3 years ago, 2019: The world has a new Royal, as Meghan

Markle and Prince Harry unveil their son Archie. Jussie Smollett fakes being the victim of a Hate Crime and is arrested by police, but charges are later dismissed. 13 year old Jayme Closs escapes her captor, who had killed both her parents and then kidnapped her. Jake Thomas Patterson, 21, pleaded guilty to the crimes, and was sentenced to life without parole.

A fire does major damage to the historic Notre Dame cathedral in France, while it was undergoing renovations. Astronomers released the first-ever image of a black hole, which they said "feels like looking at the gates of Hell." In July, the US women's national soccer team won its fourth World Cup.
In August, while awaiting trial on sex-trafficking charges, Jeffrey Epstein died by suicide in prison.
Thirty one people were killed in two separate mass shootings in the US in less than 24 hours. First, 22 were killed in a Texas Wal-Mart, and 13 hours later, 9 were killed in Dayton, Ohio.

The ACC Football Champions for 2019 were once again the No. 2 (8-0, 14-1) Clemson Tigers. They won the ACC Championship Game 62-17 over No. 23 Virginia. They entered the College Football Playoffs as the No. 3 seed. Details of the season and playoffs below.

Clemson had lost many great players to graduation, or early departure to the NFL. The entire “Power Rangers” defensive line was gone, including fifth man Albert Huggins. Trayvon Mullen and Mark Fields were gone from the back end, along with linebacker Tre Lamar. But, Clemson returned plenty of potential replacements for all these. With the notable exception of Hunter Renfrow, all the major offensive weapons were back. (Tavien Feaster transferred to South Carolina.)

Clemson vs Georgia Tech in Death Valley on a Thursday night opened the season. Travis Etienne led the charge with a career high 205 rushing yards and 3 TD's, as the Tigers rolled, 52-14. Clemson had opened the season ranked No. 1, and held that for a 24-10 win over No. 12 Texas A&M at home, and a 41-6 road romp over Syracuse in the Carrier Dome. Death Valley welcomed the Charlotte 49ers rudely, as Clemson hung at 52-10 defeat on them.

But, still at No. 1 the next week, the Tigers narrowly escaped a determined upset bid by Coach Mack Brown's North Carolina Tarheels in Chapel Hill. We got out of there with a 21-20 victory when UNC went for two and the win, instead of a tie and overtime, and the Clemson defense stopped the Heels. By now, for whatever ulterior reasons, the TV talking heads were on a Jihaad against the “weak ACC”, and Clemson began to drop in the polls, even though we were still winning.

We were down to No. 2 for a 45-14 home win against FSU. We dropped to No. 3 for a 45-10 win at Louisville. We were down to No. 4 for a 59-7 home takedown of Boston College. We held for a week at No. 4 to defeat Wofford (ranked No. 23 in the FCS) 59-14, but fell to No. 5 for a 55-10 road demolition of NC State. Luckily, the “real” (College Football Playoff) rankings started coming out, and the Tigers were No. 3 there, for a 52-3 smoking of Wake Forest in Death Valley.

The No. 3 Tigers took another easy victory in a nooner in Death Valley against South Carolina, dispatching the Capons 38-3. It was Clemson's 6th win in a row in the series, to lead 71-42-4. Clemson would go on to face the No. 23 Virgina Cavaliers of Coach Bronco Mendenhall in the ACC Championship game. The Swashbucklers were no match for the Tigers, as Clemson rolled convincingly, 62-17. The Tigers would enter the College Football Playoffs as the No. 3 seed, to play No. 2 Ohio State in the Fiesta Bowl Semifinal in Glendale, Arizona.

Ohio State had Justin Fields at quarterback, along with a host of other NFL talent. Fields and Trevor Lawrence had been linked throughout their careers, as both of them had been ranked the top dual threat QB coming into college, depending on which rating service you looked at. Lawrence had obtained immediate stardom by winning the National Championship as a true freshman at Clemson. Fields had a harder road, having flamed out at Georgia, and transferred to Ohio State, where the Buckeyes finally figured out how to utilize his special talents.

