Some things never change. We are scary, but ugay is overrated many years. Kinda like coots, really. It's early, though, so we'll see, but it surely is nice to see that ugay is overrated in print.

a short time ago by LSU. I'm not sure one win against Wake convinces me we are suddenly head-and-shoulders above Alabama.

It is interesting to see that with the national media, our brand is now at a point where they just shrug off and forget a game like the LSU game. That is how they used to treat Bama and it would drive us nuts. There has been virtually no mention of the way Trevor played that night. Like it didn't happen.

We now get the Bama "reset". I guess Clemson has earned it.

I do think we've earned a ton of respect. I think also it's that we still showed last season that we were a level above every team other than LSU, and they lost a ton of talent off of that team from last year. We lost some key guys as well, but still also returned a ton of key guys including our QB. Then add in that Ohio State isn't part of the equation, and we're the clear favorites. I'm sure that Alabama or some other contender will come along during the season and receive a ton of hype along with us, but as it currently stands, we're the obvious choice.

Here’s the difference...The average impactful Alabama player is usually in his 5th year in the program whereas the average impactful player for Clemson are juniors. Bama is good because MFers don’t leave until their 5th year...and don’t hand me that “backlog of talent” BS...The guys before them don’t leave until their 5th year.

I’m sorry but you’re just completely wrong about that. Alabama probably has more talent than anybody, including Clemson and Ohio State. Although Alabama and Ohio State are the only two programs consistently with more draft picks over the last 5 to 7 years then Clemson. And Alabama loses a ton of guys after only two or three years. You don’t see a lot of fourth or fifth year seniors at Alabama. The model you’re talking about is how a duke or a Wake Forest or other programs put together a pretty good team every four or five years with all the stars aligned just right along with them having a lot of senior talent with experience. Alabama always has a ton of freshmen come in and start. Alabama has had the number one or number two recruiting class every year for like the last 10 years. They are always in the top three. Clemson just had its first top-five recruiting class last year. Over the last 10 years our recruiting classes I’ve averaged around 9th or 10th in the country. Alabama hasn’t had a recruiting class outside the top five since Saban got there.

Don't get me wrong, I agree that Clemson should be the favorite and is the most likely single team to win it all (if the virus does not stop everything). And I certainly hope we do win it all!

I was just taking a pause at the comment "the gap is ENORMOUS" between us and EVERY other team. There are a few out there that could be very, very capable by January.

I know LSU was great last year, but we didn't exactly dominate Ohio State either.

LSU had a great team last year no doubt, but Clemson has a great program. I think that’s what those guys were talking about. LSU is not gonna be very good this year, but we’re back at number one.

I recently re-watched the LSU game and the truth of the matter is we should and could have had a 7 to 10 point lead at the end of the third-quarter. We made a lot of unforced errors in that game and a lot of mental mistakes and let’s be honest Trevor Lawrence had his worst game. He had Ross wide open at the 10 yard line in the first half that would’ve been an easy touchdown and he wasn’t under much pressure and made a terrible throw. That’s just one example of many bad plays the entire team made that were unforced errors.

LSU last year was sort of like the Florida Marlins in baseball. Look at how many players they had drafted by the NFL. Almost all of those players were transfers. That was a team full of mercenaries. That is not how you build a consistent and stable program.

Another thing about LSU last year was they had that quarterback guru running a system that is very similar to what Kurt Warner ran during the years of the greatest show on turf! Charlie Whitehurst talked about that in depth in an interview with Larry Williams on his podcast. Anyone not listening to Larry Williams podcast is really missing out! It is fantastic.

And you noticed that guy went back to the NFL after only one year at LSU. He knew they were not going to be very good this year and his stock would never be higher. That guy had a unique system that no one has ever seen in the college game with a tremendously talented team and a fifth year senior quarterback that was a good fit for the system. It’s similar to what Spurrier Did at Florida his first few years. That was a new offense that people did not know how to defend. But that offense would not work this year at LSU because you don’t have the talent and they’re going to have a young inexperienced quarterback. So what you had at LSU last year was kind of a perfect storm. You had a fifth year senior quarterback in a unique pro offense with a team that was highly talented with a bunch a transfer mercenaries. It made for a great team, but LSU is going to suck this year and they’re not building a stable consistent program. And if you also noticed Spurrier didn’t run that offense at other schools later. Because given a few years defensive coordinators will adjust and figure any system out.

