3 weeks before Fall semester started. I was on waiting list for Clemson and heading to Bama because they accepted me, but last second my Mom called admissions and asked if there was a chance I could attend Clemson. They said we have an opening and I went. That's that. I had never seen Clemson or even been in the area. I went sight unseen, because my neighbor in California was a Clemson fan and hyped it up. They were originally from Union.

Like I have said before, grew up a NC State fan as Dad was a grad. Basketball household for sure! But living in SC and going to school for an engineering degree, out of state tuition made no sense. Decided on Clemson, and have been in love with it since the freshman orientation weekend the summer before school started!

same thing but reversed. NC State was really good for our family and I couldn't be happier with their education.

I was 8. The year was 1969.

I had been a Clemson fan for years. I lived in West Columbia, but it appeared that of my friends and family (which were split between Clemson and the coots), the cool ones seemed to cheer for Clemson.

Frank Howard had just announced his retirement, and I couldn't understand why he and everyone else seemed sad. The guy didn't have to work anymore.

One of my family friends explained that I had to visit Clemson to understand why he was sad.

That was the moment I decided to commit to Clemson.

31. Born and raised a Gamecock. Married into a Clemson Family. I converted at the "Catch" game at Willie Brice. The trash fans were downright nasty to my wife and I had to literally fight my way out of there. I was in Garnet and she was in Orange. I went home and burned all of my Gamecock gear and never looked back. We have been members of IPTAY over 50 years!

Great Story! I am 33 now and I got to meet Frank Howard a few times when I was small through family members. Did not know much about him back then besides he talked funny and told some of the funniest stories and jokes. Wish I could have been born earlier and got to know him better.

I was a high school dropout living on my own and washing dishes for minimum wage at a Quinceys in Greenville. I saw no path to a degree at Clemson. I started with GED school at Greenville Tech. It took me 10 years to get BS and MS in engineering from Clemson. After my first year with a tech degree I realized that I was much advanced as a student compared to my peers and started to take college transfer courses. I worked in a chemical plant on Donaldson Center the entire time at Greenville Tech and for a year in between tech and Clemson to save money. I worked there during breaks when I was at Clemson and also worked side construction jobs.

I worked the entire time and was really poor compared to most students. I lived about 3 miles from campus and had no car no phone. My trailer rent was $125 a month and my only other bill was electricity. It was really hard compared to by 30 plus year career afterwards. I've never been unemployed since before 16 years old and never will be until retirement. I lose my job tomorrow and tomorrow becomes retirement day.

First game attended was about 60 years ago, first Bowl game attended was the Gator Bowl against Pitt in 1977 and attended the National Championship game in Miami in 1981. In other words, a life long commitment. Go Tigers!

Re: How old were you when you decided to commit to Clemson?

In the fall of 1967, Clemson invited me for a weekend visit my senior year in high school. A friend from my high school was also invited and we drove up and roomed together for the weekend. The campus was well decorated for the homecoming game with Maryland. Everything about the visit went well and I knew I could go to Clemson, fit in and probably probably enjoy myself. I had no prior connection to Clemson before my visit. I applied to Clemson, Georgia Tech and NCSU. Another guy I knew was going to visit GT and I rode with him for a weekend in Atlanta. He like GT more than I did; I though it felt closed-in and a small part of a big city which did not appeal to me.

I think it was late January 1968 when I got my letter of acceptance from Clemson and committed quickly. That means I was 17 when I committed to Clemson.

I showed up in Clemson in mid-August of 68, moved into my room in Johnstone and in many ways I've never really left. Oh, eventually I graduated and moved away, but I have been back to school many many times through the years. If I were ever to move away from my current home, I'd want to relocate very close to campus. Clemson was a good fit for me. A great many of my current day friends are Clemson men and women.

This is the first year I have not attended football games at Clemson since 1967 and life seems out of kilter because of that.

Re: How old were you when you decided to commit to Clemson?

I was born in the Anderson Hospital but the house was in Clemson. My father taught Textiles for over 40 years and I grew up as a Tiger and followed the football teams whether they won or lost. I went to all the home games as a middle and high school student. The only time I thought of another school was after my guidance counselor told me if I wanted to major in history I might want to go to the University of South Carolina. I went home and talked with Mom and Dad about this and Dad told me that he would pay for college at Clemson but he would not pay if I went to USC. My mind was made up and I graduated from Clemson in 1967. I have always supported the Tigers and have had season tickets in football when I lived in Spartanburg and after 2004 when Mother passed away. Other than the time I lived in Texas, I used her tickets to go the the home games. We went to all the bowl games in Florida including the 1981 National Championship game against Nebraska. The last Bowl game I went to was the Cotton Bowl in Dallas with my middle son to see us beat Notre Dame. I am going to the home games this year but sitting in the upper deck. My usual tickets are in the lower deck on the Clemson side. I hope we get to fill the stadium next season and I get my usual seats back. Go Tigers and win out the season and the ACC Championship.

