How good is Cade Klubnik?

Jan 1, 2022, 11:06 AM

Do you see any similarities to other pro/college QBs? I just want to know what we are looking at next year.

Ever hear of DJ Uiagalelei or Hunter Johnson?

Jan 1, 2022, 11:13 AM

He has the same ratings and expectations coming out of high school as they did.

Spot on but....

Jan 1, 2022, 11:41 AM

I think we would be extremely unlucky to bust on two top QBs out of HS in a row. I mean it could happen.

I hope so too, but my point is, our expectations have been

Jan 1, 2022, 11:50 AM

crushed twice already, under almost the exact same circumstances. We can "Yeah, but..." all day long, but high school accolades, championships, film clips, and our own hope and projection doesn't guarantee a good college football player, especially at QB. We KNOW this. Still CK looks great, very very excited to get him here and always hopeful. He sure looks like the real deal.

yeah.we had a couple of busts, but we also had a couple of grand slams in DW and TL,so hope does spring eternal, and only time will tell.should make for a very interesting spring.

Re: Spot on but....

Jan 1, 2022, 12:52 PM [ in reply to Spot on but.... ]

TP was a highly regarded 4 star QB that we were all very happy to get and he looked like he had never played the position before when he got here. That led us to being in the position this season of having perhaps the worst QB in college FB but having no recourse because his backup was noticeably worse. With that in mind, the idea of CK being a bust isn't that far fetched.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Now you guys are scaring me...

Jan 1, 2022, 1:13 PM

I don't have the expectations that CK will be the next QB Heisman winner but the bar is pretty low at this point. I hate it, but it's true.

You must not watch much football if you think DJ is the worst QB in college football. His year was definitely a disappointment by Clemson QB standards but he’s better than a lot of college QBs.

Busted on Zerrick Cooper and Hunter Johnson. Can't

remember if they were same recruiting year.

Jan 1, 2022, 2:22 PM

Zerrick was no bust. Went on to have a good career. There were so many QB’s in the room especially when Trevor showed up and he wanted to play. Zerrick was a year before Hunter. Hunter was a bust no doubt.

Re: Ever hear of DJ Uiagalelei or Hunter Johnson?

Jan 1, 2022, 2:52 PM [ in reply to Ever hear of DJ Uiagalelei or Hunter Johnson? ]

I had concerns about DJ's lack of mobility coming out of high school considering this offense's reliance on the RPO. However, his other issues were unforeseen. I honestly thought that Hunter Johnson was a slam dunk. That one was a surprise.
In Cade's case, he looks like a great fit for this offense with great tools to work with. Hate to say it because I like DJ but it should not take a superstar to jump DJ on the depth chart. Any improvement we see out of DJ next would most likely be marginal at best. It's Cade's job for the taking IMO.

I think DJ has something mentally wrong. Yes he had 2 WR that got drafted into the NFL but even then he still didn’t look the same. I think injuries also hurt his game. He’s not very mobile which is what a QB needs to truly thrive in this offense. Personally I never had high expectations for HJ but I realize he was highly touted. I expected him to be a more of a KB QB that fills in in a pinch but won’t win you the National Championship.

Framewise, he reminds me a little of Johnny Football

Manziel, but I hope and pray he has a better head on his shoulders than Manziel did.

Manziel was a dipstick in HS and everybody in TX knew it. Seriously. Silver spoon kid. Got away with acting like an idiot cuz his daddy had money.

Re: Framewise, he reminds me a little of Johnny Football

Cade seems to be the opposite of Manziel. Watch some of his interviews, also observe how his teammates feel about him. Oh, and he's 6'3.5" tall compared to Manziel's six feet.

39-0 HS record, 3 straight TX 6A State Championships. 7400+Yds for career, 70% completions, 86 TD’s, 7 INT’s. Same school that produced Drew Brees & Nick Foles and he started there as a Sophomore. There are probably 8-10 High Schools in the state of Tx and if you mention that HS to a sports fan, they know exactly what you’re talking about. Westlake is one of those High Schools.

I think he’s good.

To be fair, DJ had a great HS career in probably the toughest HS league in the country.

They literally compare him coming out of high school to deshaun. Same size and build. Cade is just a little faster.

Re: How good is Cade Klubnik?

Jan 1, 2022, 11:36 AM

So maybe you would like to see him at A&M?
Thing is nobody knows how good he will be or can be!
But what irritates me is people looking for similarities to other QB's.
He is his own man, and he will succeed or fail on his own merits and to some degree the type of players our coaching staff recruits for the offense.
An offense is 11 men. But if that offense does not deliver, then what difference does it make?
Oh, and he better have a good defense as well.

season with DJ to wait and see what a QB actually does in games before being sure of anything.

problem with DJ is he raised great expectations after the 2 games he started for TL,so just about everyone thought he couldn't miss.really feel badly for him.

Unlike you and many others here on Tnet, I’m not ready to write off DJ. Have we forgotten how players can improve in this program? Look no further than Mario Goddrich, Cornell Powell, Cle Ferrell, Tyler Shatley, etc as a few examples. By all accounts, the kid has a great attitude and work ethic, and a good skill set. I’m pulling for him and Cade and hope they both improve to their full Tiger potential.

Cade better be everything....

The other option was Quinn Ewers who has already decommitted twice. I’d say we ended up with the best guy. He’s All In and has proven himself on multiple stages. He will need to adjust to college but I expect he will be good. Very.

Re: How good is Cade Klubnik?

Jan 1, 2022, 12:46 PM

We need to get back to the physical Mobil running back QB. Boyd is a good example. He was an excellent physical runner could scramble and create and could throw the ball decently. Our QB needs to be a running threat so defenses have to scheme for them. Homer Jordan made it possible for us to get our first Natty. Alabama and Georgia QBs could both scramble and create and get away from the pass rush. Don’t ever give me a QB that can’t be a part of the running game.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

You can find his game film for free

Jan 1, 2022, 2:26 PM

He’s kinda like Kelly Bryant with a better arm.

He’s a game winner. reminds me of that coot Connor Shaw but with a lot more physical talent.

He knows how to use his legs

Re: You can find his game film for free

So what you’re saying is “he’s got legs, and knows how to use them”.

That makes me uncomfortable. Hopefully it does the same for our opponents.

Re: How good is Cade Klubnik?

Jan 1, 2022, 3:13 PM

I think if Cade has to play next year due to injury or lack of success expect a similar start to DW4s career, next year will have ups and downs like his freshman year, probably injuries too, needs to add a lot of weight, but two years from now I would expect us back on top/playoffs. That’s said, next years schedule is unbelievably manageable, so health and luck could have us winning and improving all year long, maybe hitting our stride late in the year.

Re: How good is Cade Klubnik?

Jan 1, 2022, 3:17 PM

The question is how good does he have to be to beat out DJ.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

No expert, but …

Jan 1, 2022, 3:46 PM

it looks like his passes to the flat sometimes lack enough zip to be really effective. But I know he has pretty good arm strength because you definitely see it at times. I’ve seen him put a lot of zip on crossing routes. That’s something he will need to improve on—using the right amount of velocity on passes.

What appears most impressive are his deep passes. He looks accurate with good touch.

Accuracy on long passes is one thing we’ve lacked this year. Or accuracy in general for that matter.