I think Alabama and Ohio State have pretty much equal talent to Clemson, but Clemson has a better coaching staff and a better culture. Alabama doesn’t have a great quarterback with experience this year. That’s why Clemson and Ohio State this year would’ve been considered the two best teams if Ohio State were playing. Over the last 5 to 10 years only Alabama and Ohio State have had more draft picks. Maybe LSU, because they always have a lot of talent, but they don’t have the coaching staff nor the culture so they tend to under perform on the field.

Oh I forgot one other key point. Not only did we just not play well in that game and again Trevor did not play well either, but what really hurt us was we had a patchwork offensive line. Yes our starters were good, but we had no depth. And wow those starters were good it was it a bunch a first round draft picks like we had had for several years. That’s why we got manhandled in the fourth quarter. Our defense was totally gassed and there was no depth on the line.

Had we played better the first three quarters and had a seven or 10 point lead, which I think we could have had, then we could’ve pounded the ball with ETN and milk the clock keeping that LSU offense and more importantly our exhausted defense off the field! And maybe hung on for the win.

But we were behind at the end of the third-quarter and our defense was just absolutely exhausted which was a bad combination and unfortunately we got manhandled in the fourth quarter. But that game was actually a lot closer than people think and it really did come down to a lot of poor play on our part and for the first time in a lot of years a mediocre DL by Clemson standards.

I usually wear orange colored glasses but the comments by those two are head and shoulders above anything I would have said about our Tigers. The biggest "take away" I get re their comments is that Dabo and staff have recognized true talent and have developed that talent and molded it into a team effort. Overall, we don't yet have the star power of Ohio State and Alabama but have coached up those three and four star recruits to the point where we have leveled out the playing field.

I liked the remark by one of the analysts that Georgia is overrated. Many of us on this board have said Smart has done less with more talent than any other team.

My only real concern coming into this year was the OL. I’m still not convinced it’s a really good OL. That was the biggest weakness under TB And why he had so much inconsistency and that has been the one weakness that we have had under Dabo. Our OL play has been better under Dabo but until the last year or two we were not recruiting top talent at that position and we were not developing the type of lines we had under Danny Ford. I have felt for years the only thing holding us back is a Danny Ford type OL. Now that we are recruiting that position at a high-level if we can develop that talent and start having some dominant play at the OL position we will become unstoppable!

I think Dabo and the team deserve every compliment they get for the way they have handled things this year and for the last several BUT it is only one game and I saw and I'm sure the coaches did too a lot of things that need work. Need to just be Clemson and see some more teams play before we crown ourselves!

I think the biggest takeaway from this past weekend is more so the fact that we did look quite polished compared to most of the other teams that played yesterday. Only going to get better!

Sure some things need a little work, but compared to

the sloppiness that I've seen everywhere else over these first 2 weeks of CFB, we looked like we had been playing football for half a season.

And it shouldn't be a HUGE surprise that when our best CB and his backup are both out for the 1st game of the season, that we might have some issues in coverage. If we still have issues covering WRs on the outside in another month or so I'll be more concerned.

And not surprisingly, the secondary did get better as the game went on. In the firt quarter they got burned on a few passes. By the secong half they were breaking up passes. The guys in garbage time took two silly penalties, but overall, not bad. Good to see the backups getting reps. Hopefully, DK and Mario will be back soon. Then the defense will relly be good.

Rattler and OU had a blowout Saturday, and the media isn't rushing to talk about them over us. A couple years ago, ANY team would have gotten at least equal press as Clemson. Now, we've earned some respect. But we will see how long that last if Bama routs a team the same week we struggle.

“You don’t see them play to the level of the competition.” That has been HUGE under Dabo’s leadership. Used to drive me bonkers under Bowden and West. Also think it’s too early to write of teams like Alabama.

The main reason they said we are head and shoulders above everyone is because no one else has a top-notch QB (yet). Ohio State is the only team maybe in our class but they aren't playing.

Alabama and UF are the two teams that have the best chance to establish themselves as 2nd best. Depends on QB play.

Also just to remind everyone: Luginbill of ESPN is the reason DJ was rated so low by 247's composite. They had him in the 50s

Luginbill Is the son of a football coach and played as a starting quarterback at GT and is a huge fan of Dabo and Clemson! He gives us more positive press than anyone. If he did downplayed D.J. It was not because of any anti-Clemson bias but probably more the fact of an East Coast bias.