The Buckynuts took the opening kickoff and marched right down the field, all the way to a 1st and goal at the Clemson 5, before Brent Venables retooled and by now veteran defense forced them to settle for a 21 yard field goal to lead 3-0. Clemson took their opening possession and also got into field goal range, but BT Potter misfired from 49 yards out, score still 3-0 Buckeyes. After the miss, Ohio State took only one play to go the 68 yards the other way, on a JK Dobbins run, PAT good, to now lead 10-0.

The defenses forced a series of three punts following this, before Ohio State began to move the ball again. 7 plays and 75 yards got them to the Clemson 5 yard line again, and again Brent Venables defense forced them to settle for a field goal, to lead 13-0. After a Clemson 3 and out, the Buckeyes drove the field yet again, but again were forced to settle for 3, to lead 16-0. These failures to cash in drives with touchdowns would prove critical later in the game.

Being down 16-0 finally seemed to wake up the Clemson offense, and the Tigers mounted a 10 play, 70 yard drive ending in an 8 yard Travis Etienne touchdown run, PAT good, to trim the Buckeye lead to 16-7. The drive was aided by an official review that resulted in a targeting foul on OSU on what would have been a drive ending sack of Trevor Lawrence, AND by a PI committed against Justyn Ross. It was the correct call, both times.

After the Clemson defense forced a 3 and out of their own, the offense got going again, on a 5 play, 83 yard drive that ended with a Trevor Lawrence 67 yard gallop for the touchdown, PAT good, to now trail by two, at 16-14. The Tiger defense forced another 3 and out, and a one play kneeldown ended the first half.

After an exchange of punts to begin the 2nd half put Clemson in a hole, starting at our own 1 yard line, the offense mounted a pivotal drive. After surrendering one first down, the Buckeye defense had actually stopped the Tigers, but on the Clemson punt, they were flagged for roughing the kicker, resulting in new life for the Clemson offense. Two plays after the gift, Lawrence hit Travis Etienne on a little dumpoff pass which Travis turned into a sizzling 56 yard pass play for the TD. With the PAT, Clemson led for the first time, 21-16.

After this, Clemson forced a punt, then, on the next Clemson possession, came the most controversial call of the game. A Trevor Lawrence pass to Justyn Ross was completed, with a fumble, and an Ohio State scoop and score for a touchdown on the field. But, THAT play was overturned on replay, and was an absolutely HORRIBLE ruling. I'm with the announcers on this one, Ross had taken SEVERAL steps with the ball before he fumbled it. I just cannot find what replay looked at to overturn that.

OSU forced a punt on that possession after the overturned call, but were intercepted on their next possession by Isaiah Simmons. They forced yet another Clemson punt, taking over again on their own 16. Fields led his team on a beautiful 13 play, 84 yard TD drive that took the game into the 4th quarter, with a pass to Chris Olave covering the final 23 yards. PAT good, and the Buckeyes had reclaimed the lead, 23-21.

Now well into the 4th quarter, the Buckeye defense forced another punt, and the offense mounted a 10 play, 50 yard possession that took almost 7 minutes off the clock. But, finally, the Clemson defense got a stop on 3rd and 5 from the Tiger 40, forcing a punt which was downed on the Clemson 6 yard line with only 3:07 remaining.

We actually scored TOO quickly. The offense reeled off four straight first downs on first down plays, with the last two being a 38 yard Amari Rodgers catch and run, and a 34 yard Travis Etienne catch and TD run. We went for two, and a Lawrence to Tee Higgins pass was successful, for a 29-23 lead. But, we had left 1:49 on the clock for Justin Fields to work with.

