i think it was us kicking the living crap out of them, and they failed to convert yet another first down.....only thing funnier than the fight they started was that it was legendary HOLTZs' final game

Syvelle Newton was the first one to start it. He ran from their locker room straight to the bottom of the hill and started taunting. Others followed. It went "uphill" from there as we kicked their @$$ on and off the field.

after the incompletion and one of them shoved him in the back. He stumbled over a prone Syvelle and they jumped him. Their sideline erupted, then our sideline joined in...

Because it was 4th down, the teams were changing players as our offense was coming on the field and SC's defense. Since that was happening, it looked like from the Clemson bench, that SC was running on the field to fight...and vica versa. Got out of hand real quick.
Had it been a 2nd or 3rd down, probably a couple off setting penalties, and that is about it.

being there with my 7 year old son. The whole situation seemed out of control, especially sitting on The Hill. It was kind of nerve wracking.
To answer your question though. USuC set the tone early by attempting to meet our team running down the hill and knocking a cheerleader down. Some members of our team went to her defense and a fight almost erupted then. I think the fact that we were kicking their tail and the student section was bouncing around a huge inflatable wang at the end, was just too frustrating for them and they decided to continue the fight.
For the record, we won the game and the fight.

I'm not sure that this fight didn't start in high school when syvelle was at Marlboro County hs when they played Rock Hill hs. Anyone think that this fight was just a continuation from that? I always have. Syvelle was a thug. He's probably flipping burgers now - or probably on disability.

I remember seeing this on television and really wishing that it didn't happen. It cost us a bowl game that year and also sets a bad example for the types of people we want at our university. SC will take anyone that can play ball. Clemson has and always will hold people to a higher level of accountability.
I have a 3 year old son at home and this is one of the reasons why I won't be taking him to this game until he's older and can handle himself. Carolina fans are even worse.

A bunch of their players went to the bottom of the hill during pregame and tried messing with our boys while they were running down the hill, and somehow they got shoved into the student/hill section. I'm guessing some frat kids had a little fun with that.
Then we sacked their QB in the 4th. When the sack happened, their sideline ran onto the field and start trying to beat up on our defense, and our sideline rushed in.
I know players on each side were suspended. I don't know about any arrests though.
