WR struggles

Oct 4, 2021, 9:57 AM

Way too inconsistent. With a struggling QB we’ve got to come down with some of these catchable balls. I’ve seen several flat out drops (some in the end zone) that were great throws. Others off target but still catchable that we aren’t hauling in.

honestly.. i can't remember anyone other than Ngata even

Oct 4, 2021, 10:04 AM

being involved in the pass game. He caught balls and dropped that one but...do we have any other receivers? Ross had the one drop.. i don't think his head is in the game. He may be done for the year. He seems disinterested but i'm just speculating. I know EJ got banged up.. and Davis Allen got ejected for targeting.. but.. thats it.

is Ladson hurt?

Oct 4, 2021, 10:07 AM

not seeing him much and doesn't seem to be progressing.

Ladson left the game early with a groin injury I believe.

Has Ladson ever NOT been hurt? He's always hurt.....

Oct 4, 2021, 11:04 AM

for one reason or another.

Ross either isn't mentally in the game or he's gun shy about being hit due to his serious injury last year. Is Frank Ladson even playing anymore?

You can definitely see a drop off with our receivers since we lost Tee Higgins and Amari Rogers.

Re: I agree - where are the other receivers besides Ngata and...

Oct 4, 2021, 12:14 PM

What has every successful Clemson WR corps had in common? A true and reliable slot. Adam Humphries, Artavis Scott, Hunter Renfrow, Amari Rodgers....now with Brannon Spector out, we're at 0. Hope he can recover from his complications, but if not, we're stuck at 0 until Nathaniel Joseph comes in 2 years from now. Without a true slot for defenses to plan for and respect, our passing game has been exposed. Lacking that aspect of our passing offense does allow it to work as a whole. Especially with an inexperienced QB.

I'm sure everyone can agree with that, but if you need further proof, go check out DJ's highlights in South Bend last year. Amari was his security blanket.

Correction - still have Troy Stellato next year, so a little hope there.

Might need to fast-track Taylor's conversion from QB, once he's healthy again.

If I Were Ross...

Oct 4, 2021, 10:09 AM [ in reply to honestly.. i can't remember anyone other than Ngata even ]

I wouldn't be interested in a QB that can't hit me when I'm wide open .

If this goes much longer and Clemson loses another game or two I'd expect Ross to call it
quits and get ready for the combine . No sense in getting hurt for a team that has the
125th ranked QB .

Re: If I Were Ross...

Oct 4, 2021, 10:13 AM

With the drops, inconsistent effort, and poorly run routes, I would imagine that Ross has played himself to somewhere around the 3rd or 4th round at this point in the season.

I hope you aren't relative of his or his agent because you would be losing him a good bit of money by telling him to have a seat.

He has not shown that he has made his way back from injury whatsoever.

Re: If I Were Ross...

Oct 4, 2021, 10:17 AM

Agreed- his freshman season he looked like an NFL lock, then his sophomore season was a bit of a step back, and now this year has been completely inconsistent. He really needs to finish this season strong to make an early round grade in this year’s draft!

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Doesn't he have another year? If so, he needs to.........

Oct 4, 2021, 11:06 AM

come back next season and get his game back in shape. Going into the NFL draft after this season will be a big mistake on his part as he's not ready.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Ross dropped two well thrown TDs to end the NCSU game***

DJ hit Ross right in the hands on Saturday on an early

Oct 5, 2021, 8:09 AM [ in reply to If I Were Ross... ]

3rd down play and it went right through the hands.Sammy used to attack the ball with his hands, meaning he went to the ball and was ready for the ball to hit... on that pass.. Ross was lazy and too non-nonchalant and didn't get his hands up in time and the ball was passed him.. Thats the play that i drew my assumptions on him being disinterested. Like Tiger77 said he could be disinterested or gun-shy. Gun shy i would understand and there isn't much you can do about that. But disinterested i hope its not that b/c otherwise he's shoveling away alot of NFL money.

Oct 4, 2021, 11:26 AM [ in reply to honestly.. i can't remember anyone other than Ngata even ]

Just off the top of my head Saturday night ngata dropped the back shoulder, beaux dropped 1 or 2, frank dropped one, Ross had 1 go through his hands, jalyn dropped one, and I’m sure I’m missing a couple more. If the recievers and tightends can just hang onto the catchable balls that might be all it takes to get Dj on track. Dj is in a funk and I believe he has the yips because we saw how good he was last year but the rest of the offense has to help him and play as a team if that can be done I think we could win a few games comfortably but we’ll see. We did make improvements this week though. Anyways GO TIGERS!!!

