How can DJ look so crappy the first half,

Nov 14, 2021, 11:38 AM

then all world on that 35 second drive , then back to crappy the second half? Only thing I can see is there was no pretense of a run. All he had to do was throw and he made all the throws. Go figure.

I dont know. Its strange the better the field position the worse we do and the shorter the yardage the worse we block it. It is just strange

We have had a problem with the OL signees over the last

Nov 14, 2021, 12:10 PM

several years, except for the last class. Over the previous four years most of our OL signees seemed to be no taller than 6' 4". This was brought up during the play by play of our game with ND in 2020. We had several OL around 6' 2", and virtually no one hitting over 6'5" or taller.

Take a look at the NCSU, Louisville, FSU, UVA, and several other ACC OL's and they have more OL in the 6'6" height rather than our shorter OL.

I'm hopeful the next few OL signees will bring us some physical and bigger OL.

Per Dabo, Clemson's philosophy with respect to the O-Line roster is for ~ 15 players.

Looking at the NC State roster, they have ~ 20 O-Linemen (not including their obvious walk-on O-Linemen ... i.e., the guys who are 5'11" and/or weigh 250 lb.). I've looked at various other teams' O-Line rosters, and they typically have very close to 20 O-Linemen.

Clemson's roster management predicates on a high level of 'hits' with respect to O-Linemen. When some don't work out (i.e., 4* Paul Tchio and one or two other scholarship O-Linemen who have hardly sniffed the field after 2+ years on campus), then we have a big problem fielding an O-Line which has some depth to it.

Clemson was profoundly lucky with O-Linemen from 2015 (starting with brilliant play by true FR Mitch Hyatt ... who started his first game as a true FR, and was a 4 year starter), and under-sized but super-quick 3* Treymane Anchrum (also started as a true FR in 2016 before the end of that season). Hyatt and Anchrum played OT and hardly ever missed time due to injury. Then, we signed 5* OT Jackson Carman for the start of 2018 season (who backed up M.Hyatt in 2018), but was ready and a fine player for us in 2019 and 2020.

The punch line here is that Clemson's fantastic luck with respect to great success with a skimpy O-Line room may have come to an end, and Clemson has returned to less-than-elite status on offense as a consequence.

Because he knew he had to throw to the sideline which meant he had to read nothing. Especially since they were back shoulder throws.

I think throwing a football it like hitting a golf ball. Only one way to do it and it has to be the same every time. I'm no expert, but he must have some bad habits and fall back into them on some drives.

You can get away with that in high school but not D1. Everyone s good now.

Seems like a mental thing to me

Nov 14, 2021, 11:59 AM

Seems to be much more accurate when he’s not thinking about throwing the ball. When he just slings it on instinct he looks pretty awesome.

After 10 games, its pretty obvious that DJ is not the QB we thought he was going to be this year. So that brings up the following questions. How did he look so good last year against BC/ND? Did the Georgia game cause him to lose his confidence completely? How did the coaches miss so badly on him as a 5 star? Surely there we signs during his high school years. Cannon arm, slow feet and inconsistent!!
In his defense, how did the coaches allow the situation with the offensive line to become so bad that we had no experience up front?

He threw some good balls. Pass to Collins was his best

Nov 14, 2021, 12:02 PM

throw of the year in my mind. He really seems to throw better when pace of the offense is higher. That probably also means fewer changes, less thinking, and just rip it. Not sure why we don't try tempo more often.

He had more help from his receivers on that drive.

Well look at this way; Yesterday he looked crappy in the first half, maybe last week he was good in the 2nd half. I think they call it consistency!
You know, overthrow one ball 40 yards down field and then a few drives later underthrows that same 40 yard ball.
But hey lets not put all the blame on DJ; after all, he didn't decide to line up in the shotgun formation in his own end against Ga. Tech with the game still in doubt, did he?

After 10 games that all play out the same, maybe the coaches do not trust him and maybe he is just not more than a mediocre QB.

Re: How can DJ look so crappy the first half,

And, maybe the receivers are also playing mediocre dropping passes and running wrong routes and not blocking on plays. Inconsistency at all positions with no set lineups game after game. It's a team sport.
