Historical Playoff Question

Dec 15, 2021, 11:59 AM

(using old terms here) How is it that the old Div 1 is the only college football division to never (apparently, maybe?) have had a full playoff system while all the other divisions have had playoffs? I've always wondered this but never seen or heard any explanation. Back in the early days, it wasn't all about money and TV like it is now, so that's not it, not entirely, anyway (or is it?). They're all colleges with the same basic academic schedule, and all play the same basic number of games, so it can't be something about exam schedules or playing too many games.

I've just always found it odd that Div 1A was the only division - to my knowledge - to NOT have playoffs?? Or am I missing something here?

I'd have to guess it has to do with the power (money) of the Rose, Sugar, Orange, Cotton Bowls and so on in having a big hand in not allowing a playoff system.
