How about a “dumbest play of the game” contest going forward?

Nov 28, 2022, 3:20 PM

I’ll start: Dumb play #1. Calling a trick lateral play upon receiving a kickoff for a team struggling with fumbleitis with the prerequisite fumble result. Just as the team was exhibiting confidence and momentum, the fumble killed both.
Dumb play #2. With solid running and momentum, at 3rd and three, the call is a long low percentage success play from a quarterback with high throw tendencies, which of course doesn’t work. Drive and momentum stopped right before the half.
Any others?

The entire 2nd half with a QB riding a bike instead of the bench.

Bingo! We have a winner!

If the fumble had occurred during the exchange from Shipley to Mafah that would make more sense.

I wouldn't include plays where an obvious error occurs, because no one calls the 'fumble the ball' or 'totally overthrow the receiver' play.

Given that, I don't have much problem with the kickoff 'trick' play as if Mafah holds on to the ball it's a nice gain.
But the long pass play on 3rd and 3? Yeah, that's kind of mystifying.

Partly agree, partly disagree . . .

yeah, no one calls the fumble play, I get that one.

But as for no calling the throw high, play, well, that's different. DJ regularly throws off target, and we have a good running game, and the yardage to go was very modest. The percentages there seem to point towards the run.

Well in that case, given our QB... ANY pass play can qualify!

It’s mystifying and far too reoccurring.

in football. You don't call dumba$$ trick plays unless they are absolutely necessary, because they have a very high likelyhood of going wrong and backfiring.

Sure "if" every player did everything exactly right then it would have been a brilliant call...

Except no, it wouldn't have. Morons would think it was, but anyone who knows anything would think it was stupid.

You design plays and you call plays based on maximizing reward, minimizing risk, and understanding how to gain yardage and first downs while accounting for mistakes. You don't call plays with the ridiculous expectation that every player is going to do everything perfectly every time.

It seems like Shipley would have picked up about the same yardage by keeping the ball.

Yeah, he was averaging over seven yards per carry.

Especially if those other four were finding someone to block***

field position...and we had them on the ropes. We simply outcoached ourselves trying to be cute versus a coach who calls cute calls...but well placed ones.

6:40 to go, backed up on our own 3, we get a facemask against SC to bring us out to the 24. We take a deep shot with our struggling (understatement) QB to our TE running down the sideline covered by a corner. INT

True you throw to TE when covered by a linebacker which is quite often. DJ should have not thrown to TE when he saw he was coverd by corner. That is QB basics. He either does not retain what he has been taught. Or? Surely he has been coached.

It wasn't a DJ mistake per se. It was a play by design. We lined Allen up out wide.

Agreed. Even if not for the INT, we score leaving too much time left on the clock

Run the ball and the clock, kick game winning FG to end it and count your blessings.

How about the 2nd and 3 play that preceded the 3rd and 3?***

I think #2 is first. . second letting DJ throw at all when Ship gets 9 yard a carry. Stupid and very bad decision

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Having Dabo's son in on 2nd and 3rd downs...I stated right

Nov 28, 2022, 4:10 PM

then it was a run, or a quick pass to the OTHER side...
