Clemson to the SEC

Jul 24, 2021, 11:52 AM

Ok, so we don't know if that will happen, but if it were, I think that FSU makes great sense in the SEC. Historical power, another TV market in FL. However, like the SEC, the B10 has TONS of tradition with OSU and Michigan. Combine that with the fact that the SEC has been the only conference that has stayed true to geographical boundaries, and I think that these teams in addition to FSU make more sense:

NC STATE: They aren't excellent in any one sport but have their decent moments in all. I'd put them in that Mizzu, South Carolina, Tennessee, Kentucky, Arkansas tier of the SEC, BUT they are a more football oriented school than any other in NC. Good fanbase. It would give the SEC a sizable TV market in NC, and joining the SEC would give NC State a much improved ceiling as it would give them a revenue and recruiting advantage over their NC peers.

VIRGINIA TECH: Strong football history, strong fan base and football atmosphere. Another new SEC TV market, makes geographical sense. Give VA Tech a recruiting boost and more revenue. Also gives a recruiting boost in the mid Atlantic for the SEC in the race against the B10.

Thoughts?

Disclaimer: I am not opposed to a ACC expansion/confederacy. ND becomes a must get.....crickets after that on moving the needle. WVU makes geographical sense, and I get this sick in the pit of my stomach feeling that they are about the best the ACC can get for sure at the moment.

GA Tech is another that comes to mind, but I'm not convinced that the Atlanta TV market looks as appealing to the SEC as it would look on the surface. GA Tech does not have anywhere near the fanbase that Georgia does even counting Metro Atlanta.

UNC unfortunately is an option with having a solid football program along with their basketball. There's just something about it that makes me think NC State is a better fit though.

GA tech brings nothing to the SEC..they already have Altanta with UGA.

Unfortunately the ACC brings really nothing for TV markets the SEC already doesn't cover. I mean you could argue UVa, BC and Syracuse bring you the NE, but thats a stretch. So really the only thing a school can bring is a powerful sports program. That list is short

Clemson - obviously
UVa - Basketball and DC eyeballs
Duke or UNC - I'd take UNC due to prowess in football and fairly equal on basketball (plus loads on non revenue generating sports to compete with Pac-12)

Miami and FSU won't be taken. NC State/VaTech/Cuse/Pitt/Ga Tech/BC are screwed.

Agreed on GA Tech. I do think the ACC does bring some new TV markets into play in the south though. North Carolina has no SEC team in it, so taking either NC State or UNC does add considerable market value.

Same scenario goes for Virginia. I think it would be Tech, not UVA because of football and stadium.(UVA HAS A LOUSY ONE) I live in VA and the state is mostly Tech.

In fact, you could argue that they bring more in New TV market than Clemson because the SEC does have a stake in South Carolina's market already with the costs. Clemson and Fsu get taken because they bring the most tradition and muscle on the gridiron plus have the most long term promise in recruiting in my opinion*

Clemson does bring the upstate market which is fairly decent and you are correct with the Raleigh-Durham markets.

But neither are Dallas or DC.

I think the UVa/Va Tech is an interesting one. Can historic success in football help VA Tech along? I mean they haven't been good in a decade and don't appear to be heading in the right direction. And they have zero other sports.

UVA though has a basketball championship and would be a great counter to Kentucky. Plus it has more non-revenue sports success than VA Tech (plus the academics are significantly better) and a better hold in the DC market (as alumni base in DC is higher i believe)

However, i do know the VA legislature is super proactive on it and I doubt they would allow either leave independently. They're probably and all or nothing package.

UNC is a cancer.
The arrogance of Texas without the money. They can join the new Big East and just focus on basketball.
UNC’s incompetent Swofford is the reason the ACC is in such a pathetic position financially. All he cared about was UNC and his own family’s fortunes.

How has SEC stayed true to geographical boundaries?

Mizzou, Ark, Texas A&M?

Actually they have. Texas and Missouri are each considered the western most boundary of the southeastern quarter historically.

And they were all slave states.

So were all northeastern states at one time. That horse has been ridden. For Pete's sake, we can't even talk geographical boundaries in sports without some critical race connotation. We're talking football geographical alignment here, not divvying up what states are going to be slave and free.

I do not understand the 20/30 team mega conference

Jul 24, 2021, 2:11 PM

It becomes its own league - not a conference.
What happens to the other schools?
And don't say you don't care

SEC doesn’t want anyone besides Clemson and FSU I’m sure…

I wouldn’t …

Re: Clemson to the SEC

There is no way either Clemson or Fla. St. would leave the ACC for the SEC. Why would either want to jump into that "buzz saw" of a schedule. Clemson has already shown clearly that an ACC team can win a national championship. Yeah, they would get a little bigger $$ payoff at the end of the season, but neither needs it. Why would either team need more money, when both have facilities second to none. In fact Clemson is looking to spend more money now. The ACC is fine!

I don't believe the SEC would have any interest in any other ACC schools.

You're right about Clemson, but FSU isn't doing well money-wise. They ran a $26 million deficit last year.

The ACC tried with the ACC Network. But gosh almighty, whoever is marketing the TV commercial for the ACC Network should be fired.
