Here's what I think happened in OU BV deal

Dec 5, 2021, 7:27 PM

No inside info, just based on how this went down today.

I think Venables was third choice. Had he been first choice, this deal would have already happened. There would have been no need to wait until today. Venables was probably interviewed days ago and said he was interested in taking the job as HC if the details could be worked out. OU said they were interviewing other candidates and would make a decision by such and such a date and would let him know.

Their first choice was Cincy HC who they had also interviewed. He prolly told them he would take the job after the CFB playoffs were over but not until then. OU told him they could not wait to hire a coach until playoffs were over but would wait until playoff teams were announced. If Cincy was in the playoffs, they would move on to another person. Cincy coach said, fine.

Same thing happened with Lanning at UGA. He was not about to give up a chance to win a Natty as DC. So, when the teams were announced this a.m. OU knew they had to call Venables and offer him the job. So, shortly after teams were announced, They called him and offered him the job. They told him they needed to have everything in place by Monday and they would fly into Clemson by 4 p.m. and work on the contract. He said , see you at 4. Have a safe flight.

Just my take on the way it happened. It takes time to get the many, many fine details hammered out.

You are silly. Brent has Been their first choice all along.

Actually, not from what I'm reading. He was at best 2nd choice. Good write up by original poster.

OU is in panic mode. Hence the full court press of BV.

Its silly you say they are in panic mode. They have a boat load of money to throw around and if the "panic hire" is Venables thats a pretty #### good panic hire.

If he was their first choice the deal would have already been done. They were definitely waiting for yesterday’s games to be played so they could talk to someone else.

If BV was OU’s “first choice all along” what is it they’ve been doing for the past week? Why the urgency now all of a sudden, Sunday after conf title games are played to move on their first choice?

I think OP is onto something re: timing of how things are playing out.

I don't think OU was ever interested in Fickel, and I don't

think he would ever go. He is an Ohio guy, and has been in Ohio his entire career, both as a player and coach. He's in a school that is going to the Big 12 next year. I think the only 2 jobs he would consider leaving Cincy for is OSU and ND, and that might be a stretch.

Not sure what is happening now, or if they have just started the process... but I think BV has been their choice all along. We are just waiting to see if he will decide to go.

Pretty good analysis if your off it won’t be by much, if he was there first choice it would’ve been done

Going on this analysis (I don't disagree), it seems to me if Clemson was in the normal role of National Championship contender, then BV would also be off of the table until the playoffs were over. So line up all of the usual suspects for why we are 9-3 vs 12-0 and you have found the culprit for why we are in the position of possibly losing the best DC in college football. Cinco, TE, Dabo, portal, NIL, the list go on and on.,
