How Conferences Should Be Set Up

Nov 7, 2018, 9:25 PM

Having conference "divisions" is not very great. I've said it before, but I like the Big 12 deal - which has the least number of teams in the Power 5 - TEN; yet, they play 9 conference games yearly - and now a Big 12 "Champ Game" - AGAIN, after 6 years without one - so on that they're indecisive.

The ACC (14 teams) & 1 other "Power 5" play only 8 conference games (SEC the other?). Anyway, how about ALL FBS conferences play 9 conf. games. N.Dame & other FBS independents must play 9 "Power 5" schools.

I'm totally okay with that plus NO DIVISIONS & then the 2 best teams in each conference playing a "Champ Game" - even if they have a repeat showdown 1 week later (like COULD happen in the Big 12 THIS year w/Okla & W.Vir). That's exciting! "You beat me last week. Can you do it again?"

Go back to 11 reg. season games (drop the powder puffs) & make it: No FBS team can play any FCS teams. Then, expand the CFP from 4 teams to 8! That would still mean the 2 teams left in the Nat. Champ Game would play a max. of 15 games - just like now.

Now THAT'S an exciting race for the FBS Crown & makes every game REALLY count!! Anyone agree?

I agree with scrapping the divisions and letting the two best teams play in the conference champ. game. It would almost be like setting up another round of playoffs. Great idea. Probably too good for TPTB to go for it.

How do FCS teams get money to survive? If the fall what impact does that have on non-P5 and P5 down the road?

Not sure I follow the 2nd part of your question, but about FCS teams surviving, I've run the numbers & IF FBS would agree to donating 1/2% to 1% of annual ticket sales to be split across the FCS, ALL FCS teams would make at least as much as they get paid to play CU or Bama & get clobbered. Typically, they get about $250K - $500K to play in these dumb beatdowns.

Sometimes, the (worst) Group of 5 teams get paid to play Power 5 teams too - some $700K to #1-million. More of them would get the chance to play the "Big Guys" if ALL FBS teams played an "all FBS" schedule.

The biggest question is - will the big FBS schools lose a 7th home game & the $$$$ by going to an 11-game season? Maybe - maybe not. If so, no money will be lost with an average hike in ticket prices by 8-10%. That would not be noticed by most fans.

Not totally sure about all of this, even though I do like the way the Big 12 does it.

I'll use UT/LSU as an example. Many years ago, UT played LSU during the regular season and beat them soundly. They only had to win the SECCG to play for the NC. They lost to LSU in the SECCG and did not get to play for the NC.

A similar thing happened to AU last year as they beat UGA in the regular season, but lost in the SECCG. That kept AU out of the CFP.

Playing the same team twice in the same season does not always work well for the team that won the first time. I'm not sure how to fix it, but it should be fixed. There are issues having a weak division and a strong division in your conference (ACC and SEC).

Do away with Conf Championship games. 10 division winners plus 6 at large. This allows non P5, ND, or Alabama 2017 (non Dividion winning team to get in. Play 1st round at home of top 8 teams with visiting team getting say 1/3 of tickets. 2nd round at Conf Championship sites, then semis and final like at present.
