XT and Bates

Jan 19, 2020, 8:59 AM

It's safe to say that Bates walked into the best dline coaching situation last year. An entire NFL dline with two 5* freshman de's, one ranked #1 overall.

It's also think that XT was not overrated.
Or K.J.

I wrote a letter to Todd Bates the day Dan Brooks retired, congratulating him and specifically about our rich tradition of Dlineman that has made us feared defensively for decades. Also mentioned #93 and the significance of it. Figured he didn't know Gaines.

No reply. Not that I expected it, but Jeff Scott wrote me back and I still have it. This is not a bash Bates post. He's had to deal with a minor drop In talent(* wise) and it seems like sacks by Dlineman are getting fewer. I can't stand this. Seriously.

The first appealing thing to me about football was learning that you could hit the Quarterback and take him down. It's almost as thrilling as a big td run or pick 6.

I know we went 3 3 5 this year but does anyone see that changing next year with us getting another CW in Bresee? I love the 4 3 defense and I bet it was frustrating to the DL this year. Put alot of stress on our back 7 all year and it showed in the NCG.

Changes in scheme next year, PLEASE?

Thoughts appreciated. Thanks for reading

I am sure we go back to a 4-3 next year. Talent dictates that, just like personnel dictated 3-4 this year. You do realize, Coach Bates just coaches the DT’s....right. DE are coached by Lemanski Hall.

I think Niles is just okay to kind of good. He is great for depth, but I am hoping he is just in the rotation like Huggins was, unless he takes his game to a new level, which he easily could. I am praying that Bresee, Capehart, Tre Williams, or even Taquon Johnson dominate. Either way, sounds like we will have a nice rotation on the DL all the way around. Can't wait.

Also, Bates helped make Tyler Davis the best Freshman DT in the country. If you are upset about XT or DE pressure, that's Hall's position, but let's give those kids some time to develop. Henry is showing signs of a breakout. Rudolph and Foster weren't 5 stars coming in, but even though they aren't elite pass rushers, they are pretty productive. I will admit that I was hoping Thomas would break out this year, but maybe he just needs one more offseason. He is still young.

Thanks Bill. I remember that moment almost like it was yesterday. I no longer work there but I often wonder when we will see his name come up on the recruiting radar.

I remember seeing a nice looking, well dressed kid wearing private school clothing, I'm guessing Cambridge Academy, like his dad. The mother had on Tampa Bay jersey on or redskins, don't remember which one but I knew before I asked her when they came to check out.

It was one of the most bittersweet moments I've had as a tiger fan seeing little Gaines and knowing he'd grow up without his daddy.

Also, what a blessing be at the same time. I'll NEVER forget it????

Re: XT and Bates

Jan 19, 2020, 9:55 AM

I hope everyone realizes that Bates is the DT coach and Lemanski Hall is the DE coach. So if we are judging Bates here, Tyler Davis as a freshman has been phenomenal. Injuries have hampered some other guys. If we are judging the DE’s we have to point to scheme and personnel for the production. 3 down line defensive ends tend to look more like Christian Wilkins not XT and K.J. It was a difficult situation for those guys this year. With the guys coming in we all expect to see 4 down linemen for the majority of next season. From there we can judge whether it’s the coaching or the players.

Are you forgetting Tyler Davis. He started as a freshman. He will bigger and stronger by August. We would like to win Natty ever year, but with every team trying to bring us down winning is not as easy as many think. It takes effort there are NO shortcuts. Experience of the four we had playing together was not easily replaced. I believe our team played admirably this year. With ETN coming back that will help our offense. DJ is a big plus. He will be great in QB room.

I think people are going to be absolutely stunned by the impact of our freshman D-line class, particularly Bresee and Murphy. Getting those two in the same class is just crazy.

Starting from game 1, the D-line will be next level compared to last year.

