How would you help DJU improve?

Oct 31, 2021, 9:29 AM

I agree with RGIII that yesterday we saw good and bad from QB DJU... mostly bad

To make anything out of this season, Dabo and team have to get DJU to a B minus QB grade at least.

So how would you help DJU?

One huge help would be an OL that could consistently give him some time to make plays while not running for his life or worrying about getting sacked every time he drops back. One that could really make the run game be a factor to be respected. That would be a huge help. Now, I’ve been terribly disappointed with DJ this year, but he is not the entire problem. JMO

The fact that you say he's running for his life makes me think you haven't watched a single game. Dude's a statue (I can count the number of plays where he tried to scramble and use movement in the pocket to extend the play this season on one hand), holds onto the ball too long, and stares at his first receiver (since he doesn't make checkdowns), telling everyone exactly what he's going to do.

The last 2-3 games especially vs FSU the O-line has played decent. Several times DJ stood in the pocket too long when he had plenty of time to make a play.
Right now the main problem is DJ .

Re: How would you help DJU improve?

Oct 31, 2021, 9:37 AM

That is hard. There is allot.

1. I think he is overthinking things and not going through his progressions.

2. Somehow work on touch. The pass to the open TE yesterday is an example. Loft that up instead of throwing the heater and it is a big gainer.

3. Call plays that fit his skill set quick hitters etc.

4. Run more tempo for him to get him into rhythm.

military_donation.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I agree with you but I think you have them out of order…

Oct 31, 2021, 9:47 AM

I think if you do #3 the #1 and #4 get taken care of. Give DJ a scheme that fits his skill set and I think he grows into a really good QB. To do that I think Dabo has to make a staff change.

#2 definitely needs to happen. But again that needs a staff change.

In short I think the only way to help DJ is either replacing the offensive staff at Clemson or transfer portal.

Oct 31, 2021, 9:45 AM

He's not as good as we thought for starters, absolutely no mobility other than running him as a battering ram, but he seems to be scared of contact. Probably really good in practice but can't handle game pressure. Locking on receivers, never going thru progressions, no touch whatsoever, those are practice and mental issues - not easily dislodged. We will be average at best, but if he was average we would be 7-1.

Re: How would you help DJU improve?

Oct 31, 2021, 9:46 AM

If you are asking me as a coach, I will refer you to the Coach.
If you are asking me as an armchair quarterback I would tell you I have never thrown a pass in my life more than 30 yards.
BUT if you are asking me as a guy who watches college football every chance I get I would recommend some of the following;
1)Take some snaps under center(if our OC. knows what that is).
2)Take more than a 2 step drop. Seems often the pocket is collapsing around him as he steps up to deliver the ball.
3)Have "happy feet. "He always seems to throw flat footed.
4)Roll out more and to the right. Would give him a better view of the whole field ,and might help him with his progressions.
5)Take some sting off the ball. At times I don't even think Hunter Renfrow could catch some of those throws( and how often did he drop a pass).
And finally if all else fails hand the ball off to one of our gifted running backs.
P.S. Quit throwing those stupid Rob Spence bubble screens. But that is not his fault entirely because we got no body blocking on the perimeter.

Re: How would you help DJU improve?

Oct 31, 2021, 10:18 AM

DJ’s biggest problem is his feet. Watch the majority of QB’s in the pocket. Especially the good ones. They are always bouncing in the pocket. It’s not a shuffle and it’s not a jump but you are constantly using your frame and stance to keep your body both loaded and athletic to either evade the rush or make a throw. DJ stands still in the pocket this creates two issues. If he has to throw to a target that he isn’t facing while standing still he has to overcompensate with his upper body and his arm causing the pass to be inaccurate or thrown entirely to hard. If the rush starts to get home he isn’t prepared to evade. If this problem got fixed I believe you would immediately see an improvement in DJ.

2. Explain to him that if a receiver is behind the DB, lead him and let the receiver go get the ball. That is not the time for a 50/50, back shoulder throw asking the receiver to stop and turn back into coverage.

Go to more of a run, play action game. Work with him on going thru his progressions. And try to loosen him up somehow. He's playing really tight so the game is fast for him. He has to get to a more relaxed frame of mind.

Re: How would you help DJU improve?

Oct 31, 2021, 11:55 AM

Send him to Duke to get some training as a QB. Look at Chase Brice improving this year.

Clemson hasn't had a high caliber QB coach, it's recruited high caliber QBs that were nearly 'there' so Streeter simply had to keep up with them to appear competent. DJ came in as a rough talent compared to Clemson's last 3 QBs. He was rated a 5-star but hasn't materialized as more than a 2 star during game time.

Streeter needs to immediately be moved back to recruiter coach and replaced with someone with some guts to tell DJ to shut up, drop the 'Cinco' nomiker, and take off the concrete shoes.

DJ apparently is fine when not under real game time pressure during practices... so maybe Venebles needs to be in on the practice and heat it up against DJ so his actual pressure QB traits show up.

