammy Watkins. If a player gets in trouble then that player will sit. Every Clemson player and fan who has followed this program knows this and it sets an example for others who might think about doing something they may regret. Dabo can’t be with these guys all the time and control their lives much less can he do anything about former players getting into trouble. Anybody who cares to be realistic about the situation knows this.

I send my apologies to you IF your post is not a lame attempt to troll but I completely disagree with your attempt to connect CJ and Jadar with three year degrees. I’ve had a poster on here call me a coot before. Let it roll off of you. This is an sports message board on the internet full of anonymous posters. I wouldn’t take very much of what goes on in a forum like this seriously. I come in here to talk sports and have a little fun. Nothing I said to you or any other person that I suspect of trolling is meant to be taken personal. One thing I do not like is for people to pretend to be something they are not in order to troll this board. People who do it need to find something better to do with their time. If you’re in that category then I would encourage you to do something more constructive. Have a good day.

I started the tread to vent frustrations at Jadar and CJ incident and how (just like Monte's "We eat stress..." comment) too much bragging can backfire.

Anyway, the board is mostly dominated by Cult like following of Clemson football where no introspection or worries can be shared. Re: Hope Dabo tones down the hyping of 3 year Clemson degrees

Mar 31, 2018, 10:11 PM

During WW2 the Army had the Army Specialized Training Program (ASTP), a program designed to provide the Army with various disciplines, among them, engineering. The course granted a Bachelor's degree in 18 months. I was in the program at Carnegie Tech and we had to work our tails off. The program was abandoned, not because it was a failure, but because the Army needed immediately the men who were in the program. I can assure you there were no short cuts. Now, it's difficult to compare that highly compacted schedule with the current university schedule but it's quite possible to earn a degree in three years, even in what some would consider the most difficult disciplines. But it all depends on the student.

badge-ringofhonor-joe21.jpgmilitary_donation.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I was only at Clemson 3 years.

Apr 1, 2018, 12:23 AM

I spent a quarter at G'ville Tech proving I could do college level work then transferred to Clemson. They wouldn't allow transfers from outside the university to The College of Art and Architecture so I enrolled and wasted a semester in Engineering then transfered to A and A. That pretty much blew the 12 hours I got from Gville Tech.

So yeah, 3 years was enough for me to get a degree in Building Science and Construction Management. Maybe it just wasn't enough for you and you think everyone else is a PALMB* too.

See my previous post in this thread for definition of PALMB

it's not uncommon for a lot of students to arrive at Clemson (or any college for that matter) having already earned quite a few college credits while in high school. This is the primary reason you see/hear of so may students being able to graduate in three years.

Thank you BigCUFan, you seem to be the first one to take into account how accelerated most K-12 programs have become. With computer classes in kindergarten, learning about the Holocaust in 3rd grade, and algebra by 4th grade, our kids are tearing through most subjects at almost light speed. They are expected to take 9th grade English and Algebra and 10th grade Spanish during middle school, so they'll be ready for AP classes by 9th grade and dual credit classes by their junior year. Many kids are academic sophomores they day they move into the freshman dorms. When you consider athletes have tutors and summer classes to keep them on track, on-time or early graduation is a realistic expectation these days.
