High rise in Clemson

Feb 18, 2014, 10:49 AM

any more news about this stupid project?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Why is it stupid?***

Feb 18, 2014, 12:03 PM

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Beacase it is way, way, way

Feb 18, 2014, 12:09 PM

too big for downtown Clemson.

It will bring massive traffic and changes to downtown, possilbly ruining what makes Clemson special.

That's why it is stupid.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

^^^^ Could be the title

65 feet is a far cry from a high rise.

Down town does not need this period

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I would've said the same about the parking deck

Feb 18, 2014, 12:20 PM

In fact, I'd still say it, since traffic through downtown has gotten much, much worse since they added that thing. Doesn't do much for the aesthetics of Clemson, either.

I bet the businesses downtown love the parking deck***

If anything, I'd prefer that they reduce the size of the footprint and triple or quadruple the height.

This guy would probably think it is too short.

OK, watching this video has exposed a fear that I have , but didn't know that I had.

I am not sure that I can even go upstairs anymore.

Watch the whole thing if you dare.

There is another which makes my palms sweat. I think its "antenna tower climb" or something. Dude climbs a 10,000 foot tower to change a beacon. No sir, not for this guy.

Re: High rise in Clemson

Feb 18, 2014, 1:34 PM [ in reply to Re: High rise in Clemson ]

Why do you use the term Yankee as if it's a racial slur? Why are you so angry about people having a different opinion?

Why am I here? Here where? On a Clemson website? Because I went to Clemson...that should be obvious.

I said in the other thread that Northern cities mop the floor with their Southern peers when it comes to urban development, which they do. That's not debatable.

This isn't the big city life man, this is smart development. How many people are supposed to live in this building? 300? That's 300 more people living downtown, without the need to use a car to get to class, bars, football games, etc. Do you think it's to chop down 10 acres of forest to build a development like Crawford Falls 3 miles from campus, where everyone needs to drive their car to/from campus, bars, etc.?

In my opinion, the more people we can get living downtown, the better. I think it'd be better for Clemson to reduce student dependency on cars...it'll make for a livlier, more interesting, more diverse downtown area. As more student go downtown, businesses will follow. This will create jobs and opporunity for local businesses. This has nothing to do with increasing the size of the school, mind you. This is about relocation. I think the closer to campus students live, the better life will be both on campus and downtown.

We "Yankees" are good at plenty of things...don't be scared of what you don't understand.

Re: High rise in Clemson

Feb 19, 2014, 8:54 AM [ in reply to Re: High rise in Clemson ]

Oh I understand that all you guys want to do is build, build and build. If you are so great at development then why are all of y'all moving here?
You want the south to be like the north and that is NOT what we want.
If it was so great up there why did you come to school here?
Like I said if you are to lazy to walk or drive to the store then go back north and walk.
You ask where is there a grocery store with in a half mile from down town? Bilo find it LOVE it.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: High rise in Clemson

Feb 19, 2014, 9:33 AM

Pretty sure there's been nothing but "build, build, build" going on in the South lately. The Clemson area has seen numerous, massive housing developments built within the last ten years, most of those geared towards students or condos for tailgaters. The question here appears to be more of what kind of building people want, not whether there should be building.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: High rise in Clemson

Feb 19, 2014, 10:23 AM

Exactly. People don't seem to realize that there has actually been a massive amount of development in the area...it's just been done in a poor manner.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: High rise in Clemson

Feb 19, 2014, 10:30 AM [ in reply to Re: High rise in Clemson ]

Moving where? I don't live in South Carolina...there are Northerners moving South, sure, but often for retirement or job opportunities.

I don't want the South to be like the North...but that doesn't mean it can't develop in a better manner. What you seem to miss is that down South--and even in Clemson--it has been "build, build, and build". There have been massive projects built over the past decade, but they're not close to campus.

Your comment of "if you're too lazy to walk or drive to the store, then go back North and walk" is laughable. Bi-Lo is about 2.5 miles from downtown. That's not exactly walking distance (roughly 45 minutes walking), especially with a bunch of bags or in the heat. You say to drive, but then that would build up the congestion you're so petrified of. Putting more students downtown and a small grocery store (with minimal to no parking) would be a great thing.

That's my whole point enough is enough.

Come to upper greenville county and i'll show you house after house for sale.

Oh I'll buy you a beer to yankee boy LOL

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: High rise in Clemson

Feb 19, 2014, 8:54 PM

I believe you that there are plenty of homes for sale in the area...however I like the idea of college towns having tight, old school developments. I don't like everyone living far away from campus in these cheaply built faux-luxury communities...I'd much prefer students to live in and around downtown, among their fellow students. Rub shoulders with one another. Be a community. I think that sort of thing would bring the Clemson "family" feel to another level.

Does that mean the structure of downtown would have to change? Yes. But I think it'd be for the better.

I also think its funny that the political bent on tigernet is typically "get the government out of my [whatever]," but when it comes to development and zoning, all bets are off.

I think if you check the ones that LIVE here we want local gov. to set up and not give into big money

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: High rise in Clemson

Feb 20, 2014, 3:21 AM [ in reply to Re: High rise in Clemson ]

Local govt is not the issue. We need to put the bulk of the govt power at the local level instead of at the Federal level. That is the argument.

And good building and city planning (codes, zoning, etc) should be demanded by all. It helps everyone's quality of life and property values and attractiveness to outsiders who will be attracted to spend their $ here.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: High rise in Clemson

Feb 20, 2014, 10:40 AM

I'm certainly not against zoning, I'm just pointing out the hypocrisy. There's an additional level of hypocricy involved in that letting commercial land owners build what they want on their land is basically the free market at work. If they fail, they fail, so what. Obviously there are certain problems with that in that we all bear some of the consequences of someone's failure (lower property values, blight, parking problems, etc.). The issue is just how much control should there be and what do we want the goals of that control to be.

Do we want the government to actively encourage people to live in a spread out fashion? That's what our local, state, and federal government have been doing for decades. Our roads receive massive subsidies and people are encouraged to buy housing instead of rent it via the home mortgage interest deduction. Zoning in a lot of towns prevents building afordable housing by forcing houses to be on lots of certain sizes with certain set backs, etc.

Apparently a lot of vocal tnetters find this equals progress. This thing goes up and we start the momentum to looking like USuC - congrats!
I signed the petition and wrote City Council. Would attend every possible meeting if I did not work FT and live 3 hours away. This thing makes me as mad as losing to USuC - that's saying a lot.

Clemson will never look like Columbia...and if this gets built, it's not a sign that it's going in that direction.

I think it is fair to say that applies to every town in america.

badge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Y'all confuse me..

Feb 20, 2014, 12:18 AM

I've been at Clemson for 4 years now and I think this would be awesome for downtown! Have y'all not seen the campus lately!? Since my first year here they've built several new buildings on campus. And even more coming. This "high-rise" is nothing compared to the new additions on campus and how different it is going to look. Our downtown needs something new. All I hear from everyone now is how tired they are of going downtown because it's the same old thing every weekend.
