LB (and occasional Safety) Dorian O’Daniel was a great athlete who starred in some of Brent Venable’s great Clemson defense. But he did not always focus on football.

Before Clemson:

Dorian O’Daniel described his sports career before Clemson in ClemsonTigers.com:

“I played some basketball, but it wasn’t my best sport. I ran track in high school and played lacrosse until I eventually committed to football full time.”

Going into his senior season, ClemsonTigers.com listed his freshman-junior bio as follows:

“Junior who has been one of Clemson’s best special teams performers, and moved into a starting linebacker role in 2016 … has 116 tackles, including 15.5 for loss and 3.5 sacks, in 641 snaps in 40 career games (11 starts) … has 37 career tackles on special teams alone.”

After Clemson:

Despite being considered short for an NFL linebacker, the KC Chiefs selected O’Daniel with the 100th Pick (Third Round) of the 2018 NFL Draft. He played for the Chiefs for four season (2018-2021). According to Pro-Football-Reference.com, O’Daniel registered te following NFL statistics:

On October 5, 2023, O'Daniel signed with the Pittsburgh Maulers of the United States Football League (USFL). The Maulers folded when the XFL and USFL merged to create the United Football League (UFL)”

Clemson: Academic Excellence! Athletic Excellence!

North Carolina Highway 37 is a 60.0-mile-long state highway in the northeast corner of the state that runs from the south end at US 64 below Albemarle Sound to the north end at US 13 near Gates and the Virginia line, crossing the Sound and the Perquimans River, and going through Hertford and Gatesville. Seems North Carolina does nothing straight; everything's kind of crooked, but I digress.

Back to northeast North Carolina. Just above NC 37 near Gatesville is Merchants Millpond State Park (yay, a state park), a 3,520-acre park around a 200-year-old, 760-acre millpond and a cypress swamp. The park is managed by the North Carolina Division of Parks and Recreation. Farming and logging were the colonial pursuits in the area, but pre-World War II highway construction and development took over. But one developer donated some land with the millpond to the state and the park was established in 1973. Old growth cypress trees with hanging Spanish moss create an enchanted forest look, especially in Lassiter Swamp. Alligators also thrive in the swamp. Hiking the surrounding trails is a great way to explore these wetlands. Canoeing is also popular, but the alligators would make that an interesting endeavor.
