Hopefully the NCAA changes the portal rules soon

Jan 26, 2022, 12:07 AM

The kids are going to be the ones hurt in the long run as the portal numbers pile up with many kids losing their scholarships & coaches have less scholarships to recruit right out of High School.

Hopefully they don’t go beyond 6-8 teams in the playoffs also. These kids don’t need to play beyond 15 games in a season!

Good points here. On the flip side though, if these kids have a full ride and seek greener pastures, but never get picked up in the portal; that's on them.

One of the tragedies in the portal is that teams like Bama, UGA, and others are leveraging it to recruit kids that are on active rosters at other schools. This becomes obvious when a kid goes in the portal one day and comes out the next naming their destination.

The reality is that nothing prohibits the coaches that recruited these athletes from being "friends" with them after they sign with another school. You can bet there are a lot of cryptic texts and "likes" going on with social media.

Just curious ... the D1-FCS plays 11 regular season games followed by a 24 team playoff. D2 also plays 11 regular season games and has a 28 team playoff. How is it that they can figure out a playoff system while D2-FBS can't? Too many games for FBS?...seems no one is concerned about "safety" and "too many games" for the FCS and D2 players. What am I missing here...please educate me.

All of the recent rule changes in college football are to pander to the top 5% of players in the college game.

"Let me make money because the schools are profiting so much from having me be good at football" - This is only true for the headline guys at each school and only applies to a small percentage of schools across the country that are actually making a substantial profit from their recognition.

"Let me transfer without having to sit out" - They should have named this the Justin Fields rule. The NCAA was perfectly fine telling guys that nobody knew that they had to sit out, but Fields' name was bigger than the rules. Once a few other big names joined to push to switch schools the NCAA just caved.

The same is true of the "we can't play anymore games" push. This is being done to protect the life of the players who will have games to play in the NFL after they finish their college career. There are very few of these type of players at the FCS and D2 level comparatively and so very few people care if the kids play some extra games. Most of those kids are happy to get extra games compared to the 75% of power 5 players who think they need to save themselves for a long career in the NFL.
