They've had Top 10 recruiting classes going back 5 years

at least - plus the transfers they're always warm to that add some quality schputz at key positions. So the talent is there to warrant a premium position. I don't like their chances Week 2 FWIW.

They are in the SEC. That is all that matters to ESPN.

According to ESPN's "FPI"

Louisville was ranked ahead of us last year even after we beat them. Their "FPI" is just a tool to help them sell their biased narrative. It has absolutely no bearing on who's a great team or who's not or which teams will beat the other. ESPN's "FPI" is about as legit as a poll from CNN.

To be fair, their offense did start to click at the end of the year, and they are getting former Baylor QB Jarrett Stidham coming in which is a significant upgrade over last years hot mess.
Biggest issue is the defense with losses on Dline and LBs.
I can see them being top-10 if they can finally coach players up. I would say they are second in the SEC ahead of LSU ... but a significant gap from Bama.

Good post uktiger1....
Stidham is actually really good. As a true freshman, he was forced into the starting role, with an injury to Baylor's starter. In three games, before he got hurt as well, he completed 51-of-81 passes for 934 yards, six touchdowns and two interceptions. Five of those incompletions were dropped passes, three were thrown away and four were batted at the line.
That's really good for a true freshman. I could see Malzahn tweaking the offense to look more like ours, and if Stidham stays healthy, Auburn could challenge for the SEC West.
Glad we have them in the Valley.

when they can't even get the counts right in the line under the title. There are, in fact, 5 teams each from the SEC and Pac-12 but only 4 from the Big 12. The ACC does, however, have 5 teams in this poll. For the record, the Big 10 also has 4 while the AAC and the MWC have 1 each.

at 32. You've got to be kidding me. How is SC the 32nd best team right now based on last year's results. They beat one team with a winning record and strength of schedule about as bad as it gets.
SC should be somewhere between 70 and 80.

36th in preseason S&P+ as well, but I'm pretty

sure they are being overrated by their overrated 5 year recruiting average. I think we've seen over the last two seasons that many of their recruits either failed to meet expectations or just haven't been developed well at SC. The talent level in that program doesn't match the recruiting rankings.
I think Muschamp is elevating the talent level a bit, but to expect that team to jump from around 80th (where they've been the last two years), to the mid 30s is a bit much.
Heck, Bill Connelly did a podcast a few weeks back about Clemson and South Carolina and he pointed out the fact that Muschamp routinely under-performs based on his talent level. Aside from one season in 2012, he consistently took top 10 talent and put 25-35 level teams on the field. Based on that what do we really expect him to do with top 15-25 talent at SC (when the talent level gets back to that point)? Probably put a top ~40 product on the field. That's probably good for roughly 7-5 seasons on average and that's likely his ceiling at SC unless his coaching improves significantly.

It takes time to recover from crappy coaching so last year was basically a throw away year. This year they should be much improved.

I posted a few weeks ago that espn will find a way to get auburn into the top 10 by the time they play clemson.
That is the ONLY reason they do these preseason polls.