Best DL situation or worst? He ended up in a situation where he had 1 year before a massive rebuild. You are give him no credit for the quality that he inherited, but blame him for what he was left with. Do you give him any credit for being the primary recruiter for Davis, Bresee, Capehart, and Williams? I would say that is a pretty good start at rebuilding.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: XT and Bates

Jan 19, 2020, 11:21 AM

You’ll probably get bashed in this thread but I agree with you to some extent. Bates is a better recruiter than he is a coach. He’s an excellent recruiter, probably the 2nd best on the staff behind BV. Hobby and Dan Brooks were definitely better coaches, but didn’t have the recruiting prowess or sales pitch that Bates has.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: XT and Bates

Jan 19, 2020, 11:23 AM

To clarify, this goes for Lemanski Hall as well.

Coaching:
Brooks/Hobby > Bates/Hall

Recruiting:
Bates/Hall > Brooks/Hobby

A combo of Bates and Hobby would’ve been something.

Like players coaches also learn from being thrown into game environment. Nobody wants to admit we had a much more difficult path to get to finals. There were some hurting players after OSU game on both sides of the ball. Scores between two game is playoff reflect how tough it was or not. True some OK players were stupid and smoked rec drugs, but they were already picked to lose by a substantial margin. Our game was supposed to be close and it was. Can remember Dabo said players needed time to recover. In the finals it appeared to me some had not recovered.

Jan 19, 2020, 11:52 AM

The starters will pretty much be the same next year, difference is they will all be more seasoned and ready, not to mention another off season in strength and conditioning, couple that with more highly touted depth coming in. I think Tyler Davis will end up being the stud on the line, but XT and KJ have to prove they can win their 1 on 1 battles and get to the QB. We can't rely on all the sacks coming from the back 7 again in blitz packages. If we can get back to getting persistent pressure with the front 4 alone we'll be in great shape.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: XT and Bates

Jan 19, 2020, 6:05 PM

I guarantee you the starters next year will NOT be the same.

Tyler Davis is the only one pretty much guaranteed. XT is very likely also. The other two positions are wide open.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: XT and Bates

Jan 20, 2020, 4:08 PM

XT, Davis, Pinkney and Foster will be the favs to start again. Rudolph and KJ will be pushing hard on the end positions. Breese and Williams will be in the rotation in the middle. Like I said, the starters will more than likely be the same, it'll just have a deeper and better rotation this time. Hopefully all those guys put in work this offseason, they were so young this past year and did have the size and strength of the previous front 4 yet. This year will be different.

You can argue that there wasn't a massive dropoff in

Jan 20, 2020, 11:37 AM

"talent," but their was a massive dropoff in experienced talent (thus actual effectiveness) as well as depth. Let's harken back to the days of the NCAA football video game. You can sign 5* players to replace previous 5* players, but Wilkins, Lawrence, and Ferrell had like 99 ratings and these young guys are more like 80-85s. They may get to 99 some day, but they certainly weren't there in 2019.

There's a reason Venables abandoned the 4-3 that he's run for his entire tenure at Clemson. The DL players returning for 2019 just weren't anywhere near as good as the group we had in 2018. Take less talent, add in the 3-man front that limits playmaking (or stat stuffing) opportunities for the DL and you get a massive dropoff in sacks and TFLs from the DL.

Now if we continue to have issues with the DL in 2020 and 2021 then it's probably time to question the job that Bates is doing, but right now i think it's pretty ridiculous.

Jan 20, 2020, 5:09 PM

Welp, BV was kind forced to run 3-1-7 in the NCG, due to the insane VG no’s put up by JB during the RS. Doubt if crashing LBs repeatedly over the LOS would have prevented any TDS or XPs. Any way you cut it LSU had POY and COY, not just in the SEC, but in the entire NCAA, as well.

That’s OK. Next year, we’ll have HTW TLaw and another NCR.

QWERTY and out.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Yes, we should be back in our base 4-3 with a LB that

Jan 20, 2020, 5:28 PM

Has safety skills (hopefully)

We will probably still use the 3-3-5 some against strong passing teams.

The 3 man front changes things up for our ends. You really need a guy like Christian Wilkins to play strong side end in a 3 man front.

Our guys are better suited to playing a 5 or 7 technique (outside in space) and speed rushing / keeping contain. Based on our recruiting pipeline of DL I don’t see us going away from the 4 man front unless necessary.