Send DJ to a #### ballet class to learn to be light on his feet... he looks like he moves in concrete shoes or in 2 feet of mud.

Eliminate any screen pass so that any throw he's forced to look for receivers down field.

Perhaps practice games of reverse whack-a-mole where he has to throw to pop-up receivers in practice.

Force him to throw consistent passes by putting a speed trap on the ball velocity and slow speed camera on ball dynamics. He has to make 100 consistent passes for each zone across the field before he can play again.

There's a ton of things DJ needs and isn't getting from Streeter if game time performance is any indication. This is Dabo's job to straighten out Streeter and DJ on responsibilities.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: How would you help DJU improve?

Oct 31, 2021, 2:30 PM

I'm glad you point out Streeter being an issue. Our QBs seems to stagnate or regress under him. Chase, Hunter, and Zerrick all got better once they left Clemson. Trevor's passing regressed each year (he became a much better football player though). I'd even say Kelly Bryant improved his passing slightly once he went to Missouri. The only QB who didn't regress was Deshaun, but he hired a private coach. It just baffles me that we hired the worst QB in Clemson history statistically to coach our quarterbacks. I just can't understand that logic.

Oct 31, 2021, 12:29 PM

In practice I would set up scenarios where there are at least three receivers down field, and one of them is clearly open (have the DB play off). It may be the primary receiver (usually Ross, he seems to be DJ’s favorite go to guy), or it may be someone else. MAKE HIM READ THE FIELD. Start by having the DL / blitz pressure fairly low so he has time to look, then ramp up the pressure as DJ shows some, ANY ability to read the field and find the open guy. Because there have been plenty of times when the OL gave him time to throw and he still locked in on the primary receiver.

STREETER, EARN YOUR PAY. TEACH HIM HOW TO READ THE FIELD, WHEN TO SCRAMBLE, AND HOW TO RUN THE BALL WITHOUT RUNNING STRAIGHT INTO THE BACK OF THE NEAREST O LINEMAN!!!!

2024 white level member flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: How would you help DJU improve?

Oct 31, 2021, 12:35 PM

I think OL getting much better is the thing. DJ is slow with reads and needs time to survey the field. I don’t think he will ever be a zone read QB. That takes split second decision making and he does not seem to be able to do that. There is no way to fix this now. It’s just tweak and grind and hope for a better option next year.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: How would you help DJU improve?

Oct 31, 2021, 12:41 PM

He needs to learn tempo on his passes.. We know he has a strong arm. If he throws the ball when he is suppose to he doesn't have to throw a 95mph fastball to get it there. That all comes from his QB coach. We need someone that can develop him. He also needs to lose about 20 lbs. He is a brick house but a slow one. This offense needs a QB that can take the ball down and run if all else fails. Granted yes the OL is a problem, but there are times where he can just take off and run and pick up 3-5 yards and he rather throw the ball away. Pick up those yards it helps keep the offense on pace. It is a lot easier to go from 2nd and 10 to 3rd and 5 than going to 3rd and 10 and hope that someone gets open. Gotta keep the offense ahead of the sticks by any means necessary. This also comes down to play calling. We have to be less predictable. If we as fans can call the plays before they happen and we aren't watching film and learning tendencies what do you think the coaches that are paid to do it know.

Re: How would you help DJU improve?

Oct 31, 2021, 2:16 PM

Call passing plays with a diverse route tree. We actually called and completed a slant pass yesterday. I was ecstatic. I don't remember many others this entire year. Also, how many passes did FSU complete 7 yards down the middle of the field in front of our LB's yesterday? We haven't ran that route all year. No crossing patterns, no drags across the field. Those are all easy throws. Everything is to the outside. Leading our receivers out of bounds. Except for that bubble screen that is good for -4 to +4 yards depending on a WR block. Watch other teams who pass the ball well. Receivers catch the ball in stride across the middle of the field and then get yards after the catch. The only way our receivers get YAC is if they break a tackle. I am giving the receivers we have the benefit of the doubt that they can run a route and gain separation - but how many times have you seen that this year? Is it because they run the same out routes over and over? Why don't we run any plays with our receivers bunched? I think the play calling leaves a lot to be desired. And if the play calling assumes DJ can't throw the ball across the middle of the field - shame on TE. At least give the kid more options for easy completions as mentioned above or even a jet sweep type "throw".

He and one of his receivers would run plays with the receiver running crossing routes. Down and in, down and in, down and in and no early passing, the receiver would have to be running sideline to sideline.

He would do that until he knew exactly how much to lead that receiver on a down and in route. Rinse and repeat with anyone else who expected to catch a pass on this team. When he had them all down pat he would then run routes with two prospective receivers and practice checking from one to the other. It might take the entire season and perhaps even the spring and summer but when I got done with him and our receivers they would know what the other guy is thinking.

What scares me the most about his long-term development is his lack of ability to read a defense, and move through progressions. I think an appropriate first place to start would be changing his expectation that every route needs a 95 MPH fastball thrown.