When I was born. My Granddad rode a horse over to campus in 1890, I think, and participated in the laying of the cornerstone of Tillman Hall, the first building on campus. From that point on it was ordained that my three older brothers and I would go to Clemson. Personally my decision was confirmed in !938 (9 years old) when my oldest brother started, We drove over to pick him up one Saturday and the football game was still playing and I watched the conclusion through the fence.

Which I did at about 6 or 7 years old.

Here’s from that game.

Rocky, I was at that game with VPI in 1978, and it was expected to be a tough game. Steve Fuller kept the ball on an option on the game's first play and ran 75 yards for a TD. It was a blow out from that point.

About the start of my Junior year in high school. I just turned 16 and my father had transferred from Wright Pat. to CNSYD. My maternal grandfather's family had been here a long time; some from the 1670s. So I had heard of Clemson, but did not know much about the school. Before that, I had leaned toward Miami of Ohio. First time I was on campus was Freshman Orientation in 1969.

Went to community college for one year. Was planning on attending NC State for Animal Science and working for a Veterinarian who was big in IPTAY. He talked me into visiting Clemson and meeting with some of the instructors in Animal Science dept. I knew right then I wanted to go to Clemson, things fell into place and never looked back.

I was committed when I was born. My father attended Clemson and loved the Tigers. We attended the Big Thursday games every year, and from where we lived, those were the only games feasible. I remember listening to games on the radio every Saturday and rooting for the Tigers.

My two brothers and I graduated from Clemson, and none of us seriously considered any other school.

Now, my neighbors here in west Georgia can't understand why I wear orange every day, and a Tiger Paw light burns in an upstairs window every night.

1962, attended only pre-college FB game @ Clemson (7th grade, awed). 1966, HS Jr discovered I could only afford Clemson, since I had to pay ($310/semester, live home, no lunch). First in family to college. Only application/ held my breath. Top 10% CU Grad, Law School, Army JAG, Circuit Prosecutor. Incredible career owed to Clemson for taking me.

Went to games off and on my whole life (also went to UofSC and Furman games regularly) but didn’t really consider going to Clemson until it was time to send out applications. Wanted to go to Furman but couldn’t afford it. Had a friend who was going to Clemson who said I should go there and we could be roommates...so I did.

8th grade. I decided to be an engineer. No way I was going to moUSC, even though I was raised a Carolina fan.
I actually took a Carolina tee shirt to Clemson, and on the 2nd day there had a public burning in the courtyard outside Johnstone D-4.

Got to Clemson and within 3 weeks as a Freshman, my parents business had a major problem and it looked like one semester was it. As providence had it, a US Army Captain and ROTC instructor had gotten my name and wanted to talk to me about joining. 4 years later with my education fully paid for by Uncle Sam, I had a Clemson Degree and was headed to active duty. Still to this day thank the whole Clemson Army ROTC staff for offering me a chance to earn an education and blow up lots of stuff along the way. GO TIGERS!

I moved to SC as a kid 8yrs old, my father just got out the military. Moved to Moncks Corner from Fairbanks Alaska. I liked sports, played soccer and hockey in AK but we didn't have football. When got to SC at 8yrs old, I quickly learned that football was "the sport"!

I started playing little league in 1980. I remember thinking all GameCoot fans were arrogant and wore their Polo shirts and Dockside shoes. So Berkeley HS won State Championship in 1981 and Clemson won in 1981, I learned it was a good thing to pull for Clemson. Then add in those arrogant a-holes and the "Black Magic" era and not only did I pull for Clemson but I learned to hate their fans within 4yrs of living in SC with zero ties to Clemson.

I applied to 1 college my senior year and never regretted a minute of my time at Clemson. I only regret not taking in more of what it offered, and I really hated the 'Punt-rooskie' my freshman year.

7th grade. That was during the Red Parker era, so obviously it was the "something in these hills" that capitivated me, since our football tradition was a bit lacking at that time. But we made up for it with that national title my sophomore year!