And, work he did, as OSU marched down the field all the way to the Clemson 23, where they called timeout with 0:43 still left in the game. But, on the very next play, Fields's intended receiver fell down, and he threw the ball directly into the waiting arms of Clemson's Nolan Turner, to end the Buckeyes hopes. They would whine about the results of this game the entire offseason, and use it as fuel for next season. Clemson, meanwhile, would move on to face Joe Burrow and LSU in the National Championship Game in New Orleans.

The fact that Joe Burrow was even at LSU was at least ironic in this situation. He had spent two years of eligibility and burned a redshirt languishing on the bench at Ohio State before moving on to Baton Rouge for his junior season. He was installed as the starter at LSU, but nothing in his junior campaign foretold how he would take the college football world by storm as a senior.

By the time LSU got to the SEC Championship game, they had already defeated 4 Top 10 teams, including a 46-41 dethroning of Alabama as Kings of the SEC West. No. 4 Georgia became the fifth Top 10 victim by a score of 37-10, as the Tigers of Coach Ed Orgeron claimed the SEC title. CFP No. 4 seed Oklahoma in the Peach Bowl Semifinal was hardly even a tuneup, as LSU embarrassed the Sooners 63-28.

LSU made it a rare 3 games in a row at road venues with the same name, as the SEC Championship Game and the Peach Bowl were both played in the Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, and the CFP National Championship Game for this year was played at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome in New Orleans. Expensive advertising for the Benz, but advertising nonetheless!

The game started out punt, punt, punt, and punt, as the offenses were feeling out the defenses to find out what would work. But, on the 3rd Clemson possession, we got a 42 yard completion to Braden Galloway as part of a 5 play, 67 yard TD drive, Potter PAT good for a 7-0 Clemson lead. Two more punts would follow before a 4 play, 70 yard quick strike drive featuring a Burrow to Ja'Marr Chase 52 yard TD bomb would tie the game 7-7. You could already get the feel this was going to be an offensive shootout before it was over.

Clemson's next possession was salvaged for points when BT Potter nailed a 52 yard field goal to retake the lead at 10-7. Following an LSU punt, the offense clicked again, showing we could strike quickly as well. A 96 yard drive took only 4 plays, with the last being a Tee Higgins scamper for 36 yards and the score. With the Potter PAT, we increased the lead to 17-7. but, at that point, it was like the teams suddenly switched uniforms, as LSU came to life on both sides of the ball in a huge way.

LSU scored in 5 plays, 75 yards, featuring another 56 yard bomb to Ja'Marr Chase, with Burrow taking it the last 3 yards himself, PAT good, 17-14 Clemson. The Bayou Bengals forced a Clemson punt, and Burrow spread the ball around to three different receivers on the way to the end zone again, 6 plays, 87 yards, to give LSU their first lead of the night, 21-17. They forced another Clemson punt, and this time took 11 plays and all but 10 seconds of the time remaining in the 1st half to go 95 yards for another touchdown, to lead 28-17. A stunned Clemson team downed the ball and headed to the locker room to regroup.

Clemson forced an LSU punt coming out of the locker room, and mounted a 6 play, 50 yard TD drive featuring Travis Etienne runs on the last three plays, to cut the LSU lead to 28-25. But sadly, that is where the comeback attempt ended. The LSU defense dominated from this point forward in the game, forcing Clemson punts after 4, 4, 3, and 5 plays. This allowed the Clemson defense no time to really rest, and Burrow carved up a tiring Brent Venables bunch for two more touchdowns and a missed field goal, to put the game away, 42-25. Clemson's last offensive possession ended on a Trevor Lawrence fumble near midfield, after which LSU ran 8 plays to run out the clock and begin to celebrate a huge victory.

I personally believe this LSU team to be, if not the GREATEST of all time, certainly in the top three. There was no shame in being defeated by this assemblage of talent. But, that didn't make it feel any better to a battered Clemson team at the time. If I could do a “fantasy” matchup, it would be 2018 Clemson vs 2019 LSU for All Time bragging rights. Now THAT, would be a game for the ages. All 2019 results below.
