Howard, Clemson's football fortunes took a downturn. The season would only produce 4 wins vs 5 losses. A 2-3-0 SoCon mark would see the Tigers finish 10th of the once again 16 teams competing that year.
Many of our brave young men who had survived the horrors of WWII were coming back to school on the GI Bill, which was created by then President Roosevelt on June 22, 1944. Note that this was barely two weeks after D-Day.
It is worth noting that, if this were modern times, the Frank Howard era at Clemson may well have ended after this season. Seven years in, and the fortunes taking a downturn? Highly likely that Clemson would have moved on to another coach. We can be glad that they didn't.
In the middle of this lackluster season, however, was a loss on Big Thursday in Columbia, as the Tigers fell to the Dirtpeckers 26-14. After this, Clemson led the series 28-14-2.
The season did end on a bright spot, with the Tigers securing a satisfying 21-13 win over the Auburn Tigers / War Eagles / Whatever Elses on the Plains in Alabama. All results below.
