How confident are you in Hunter Johnson? Because it could

Sep 6, 2022, 2:16 PM

boil down to just that. If Cade Klubnick is promoted over DJ and DJ quits then having a young, perhaps physically undeveloped true freshman begin taking all the reps and all the hits is going to be risky.

It bit us very soon when Trevor Lawrence was knocked out of the Syracuse game in his first start.

Personally, I feel that Hunter Johnson was about as good an insurance policy as Dabo could have devised.

Should Cade be promoted and DJ quit, I feel pretty good having a guy like Hunter Johnson on the bench.

How about you?

DJ wont quit. I dont think he is that type.

Hunter Johnson - can get us to the ACC Championship Game, not sure if he could win it. But let's hope we dont have to find out.

You can no longer enter the transfer portal during the season. He would essentially have to quit the team and enter the portal later.

Re: How confident are you in Hunter Johnson? Because it could

Sep 6, 2022, 8:32 PM

Is that effective for this season? It’s hard to keep up with the chaos of what is/isn’t allowed anymore.

If he does get bench, he still might make the move to leave (quit) and work with a trainer back home to improve his transfer stock. Might not be a bad move considering he wouldn’t be helping his cause by just sitting the bench here. These are all hypotheticals though.

Our starting QB isn't the answer. I'm amazed at his body size/arm strength and his inability to run or throw. He struggles to even move in the pocket.

Liked what Klubnick brought in his limited time last night. I think Hunter would do fine. It couldn't get worse than the current situation. I say by game 4 we have a different starting QB

Not so sure. I think he would stick it out. And transfer after the season and semester. He still has 2 seasons after this with the COVID year.

I guess it would depend on when he gets demoted

Because you might be needed to step in for injury, you are a team leader, you love it here, etc. Don't get me wrong...I understand your point. But there are certainly reasons to stay if you get demoted. The Bama Tua/Hurts situation is a good example.

If/when CK2 is promoted to starting QB, I don't see DJ5 quiting the team like KB2 did. Now, DJ5 my hit the transfer portal, but I think it will be after the season. Just don't think DJ5 is selfish like KB2 is.

I don't think it's DJ you have to worry about making that decision. There are other very significant influences in his orbit.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: How confident are you in Hunter Johnson? Because it could

Sep 6, 2022, 2:31 PM

If that means his dad, good for him. His dad should be a significant influence in his life.

If it means hangers-on, potential agent wannabes, etc., I would have thought that crowd would have disappeared after last year.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: How confident are you in Hunter Johnson? Because it could

Sep 6, 2022, 2:37 PM

Yes, that meant his dad and you are correct that it's not necessarily a bad thing, but my infinite behind-the-keyboard wisdom makes me guess that it would lead to an immediate transfer back home somewhere.

Re: How confident are you in Hunter Johnson? Because it could

Sep 6, 2022, 2:23 PM

Based off what we've seen from Hunter at NorthWestern and DJ last year and this game I'd say Hunter is at least on par with DJ and possibly a better option bc he can run better. Hunter won't win a natty but he won't be worse than the DJ we saw for the first half last night.

There's also Will Taylor. He's playing as a receiver now, but he was in the QB room last year. There is also the possibility that Klubnik was promised significant playing time and if he doesn't get, he transfers. I think you have to go with who Dabo thinks gives us the best chance to win and then let the chips fall as they may.

2024 white level memberbadge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

If you want championships, then ... yes.

Sep 6, 2022, 5:11 PM

We have 3-4 guys who can play to various degrees.

But, losing your starter to transfer rather than him simply accepting a role as back-up certainly puts you on thin ice.

When Bama went with Tua, Hurts decided to stay the rest of that season. It really helped them. He could have gone the Kelly Bryant route and just quit.

Our QB room is deep, ut we need for our top two guys to stay connected and focused regardless of which one starts at QB in a given game.

Hunter Johnson is with us as an insurance policy. And the other guys were walk-ones for a reason.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: If you want championships, then ... yes.

Sep 6, 2022, 8:19 PM

Hunter Helms was outstanding in HS but against extremely limited competition. That’s why he walked on.

He doesn’t have the size or experience yet to be a guaranteed success, but I have confidence that if he were forced into a game, he’d do great, especially now that he’s a SO.

Streeter would have to go with a shorter playbook in a relief appearance, but he’d be fine.

100% confident. I liked him when he was here the 1st time. With some talent around him; who knows what he could do. He just had a TL16 generational talent ahead of him.

I feel he would do a fine job.

As much as I like DJU the question he would need to ask is: "where else am I going to go where I can be surrounded by talent that doesn't already have a talented QB"? Right now DJU is a "one read QB" and if that one read isn't there "it's like he panics"! Until he learns to throw guys open and throw slightly before a WR is out of their break with anticipation and most importantly looking off defenders he isn't what the NFL is looking for. I would hope in short that he wouldn't leave and would stay and compete for the job if it came down to that.

2024 purple level member flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I do not believe DJ will quit.

Sep 6, 2022, 8:26 PM

I believe DJ already sees the writing on the wall. I'd say the probably he quits is low, very low. Prob .125 or less, just a bit over a 10% chance of him leaving. Unless Dabo advises him or some other team offers him a ton of NIL pay.

Re: DJ is a good man

Sep 7, 2022, 12:15 AM

I tend to agree with you and hope that is the case. I think DJ is a fine young man, it’s also fairly easy to see that Cade will be (if he’s not already) a much better QB. DJ could still play a valuable role and could even end up with an NFL shot without being the starter by his physical makeup alone. DJ might even be a serviceable NFL QB, just not a great fit for the college game especially in an offense that calls for a dual threat guy

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I think he is graduating this Dec.***

DJ won’t quit, I’d be shocked if he quit, I don’t think that’s his make up as a player either.

Dabo has to pull the trigger when he needs to it, regardless with no fear. I believe that’s how Dabo operates too!

Heard it here first (total guess on how it plays out):

1. CK does at some point take over for DJU
2. DJU stays around
3. CK at some point in his run has to miss part of a game
4. DJU comes off the bench with a HUGE performance to keep the title hopes alive
5. CK ends up taking this team to the Natty (win or lose)
6. HJ ends up being Streeter's assistant next year and is our OC in 8 yrs when Streeter moves on

just sayin'
