How do hunters with guns fly to NY to hunt

Feb 18, 2013, 10:31 PM

I'm not a hunter but I'm sure hunters fly in NY airports with guns they plan to use while hunting in the state of NY. Are hunting guns viewed differently than hand guns in NY?

That is a very good question, and one I can't find an answer

1) The Guns aren't loaded.
2) The Guns are not in the possession of the person.
3) The Guns and Ammo do not travel together.
4) The Gun is checked in a specific case.

According to NY most of you examples don't cut he mustard up here.
Loaded up there means being ammo being accessible to the prison carrying the gun even if its not in the gun.
Carrying case does not work either. This according to Suzi

He didn't say that.

apparently Daquan had it in a CARRY ON bag. Checked gags are given to the ticket counter and he would have declare the contents. It goes from there to the bag room. The next time he would see that bag was in LaGuardia on the carousel.

Yes, hand guns and rifles have different regulations. As do NYC and NY state.

and bear, too. too short of hunting seasons to effectively keep the #'s down, without their natural predators #'s being where they would need to be, they are over populated for the area.

If you're flying to NY to hunt, you aren't going to Westchester. Maybe the Catskills or Hudson Valley, more than likely the Adirondaks or Western NY. For the most part, your destination would not be NYC.

NY is a huge state, and if you are going to the Catskills, you would probably fly into Albany or Binghamton, if the Hudson Valley, Albany, if the Adirondaks, either Syracuse or Albany, and Western NY you can really fly anywhere, Buffalo, Rochester, Syracuse, Ithaca.

The obvious differences are the long gun vs hand gun, I don't recall any game hunting allowed by handgun, except maybe raccoon. And I don't recall the specific regulations in NY, but if it's like MA, you aren't even supposed to have a handgun on your person in the woods when you are hunting.

The hunting is pretty decent up there, but you're better off flying to Syracuse or Rochester for the salmon runs if you're into an outdoors trip to the Empire State.

eastern pa,or even northwestern n.j.nyc would be a logical starting off point. ny state is a very scenic state once you get outside the nyc area. i loved west point and the surrounding area's especially, never made it up into the catskills or northern ny (in the 4 yrs. i was stationed up near rockaway twp,nj.)
p.s. it's also legal to only use shotguns for hunting in a lot of the areas up there.

Checked gun into Tallahassee Airport in pad-locked case, there underwent inspection of gun by opening case and they put tag in case and one on outside of case showing it was inspected, then pad locked again and sent through to destination in Ithaca, NY by wayof JFK. Shotgun shells had to be in checked baggage in original box and checked though to destination. Baggage could not be locked so it could be inspected. Have had shells confiscated due to not being in original container in South Dakota, but I believe the agent just needed some shells for himself. Came back to Tally from Ithaca through JFK and no problem with gun, only the DU multi-tool including knife, etc that I had in carry-on. It was missed in Ithaca, but found at JFK. Forgot to pack it in luggage. They let me go to the luggage holding area and place it in my luggage, took about 30 minutes to find it, but I wasn't about to give it up if I could help it. They were nice about it!

Guns pistols or long gun can not be in carry on bags
Most of the people I know who are going to fly out of state who want to have a gun when they get to where their going ship their gun UPS and pick it up at a UPS store close to where there going

About twenty years ago I hunted in upstate NY. We shipped

i.e. it is in the cargo. Ammunition also has to be properly boxed.
