Hiring From Within and "The Sean McVay Effect"

Dec 8, 2021, 3:15 AM

When we consider hiring Skalski, Boulware and other young former players consider Sean McVay, the youngest person to ever be a head NFL coach at 30. He has made Super Bowl appearances and has been named NFL Coach of the Year. He got his first NFL job at 22. Became an OC at 28 and HC at 30.

“After more than a decade of mediocrity, futility and zero playoff appearances, the Los Angeles Rams got risky. On January 12, 2017, they made quite possibly the NFL’s best head-coaching hire in recent memory. They took a chance on Sean McVay, who was 30 years old at the time and only had three years of experience as an offensive coordinator.
Not only did it turn the franchise on its head in the best way possible, but it also changed what NFL teams looked for in head coaches. Need proof? Just look at the first two hires of this year’s coaching carousel.”

1. He was 30
2. He had 3 years experience as OC.
3. He had SOME coaching experience. You're talking about players that have NEVER coached.
4. Exceptions to a rule don't justify breaking it.

This^

Kiffin was 32 when he was given the HC job atthe Raiders, 34 at UT - similar if not more experience. Not everyone is "ready" at 30. Belichick was 39 when he took over the Browns and was fired "meh" ish. Hired a 39YO Saban just finishing his first year as a HC. Dabo was 38 then 39 when made HC.See a pattern.

If you look at the list of youngest coaches, you have your normal mix. A lot a duds and a few HOF. Cab make the same list of coaches in their 50. However, while a few are younger than the mid 30s, you see a sharp rise that many, many become HC between 35-40. Being on the leading edge of the trail often does not work but by the mid-40 it becomes a downward angle. BV is kinda an old choice for their first HC gig.

He coached at a high level for 6 years and then he got his first coordinator job.

He coached at a high level for 8 years and then he got his first head coaching job.

Should we start counting the 6 years now or should we wait until either of those players start coaching and then start their 6 year count before we hire them as a coordinator?

Maybe if we can get each of them to coach for 3 years then we can hire them as co-coordinators.

To clarify, McVey got his first NFL job at 22, became an NFL offensive coordinator at 28, head coach at 30.
