How has Paul Johnson been able to keep a job

At a major conference school like Georgia tech. I know they're a smaller school, but they do have potential to be a competitive football school and have proved so in the past, but I swear I hate watching them play under Johnson. It's like watching a single A high school team. Pathetic!!!

I was fourtunte to attend PJ's coaching clinic while he was HC at Georgia Southern. Dude is a master at the triple option and a great coach. I was also fourtunte to be a student at Georgia Southern while he was the HC there. He's a class act. Period.

which now is the Spread,there's enough talent with 50 miles of the school to field a top 20 team. Can't understand why GT puts up with his outdated system that has athletes from around Atlanta going elsewhere.

and you are running a system that you just can't simply recruit kids too... period.
I don't understand why they stick with him. He's an avg. 7 wins a season guy with occasional outliers both ways.

it is to get into and remain a student at GT. I think all students are required to take Chemistry as a freshman (including the football players). Very difficult academic requirements limits the type of recruits they can sign each year.

Georgia Tech is a VERY hard school to graduate from period, even without football. To play football and manage the rigors of an academic schedule at GT, a lot of kids can't handle that.
It's not like GT recruited THAT well with O'Leary or Gailey either. Sure, they were able to bring in an occasional Calvin Johnson, but they never strung together multiple great recruiting classes or anything. GT is a difficult job.
That said, whoever takes over for Johnson will have a FAR bigger task at hand in trying to convert the current roster devoid of conventional QB and WR talent to a modern offense.

Georgia Tech has a few more students than Clemson and all schools give the same number of scholarships (85).

He has found a way to stay competitive. For some reason GT just wasn't getting all of the big-time athletes from around Atlanta.

He knows how to coach the option and cycle players. PJ earns an average record most years, while earning a good (10 win season) every four years or so because he maintains a good rotation of freshman and seniors.

Tech doesn't support their football program like Clemson and other schools do. Facilities are out of date, etc. It's hard for PJ to get good recruits in that environment, but he does "OK" from year to year. Tech must be satisfied with their return on investment. They can't fire him because nobody else would have the job.

Yes, I've heard facilities are bad. I think the school has lower expectations because they don't have the facilities Clemson and other schools have.

Because they are a bunch of nerds. The best athlete at Georgia Tech is likely a World of Warcraft champion.
The only reason they care about football is so they can shout lame insults at fans of better teams when GT wins a fluke game like FSU in 2015 or us in 2014.

I know where you're coming from but technically since 2005 he's been to 4 ACCCG's and won 2 of them (I guess 1 since NCAA violations took one away).
Not bad for a nerd school.

He's only been there sInce 2008 and only has the one voided championship. He went to the Orange Bowl when FSU made the CFP in 2014. They made the ACC championship in 2012 after UNC and Miami self-imposed post season bans.

Do you seriously want every school to run the same offense? The fact is that teams facing a spread every week have a problem gearing up to stop the triple option which is a totally different animal and requires far more discipline from your linebackers and safeties.PS And even spread offenses have adapted the "quarterback read" which is a triple option play.

As much as well all hate PJ, GT, and laugh at the dinosaur offense, this does bring a unique advantage to the ACC.
Not only did the ACC make the statement that they have been the best conference over the past 3 years, they also also did so with what is arguably the most diverse league of teams when you look at the gameplan each team brings to the table.
Look at the types of offenses in the ACC:
FSU - pro style, air raid
Clemson - Pistol spread, read option. (spread no huddle, with power run schemes mixed in. We have a really unique offensive scheme).
GT - Triple Option
Pitt - Read option
UNC - Spread, no huddle
Miami - Pro style, run first
Boston College - Power run
Louisville - pro style, read option
NC State - pro style, no huddle
Notre Dame - Pistol spread, read option (similar to ours)
Virginia Tech - Spread, no huddle (heavy pass game)
I read an article that graphed the variance of offenses in each conference. The SEC and Big 10 were both exclusively run first leagues with almost every team being heavily biased towards their running backs. The PAC 12 and Big 12 were almost exclusively passing leagues, every team favoring pass first or pass exclusive offenses. All four of the leagues were all over the place in terms of efficiency. The better programs in these leagues (Bama, OSU, OU, USC, etc) were more efficient, the lesser programs werent (Vandy, Wash St. Kansas, Indiana, etc)
The ACC, however, was almost perfectly balanced between pass first, run first, and balanced offensive schemes. Furthermore, almost all ACC offenses ranked high in efficiency, except for Wake.
This is why I think the ACC has been more dominant the past 3 years. We have the most diverse lineup of offensive schemes out of all the conferences, and all of the ACC offenses have been very efficient over that time frame. This gives ACC defenses more regular season "practice" against more, different offensive schemes.
Its harder to win a bowl game or playoff game against an ACC defense that has experienced the triple option, read option, power run, no huddle, pro style, etc. The vast variation in offensive schemes in this league forces our teams to prepare better than other conferences that see homogeneous offensive schemes. We may not have the same NFL talent or recruiting levels as the SEC, but we have dominated our SEC and out of conference rivals in recent years and I think this is one of the reason's why.

His offense is not usually the reason they lose games. Actually it gives them a chance against more talented teams. They aren't going to recruit with Clemson and FSU regardless of what they run. They did fumble twice against Tennessee but also put up 41 points which ought to be enough to win against them anyway. As usual it was defense and kicking that cost them. Now as the HC you can hold him accountable for defense and kicking game for sure, but that offense is the reason they are competing in the first place.
