Hey Engineers! I had a 3/4 inch PVC pipe break off clean.

Aug 13, 2021, 9:41 PM

The water pressure is 60psi. How much water did I lose in the five-hour span it took to repair it?

You should really be using 3” OD PVC, nerd.

I have a One and a half inch main running to my house, with 3/4 inch pipe servicing my house, and that helps to keep plenty of water pressure even with both showers, and all sinks on at the same time in my house!!! Plus I have a shut off valve at every separate connection, it's better to be safe than sorry, and it don't cost that much more for the added shut off valves!!!

Was far more complicated that turning off the "shutoff valve".

I had a $500 water bill one month, no way I used that but the county made me pay it after months of protests.

I didn’t even have a leak...lol

the water main to work on it. And how would you fix it anyway while the water is running at 60 psi. That's not exactly a drip.

I made the mistake of thinking that if I knew how to repair the leak, that some of you might trust I had a reason for NOT turning off the main valve.

The line serves two households. One involves some very sick people. It also serves an RV Park with 20 RV's. This particular line was installed many years ago (not by me) and had no cut-off other than the meter. I was losing water, but I kept it on so those people still had service.

It took three hours of digging just to find exactly where the line was broken. The water was coming out of the ground 20 feet away from the actual leak. The digging was slow because it was by hand, in a parking lot area that is basically a foot of crusher-run, and it was very hot! The line was 30" deep...flat land...no way to get rid of the muddy water.

Once the leak was located, I tried to stop it with a compression sleeve plugged on one end. It blew off three times. I finally glued it underwater with Wet/Dry Cement. So far, that has held.

I just asked the question out of curiosity. I'm not going to cry to the water company or set up a GoFundMe account.

Talk to the water company and explain what happened. They should have a policy to adjust your bill (some) to compensate for the water usage due to the leak after repairs are made. It's worth a shot.

Why did it take so long to repair it? Plus, you should have individual shut off valves for every house that the main line goes to. That way, only the house with the break will have to be shut down for repairs!!!

I have a shut off valve for every toilet, and sink in my house, plus a main line shut off valve!!!

I'm with you allinall. But, the original plumbing is not my work. I just built myself a bathroom and it has four shutoff valves.

I have no idea how much you lost but

Aug 14, 2021, 11:56 AM

you should’ve been able to cut the main supply from the water company with a curb key. Just my .02 as someone who just replaced all of my housing plumbing from the road to the tank 2 years ago go with PEX and not PVC on your supply lines. PVC is OK on drain lines but put PEX on the supply. I’ve heard of some people being wary of PEX because it’s a newer thing but I’ve never heard of anyone actually having issues with it. Again that’s just my .02 on what type of pipe you should use. Also install a ball valve cut off on your main line coming in beyond the water company’s valve so that you don’t have to turn off at the meter if another break happens or if you decide to add to or repair existing plumbing. I will also reiterate what AOATT said about putting in as many shut offs as possible so you can isolate the problem for repair while keeping other things supplied. It especially a good idea in your situation when you’re supplying multiple residences like that.

Re: Hey Engineers! I had a 3/4 inch PVC pipe break off clean.

Aug 14, 2021, 12:25 AM

Depending on where it broke, you also had some form friction losses from turns and bends in the pipes that probably lowered your overall flowrate as well.

Also, depending on how big an event this turns out being, most water companies offer a one time forgiveness in “act of god” or water line failures. Again, they emphasize one-time so you have to think about it in context.

well a 3/4 inch pipe will have between a .75-.85 inch inside diameter - at rough 20-25 gpm -

roughly 7,000 over 6 hours. Hope you plan of digging up the rest of the line and replacing it.

Flex Seal is supposed to handle stuff like that in seconds, just close it off. You should’ve looked into that with your five hours.

Aug 14, 2021, 8:47 AM

5 hr x 60 min/hr x 110 gal/min = 33,000 gallons of water.

If you've got PVC pipes throughout your house and your house is beginning to age, you should hope and pray your pipes don't become brittle and spontaneously burst, and also make sure you always keep your insurance paid up. You can talk to a plumber if you like, but he'll tell you that hope and prayer are the best approach. Once the pipes burst and the water destroys everything, then your insurance will pay to replace the pipes and for all the water damage.

You are way off on everything you said. Where did you come up with a 3/4" pipe carrying 110 gal. per minute. Do you really think you could fill two 55 gsllon barrels in one minute with a hose pipe (or 3'4" pipe. I doubt it.

Also if you pipe breaks and floods your house, your insurance will NOT pay to replace or repair the pipe. It will pay for the damage that the water caused.

Worst case scenario with the information provided; guillotine line break dumping directly to atmospheric pressure, with line break close to a larger sized header to minimize pressure drop from the source to the line break and with an infinite supply of water.

LOL .... that's true Aiden! But a 3/4" pipe can only carry so much water, so I think you were a good bit high ...... more like 25 gallons per minute.
