Honest opinion about our QB situation (short post):

1

Sep 19, 2021, 8:22 AM

I really do believe we would be much better off with Will Taylor at QB. At this point.
Not saying DJ could never be the guy. I really want to believe in him.

He's not ready yet. I'd much rather see Taylor moved to the slot and give TP some reps.

Screw Calford.

Maybe so. I mean, I don’t think any change will occur anyway.

Just think WT would be mobile and dynamic, breathing some life into the offense. Pretty sure he could complete some passes, too.

I like TP as well, but just feel like he’s another Kelly Bee type.

One of the major weaknesses of this team is we don't have the dynamic playmaker at slot that we did in years past. Dabo is too stubborn to move Taylor to the slot where he should be.

If you move WT to slot who is going to throw the football to him? Better yet, who is going to call the play to throw the football to him? A slot receiver is worthless without a checkdown QB to throw to him and an OC that can dial up the plays. I've heard of teams being one dimensional but we are zero dimensional.

DJU5 can't even hit a tall Ross or Ladson over the middle on a slant accurately. The issue is him. Next man up. The dude is a deer in headlights out there and he gets worse as he makes mistakes.

WT not ready? But DJ is? I suppose if DJ gives us our best chance to win then okay. But, I'm not so sure that's true at this point. Seems like we are trying to push a square block through a round hole.

Agreed, After 3 games DJ clearly needs to sit and watch .

Sometimes you hit big when recruiting players and sometimes you just miss. This looks to me to be the latter.

Doesn't DW4 have one more year of eligibility, and he's not currently playing anywhere, and college players can get paid now? We can offer up a bunch of offensive linemen in the trade. I'd go that route.

Re: Honest opinion about our QB situation (short post):

Sep 19, 2021, 9:08 AM

Its obvious at this point that the coaches know our only hope to sneak into the playoffs is for the light to go on with DJ. Once we go with another QB we effectively end our playoff hopes because none of them have the ability to be as good as we saw DJ be last season. I think you'll see them stick with DJ until we lose one more game and then, once our playoff hopes are officially over, you'll see them start looking at playing someone else at QB. Its too bad we have terrible QB depth or we would have already tried someone else.

My question is why are we so week at quarterback? We’re told every year that our recruiting is better than average and we get the best recruits so what’s the problem?

Re: Honest opinion about our QB situation (short post):

Sep 19, 2021, 9:45 AM

the transfer portal is part of it. if a kid gets beat out he just "quits" and goes somewhere else. suspect LJD will be doing just this in a week or so. How many QB's did Trevor single-handedly cause to transfer? I think it was 4....

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I think our playoff hopes ended last night…

Sep 19, 2021, 9:38 AM [ in reply to Re: Honest opinion about our QB situation (short post): ]

Since the UGA game was such a tight game we didn’t need to win it in order to still make the playoffs. But we did need to steamroll through the rest of the schedule and show we were still the alpha dog. That didn’t happen last night and there is nothing so far in our body of work that shows it will happen.

I saw a tiny spark from DJ the second half…mainly in the 4th. I hate he fumbled on one drive and he has to be smarter in that situation. I think he is trying way too hard. Wish he’d just relax and have fun. I think we’d see a different QB.

Re: Honest opinion about our QB situation (short post):

Sep 19, 2021, 10:04 AM

I don't disagree with your asessment of DJ. But, I believe their appeared to be (4) QB run plays called yesterday. On one who spun right into the rush, on the 2nd he fumbled the snap because he was looking ahead, on one he tuck an ran 4 yards, and Yes on one, he gained a much needed 14 yards and a first down.

There seems to be a bad disconnect between the receivers and QB. Is that disconnect before the game and spills over into gameday? Swinney and Elliott are the only ones who can figure that one out.

Re: Honest opinion about our QB situation (short post):

Sep 19, 2021, 9:53 AM

Will Taylor isn’t the answer. I hope the strength and conditioning team is working with Cade Klubnik right now. We need to add about 10 pounds of muscle on that kid before spring ball. DJ needs some serious completion, right now there isn’t a viable alternative at QB. The lack of depth there is concerning.

