Here's why I'm not worried about Hyatt's weight:

Aug 4, 2015, 1:32 AM

1) outside of 3-4 teams, most DE's weigh between 250-275, so he actually outweighs them.
2) Hyatt is a master technician, who understands leverage and angles.
3) He's only a daggum freshman! He's got 3 more years to top the 300 lb mark. He's actually gained 15lbs since arriving in January.
I watched D'Brickashaw Ferguson school guys at Uva at 260 lbs. Hyatt, Crowder and Fruhmorgan are all linemen I always hoped we'd get. Barring injury, we're in good hands upfront for a long time to come.

yet to play a game and you already calling him a technician?***

If she's a hollerer, she'll be a screamer.
If she's a screamer, she'll get you arrested.

Battle played at that weight pretty much his whole time here. Just sayin'.

Can sugarcoat it all you want, 285 is light in the pants.

Average weight of starting OT's from this year's BCS playoff teams was 312lbs. No, weight isn't the sole factor in determining quality of the player and Hyatt has above average feet that will help him, but fact is he's still light in the pants and at some point will have trouble moving guys especially in the run game.

And our D would have demolished those AVG. OT's in the CFP last year. We don't need a 312 lb. OT to win for us. Just hold on for 2-3 seconds and Williams, Peake, Scott, Hopper, Cain and McCloud are in the house.

Same weight Isaiah Battle was last 3 years.***

Yes, and what is the knock against Battle?

Besides off the field concerns, main issue was he has a weak anchor and can't move guys.

Not saying Hyatt isn't going to be great, or won't be adequate, but there is a reason you don't see 285lb freshman playing for top tier teams.

We need him to play well in college. Not the NFL yet.***

Also shows that Battle was not a workhorse in the weight room. Hyatt gained 15 lbs in one summer.

Remember Jack Mewhort from Ohio State? He was a big guy, prototypical size at 6'5", 315 lbs and considered a great NFL prospect. Beasley took him to school - ran around, inside, and right over him because he didn't have perfect technique. Hyatt has better technique than many guys going to the NFL, which is why he handled several of the nation's top DEs in high school with little trouble.

Re: Here's why I'm not worried about Hyatt's weight:

Aug 4, 2015, 12:17 PM

Yeah, and what position does Mewhort play now? He's a guard, because he didn't have OT feet able to keep up with a top tier rusher.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

He's 285 lbs. Why would you worry?***

That last phrase is the point. Barring injury.

Aug 4, 2015, 1:35 PM

i don't worry as much about experience. He will get that as the games roll on but I just hope he doesn't get hurt. That weight and strength are key components to staying healthy. Hopefully he can get by this yr with little to no wear and tear
