DECOOTMENT (MAYBE)

Feb 5, 2018, 4:46 PM

Dutch Fork coach Tom Knotts said Bryce Thompson “will not sign at this point” with South Carolina when the second National Signing Day begins Wednesday.

Knotts wouldn’t answer any more questions about Thompson’s situation on Monday. The receiver/defensive back committed to South Carolina on Dec. 13, but there were questions whether he would qualify for the Gamecocks.

Last week, Thompson said he thought would be able to work through academic issues and hoped to sign Wednesday.

Marshall has been pushing hard for Thompson if he wasn’t able to sign with USC. Members of the Thundering Herd coaching staff, including head coach Doc Holliday went to Thompson’s basketball game Tuesday.

“They (Marshall) are recruiting me pretty hard. But I am still committed to Carolina 100 percent,” Thompson said after his basketball game against Lexington last week. “Marshall has been in the picture just for a backup. If USC doesn’t take me as an academic redshirt, or if it ever came down to that, which I highly doubt, then Marshall would be a good option instead of going to JUCO. That is all Marshall is, a backup plan in case I came short of my grades but I know for sure I am not.

“Coach T-Rob (South Carolina defensive coordinator) said he had a scholarship for the longest time. He kept his word, and I am going to keep mine. I am going to keep my grades up.”

Thompson has been elevated to four-star status by Rivals and 247Sports in their final evaluations for the class of 2018.

During his senior season, Thompson rushed for 1,368 yards, caught 44 passes for 630 yards and 38 total touchdowns in helping the Silver Foxes to their second consecutive title. He also had 27 tackles, an interception and blocked a kick on defense.

Thompson earned Most Outstanding Player honors in the Shrine Bowl after catching seven passes for 165 yards and a TD.

Thompson might not be the only USC commit not to sign Wednesday. Irmo’s Ronnie Jamison, who is at Highland Junior College, might not sign according to his high school coach Reggie Kennedy.

Highland JC coach Aaron Arnold told Phil Kornblut that he knows Jamison wants to go to USC but hasn’t talked to him in a while.

247Sports ranks Jamison as the fifth-best receiver in junior college for class of 2018. He caught 28 passes for 313 yards and four touchdowns this year despite missing three games because of injury. Jamison also averaged 28 yards on nine kickoff returns.

Randy Moss made it in to Marshall, which after seeing his 30 for 30, I'm thinking he an Chad Pennington were def not in the same classes, just saying.

He probably will enroll in the elementary education program there. You repeat grades 1-6 while playing football.

He should have put a little more inferences on getting himself academically ready for college FB. First of all, he failed himself, but his HS football coach and his class room teachers were the adults that dropped the ball and failed the kid also. Every one of them know that these type kids can't get into a D1 college program with D average grades that will allow them to play HS sports!!! Those type of coaches and teachers shouldn't be educators at any level!!! HS athletes are the students that can be pushed to get a good education if they want to play team sports, and his coach and teachers wasted that advantage with this kid.

Re: DECOOTMENT (MAYBE)

I have to disagree with you on the coaches/teachers failing him. I remember in high school (i.e. 4 years ago) the "special" football players had their hands held all 4 years, and now are doing nothing with their lives. Look up Jacob Park, the former UGA flameout QB from the class of 2014. He was the favorite child at my high school all 4 years. It's a shame that most of these athletes go with the mindset that these universities are going to let them go expense free to sit in their dorm until practice/team meetings/whatever. What's worse is that some schools make that dream a reality. It really is the player's fault, and only his fault. If he wanted it bad enough, he wouldn't be in the position he is in. Rant over.

It's his fault to a point, and the point is that he is a KID, and kids don't really have a clue of what's best for them as teenagers. But the coaches and the teachers had that tool called, Make good passing grades or you do not play any sports, and missing out on HS sports assures you that you will never have a chance to play college sports that further assures you that you will never make a dime playing pro sports. The closest you will ever get to the field, is if your minimum wage job will afford you the price of a ticket, or someone likes you enough to buy you a ticket, or you could end up in jail for trying to sneak in that is the same as stealing. Like I said, the educators had the perfect tool that makes those kids study and make good passing grades, grades that will get them in college and play college sports, and they absolutely failed bc they didn't care enough about their kids they don't teach!!! HS student athletes should maintain a high C+ to B average to play HS sports, and no less under any circumstances. 2 hours a day after school studying, and really studying and making good grades isn't to much to ask to play organized team sports for your HS!!! Get these kids hungry for education in HS, and they will thrive in college, and most will graduate college....

A big problem is letting these kids believe that being a pro athlete is the only answer to their problems. I'd love to be getting an education for free. I do agree that GPA requirements for high school athletes are way too lax. High school is a relatively low risk chance to prepare these kids for college because of the support system they (should) get in high school, and you are right, they are dropping the ball.

I agree the school played a role in his underachieving but do not blame the teachers specifically. They have no authority to establish the criteria for being able to participate in athletics. You nor I know how hard they pushed this kid to do his work and excel in their classes.

But in any case...

Go Tigers!!!

Hey you can be a 4 or 5 star on the field, but if you are a 1 star in the classroom you don't play big time ball. In today's classroom teachers give the lessons and it's the students job to take it from there. Sorry that's just the way it is.