Re: Honest opinion about our QB situation (short post):

Sep 19, 2021, 9:59 AM

Actually he’s only one of the answers. If you keep pressing someone like they continue to do with DJ, it’ll probably do more harm than good. Try someone else and see how it goes. Elite programs do that. Bama, GA, etc… We stick with what isn’t working and that’s (as usual) a coaching problem. We simply won’t know until we try. And from the looks of it, that isn’t happening.

Re: Honest opinion about our QB situation (short post):

Sep 19, 2021, 10:00 AM

One QB spends too much time on NIL contracts. Go back to the presser after the Georgia game and see which of the (5) player's interviews showed up in three-piece suit, loaded down with jewelry, a fedora and doing personal grooming during the interview.

It appears DJ wants to be a pocket passer and some want to just acknowledges his 'rifle arm passing". Guess what, our OL line is not at a high enough level to give him that luxury.

Why, Why - does Elliott and Swinney not give TP7 a shot or yes, Taylor. They can move thir feet.

A little down time never hurts any of us.

Sep 19, 2021, 10:17 AM

My question is how did DJ regress soooooo much from the games last year. He looked really good at ND, top 10 team, at their place, and D screwed it up with stupid penalties. This year DJ is nowhere near that QB. Why ???

Not Ready

Sep 19, 2021, 10:40 AM

See the comments about "not ready" - so that might be used for Helms or Will Taylor (and it may very well be accurate). Doubt TP is the answer but that's just IMO. So a question: how long does it take to get "ready". In 1993 Patrick Sapp was struggling. Coach Hat (who was likely the worst recruiter in the history of the NCAA) pulled Dexter McCleon off the defense and practiced him for 1 week. We rolled into Cola and defeated our arch rival in Coach Hats last game (yes, he needed to be fired). So Dex got "ready" for the biggest game of the year in a week. Sometimes you need to think outside the box when your QB can't hit on a 10 yard screen pass because he has no touch. So maybe we can accelerate the "get ready" curve based on our current plight. No need to attack a player that is trying as hard as he can, but in my 56 years of visiting the Valley I would rank DJ along with Will Proctor, Billy Lott, and Patrick Sapp as the 4 worst I have ever seen for passing execution. I would like for someone to name a Tiger QB with less touch that started significant games since 1965. Hope DJ improves because no change is coming. Go Tigers

I heard about Hunter Johnson in 2017. He wasn't the answer then and neither are any of the back ups this year.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I would agree with you, except for the fact that I no longer have confidence in Elliott

Sep 19, 2021, 11:12 AM

to have a game plan to suit a different player’s strengths. I have zero confidence in his ability to make adjustments.

The secret sauce doesn’t seem to be the offensive coaches, but generational talent at QB to make the right decisions (including audibles at the line of scrimmage) and executing with a plethora of talent.

Probably wouldn't go Taylor! I think everyone has forgotten about H. Helms. He doesn't have the same athleticism; but is a gamer. He has been in the system longer and has done nothing to show he can't handle it.
Taisun from what you read has stepped up his play as well! They were not saying all those good things about him previously! So, who knows. I think he deserves a shot to see if he can move the offense.

If DJ continues to struggle I would try TP7 and see how he does. I'm still worried about his Achilles but the offense did seem to move better with him at QB then DJ. He is much more mobile and could help cover our OL concerns

I don't know if we are ready to see Taylor pick apart complex college coverages at this point. I could be wrong.

If this offense looks this way in 3 weeks with at least 1 loss I will agree a change is needed but I do not think Taylor is the answer. I do think we should go ahead and move him to the slot and see if he gives us a spark. We have two other OB's but I still believe DJ will come around.

wow you have raised a ugly head. But Right. We have no OC. Elliott needs to sit on sideline. He is truely not division 1 caliber. However we do nopt have a workable QB. He has lead feet, no vision, no ability to read defenses and no quality to throw a touch pass. So How can we do worse with any body back up. Maybe put a bench man in see if he can play QB. DJ certainly is not