Re: WR struggles

Oct 4, 2021, 10:21 AM

Our receivers look awful. Ngata is the only guy who fights for the ball and shows any desire on the field. Dabo can say what he wants after the game, but the evidence is on tape for everyone to watch.

When Jeff Scott was here, blocking was a priority. Now, our screens are blown up before the receiver even gets the ball. The route tree is pretty basic (based on what the experts say) and as I mentioned at first, there's no "want to" and it's awful hard to push a rope.

Re: WR struggles

Oct 4, 2021, 10:27 AM

I think we have a lot of talent at WR, but it just needs to be developed and get them involved. WRs are a funny lot. If you dont get them involved early and often (Catchable balls helps) then they tend to go away. We have not seen much of these guys because well, there have not been NEARLY as many offensive plays as we are used to seeing. I think Ross is good, REALLY good possibly, but I never saw him as the #1 guy before, that was Tee, and then last year it was his turn but he was hurt. I think Beaux can become really good, just have some growing pains to deal with there. Ajou Ajou was really coming on strong, but again, not enough plays to even see him get on the field it seems. One thing has become perfectly clear however. I am FINALLY seeing what Dabo has raved about with Ngata previously. Not saying he hasnt dropped a few he should have had, but the way he has played when hes on makes me REALLY wish we had Trevor one last year. In fact, while some have bashed Ngata lately, where we would be without him and Ross? Yikes!

Re: WR struggles

Oct 4, 2021, 10:33 AM

The inconsistency with Ross -- and being put in the slot where he isn't comfortable -- point to the coaches trying to fit a square peg in a round hole. He's 6-4, let him go get balls on the perimeter or over the top. That's what he does best and let him become a superstar his freshman year.

Ngata has been sensational, I wonder if he can play the slot?

Ladson has been a disappointment, he was good at times last year but hasn't done anything in 2021. EJ Williams is playing through a hand injury, so props to him for gutting it out but the coaches shouldn't let him be out there if he can't be 100%. We're already limited, we don't need to play with 10 guys.

Re: WR struggles

Oct 4, 2021, 10:30 AM

As for Ross, he’s not gun shy or afraid of getting hurt. He’s a baller. We’ve all seen what he can do, and he as much as anyone, wants to show out to get to the next level. It’s got to be hard for him to get into a rhythm, coming back from injury, and being placed all over the field. He’s been at the slot and returning, not his usual positions. That’s on the coaches.
He’s frustrated. You can see it in his body language.
The other WRs, I believe they’re all trying to figure it out like everyone else on the team. Yeah, some are young, dropping balls. The play calling is disjointed and the offense has no identity right now. Once again, that’s on coaching. Can’t figure out what they’ve all been doing during the off season.

Re: WR struggles

Oct 4, 2021, 11:36 AM [ in reply to Re: WR struggles ]

I would like to think all of those good things about Ross, but at this point in the season his memorable plays have been 2 game defining (and possibly season defining) plays where he seemed to show a lack of effort for his team.

He gave up on a route vs UGA that turned into a pick 6 and the game defining play. Even if he had no chance to catch the ball, an effort to tackle or even bump into the guy making a play on the ball likely keeps it from being a free run TD.

He also failed to show fight for the ball on the last play vs NC State on a "do or die" play that ended the game. This was even more disappointing in my eyes because he was our entire receiving offense in that game and had to know the team was relying on him to make a play in OT. His response was to drop one pass and give up on another one. Guys that are what Ross is supposed to be make something happen in those 2 chances.

Re: WR struggles

Oct 5, 2021, 12:19 PM

In my lowly opinion Ross has not recovered mentally from his injury and has been part of the offensive problem He allowed Ga to score their only TD game over Never looked around and even put his hands up last play in NC State game Has dropped several passes for 3rd down conversion It’s obvious he is afraid of contact and the slot surely does not work for him I think we would be better to sit him

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Ross is a FANTASTIC player

Oct 5, 2021, 12:32 PM

I will never forget what he did in the championship game and he is a winner

He has done so much for this university and just to recover to even play football again is absolutely amazing. None of you have ever gone through anything close to what this man has done

GO ROSS

GO TIGERS

with their hands? In the last few years , I’ve seen the wr corp, in general, regress in their development, minus powell and rodgers. At some point, Grisham has to be held a bit accountable.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: WR struggles

Oct 5, 2021, 12:40 PM

Please don't suggest it could be our coaching related. Grisham is a Clemson man. That's all that is required to be coach here these days. Actual previous successful coaching experience in a Power 5 program is nice to have, but not required.
