course that you have personally played had the fastest greens you ever putted on? Having not ever gotten the opportunity to play Augusta National, and residing on the east coast, mine would be a private course in Clinton, SC named Musgrove Mills. They had a SCANA tournament there one year, and my company sent a team of four. It was a four man Captain's choice tournament.
The greens were so fast for that tournament, you could breathe on the ball and it would move. One example: One one of the par fives, we were on the fringe in two, about 40 feet from the hole. I mean, we were literally only about an inch off the green, all putting. For our next shot after that, we had to select my putt, which had finished TWENTY FIVE FEET FROM THE HOLE. And, I was a dayum good putter back then. I think I may have been the only one of our group who even kept it on the green on that shot.
Another one, although not in the league of Musgrove Mill fast, was the Deer Track course in Myrtle Beach that has bentgrass greens. It was so hot that day, they were coming out and "syringing" the greens with water about every hour, to keep them from burning up. Even with the water on them, they were VERY quick.

That course will always have a warm spot in Tiger hearts. Because, the first number that springs to mind when I hear "Oakmont" is 63. That was Johnny Miller's final round score when he won the US Open there in 1973. It is also the first half of our favorite score against the Coots of course.

We have put worse whippings on them, but that one just seems to stand out, and stand the test of time.

I've played some courses with very fast greens, but that is to be expected. I doubt I'll ever play on a course with greens anywhere close to Augusta National.

I played at Augusta once. For member play, the greens aren’t as fast as they are during the tournament. For day to day play, Musgrove Mill had faster greens.

While I've never played out west or much up north, if Musgrove is one of the 3 springs mills courses, I've played it. My old boss took me up there a couple times and it was great... If we're talking the same course.
Mine would be River Hills in a club tourney. It too had bent. It was fun to experience though. It was running about 11. I couldn't fathom an Oakmont at 13 or 14. Bucket list item though.
If you ever get to play Lancaster, it's a good course too. Nothing fancy but a good layout and challenge.

You're right.
I was confused with the Fort mill and Springfield courses. Courses you guys probably wouldn't pay a nickel to play. Only courses these meager former state employees can play.
We also used to love playing Cheraw State Park course too. None are rated top 10 or top 100 but they were good to us.

Fort Mill, Springfield, Tega Cay are my usual spots. Edgewater in Lancaster on occasion as well. If you want a challenge play Springfield from the tips. It’s all you want. I choose to play one or two in front of those. Rated one of the toughest tracks around the Charlotte area from the tips. These courses can make them as fast as they want right now with the Bermuda but people would complain. Bent grass is fading out around here with the heat. Heard Musgrove was very nice but have never played there.

I got suckered into playing Gordon Lakes, which is the golf course on Fort Gordon. The wind was blowing about 25 mph, and I posted a cool 91, thank you very much. Any course can humble you if conditions are right and you get cocky. The golf gods don't like cocky at all. They would never be Coot fans.

We've played Edgewater a few times. Robert Bradley plays the tracs you mention often. Really good golfer. Still shoots his age at 71.

Musgrove was built by a group that was put together and was supposed to be sort of a private retreat for executives in mostly South Carolina. It was going to be a Fazio course, but they just could not raise enough money using the Fazio name. They then hired Arnold Palmer, as his name could probably get more investors. The financial advisor, who I guess helped put the group together, also really wanted to help design the course and he told Palmer he wanted a "Pine Valley" type of course, which of course was silly, as the sandy soils and conditions in the pine barrens of New Jersey are much different than the red clay in SC. Long story short ...... they tried ..... Palmer never got completely paid ..... and it has struggled ever since. Hope all is well there now!

Musgrove's greens are very fast. Will Holroyd, the supt., has always kept them lightning fast. However, Oakmont had the fastest greens that I have ever played on ...... to the point you left half of your putts 6' short because you were so conscious of putting 10' by. Pine Valley's greens were almost as fast, but the slope on the greens at each course just compounds the difficulty.
The slowest greens I have ever played were at Chamber's Bay, site of the 2015 US Open. I played it in 2013 and the greens could not have been rolling over a 6. The ball would literally stop on a downhill transition slope between levels on the green. I was playing with Bob Cupp, a well known golf architect (an excellent player) and after a few holes he was putting with his 3-wood for putts over 20'.

better on a real golf course after playing a couple rounds on a putt putt.
Butt, you actually have to figure angles and stuff on a putt putt course. Bryson DeChambeau would melt his hat trying to figure all that stuff out.

I've played a lot of courses here in the NYC metro area and out on Long Island with some seriously slick greens, but the fastest is a place in CT called The Stanwich Club. Immaculate conditions, and when I played a few weeks ago they were stimping around 14 and even the members (for which this is usually a point of pride) were almost complaining.
The fastest GIVEN THE SLOPE OF THE GREENS have to be Sebonack, way out on Long Island by National and Shinny. The greens are incredibly fun, but also incredibly severe...they would be a lot more fun if they slowed them down. I think I putted off of 2 greens.

Pool tables that were potato chips. 3 footers with slight down hill 1/2 cup breaks could end up 8 feet past cup if missed. Treacherous as hell. I have to say, on a local level, Ft. Jackson's Old Hickory course always has blazing fast nasty greens too.

Those things can get stupid fast when they want them to.
Bengaline ain’t wrong about Oakmont. They actually slow them down from the normal members speed for the US open.

Baltusrol Upper course in N.J. built into a mountain..best advice i got: if the mountain's behind you, putt it halfway there, if the mountain is in front of you, putt it twice as hard.

I forgot about Seminole. For Bermuda greens they are crazy fast with a lot of slope. I putted off #10 from 6'above the cup for a birdie ....... after the green had just been topdressed.

Played a few Championship courses in my day....Oakmont greens are fastest hands down...no question.
Yes,Musgrove is fast but like fly paper in comparison.??

Pinehurst #2 and it isn't close. Not only are they fast but it's like putting on a turtle shell. Our caddie taught us on the first green to putt every putt with the toe of the club, even then I sent plenty well past the hole. That said, on my home course (Devil's Ridge) we have some really slick greens from time to time. And I swear every time they get that super quick and I finally get adjusted to them, they either punch or top dress them and they slow down considerably. Now I know it's for the better in the long run but I swear our superintendent has it out for me lol

Forgot about Pinehurst #2 ..... they can really get nasty when combined with the slopes.
I've played Devil's Ridge and think it is a terrific course .... but I am a little prejudiced about some of the courses in the Raleigh area ...... some good courses there.

up to play Pinehurst #2 while I was young enough to still have a decent golf game, and still had golfing buddies to routinely play with. The game has pretty much gone now, and so have most of the golfing buddies. I have to believe there are golf courses in heaven, and they are patiently waiting on the first tee for me.

I used to think years ago that one day I would be able to. But, alas, the back surgeries came and the game went. I will have to live to about 102 myself now if I ever want to do it.
